  1. Happy Birthday POP!!! I know this will be a special birthday for you, I know you are a proud father to a very ambitious son, who is following in the foot steps of you, Jason has done a wonderful job of bringing back a very special part of the family called Great Lake Lure Company. It must be a awsome feeling to see those machines producing lures again, and also to see your son taking the business to a higher level!! You are very blessed to be able to see him working very hard as any business owner does, as a owner in a business everything and everybody comes first, but I can tell he is very happy and proud to be in his shoes !!, I wish you many more happy and healthy years to come, may God bless the both of you on this special day. Happy Birthday. Pop your friend PAP.
  2. The zinc compound abbreviated ZDDP, is an extreme pressure additive that helps keep flat tappet camshafts from wearing out. In 2007 all gasoline oils went from the old SL spec to the new "emissions" SM formula. Anyway this was done because it was found that the anti- wear additives caused problems with the catalytic converters. Diesel oil has had more anti-wear compounds than gas oils. The old pre-emissions oils had a CI-4 rating. The new stuff has a CJ-4 rating. The CI-4 is the stuff to use in flat tappet engines, these oils have the zinc already added. As far as additives, EOS and ever other "street" oil supplement containing large amounts of zinc and phosphorus compound have been DISCONTINUED. If you want these additives, you've got to turn to the race shops. Comp Cams sells a very popular additive its part number 159. Crane Cams also offers their additive. Shell Rotella 30w-40w still is CI-4 about a month ago I saw Shell Rotella CI-4 15w-40 in 2.5 gallon jugs at Tractor supply. If you have a flat tappet engine, use diesel oil and try to use the CI-4 stuff as this has the zinc added right in. There are folks who are extremely set in their beliefs about what they've been told or read, regarding high zinc oils providing excellent wear protection. But the truth is, like all things in life, motor oils are NOT all created equal, some are simply better than others, no matter what their zinc levels are. Anyone would have to be delusional to think otherwise. Here is a list where the oil was tested in psi before it broke down and a list off the additives I will give the Shell Rotella and the Brads Penn Racing oils Shell Rotella = 72,022 psi Zinc =1454 ppm Phos = 1234 ppm ZDDP = 1200 ppm Brad Penn (semi- synthetic) 10w30 = 71,206 Zinc = 1557 ppm Phos = 1651 ZDDP = 1500 Keep in mind for comparison with the oils above that the oil industry has found that above 1,400 ppm,ZDDP INCREASED long term wear, and it was also found that ZDDP above 2,000 ppm, started attacking the grain boundaries in the iron, resulting in camshaft spalling. So no matter what zinc fans might "believe", there is such a thing as "to much of a good thing"!!!! I hope this helps you? The shell Rotella is so close it hurts and it's like $14.99 a gallon at our local store. Pap
  3. 100% correct, it would have to get down in the low 20's to freeze solid and crack stuff
  4. If your a hard rock dude how about Knows kandy Lateral line Ate Ball Quick fix Bass bong Pike pipe Koi lude Grass pike
  5. Yes Shell Rotella makes a strait 40 weight, it's T1SAE40 tractor supply has it. She'll Rotella caters to the industrial field, a lot of the older farm tractors used this oil and heavy equipment.
  6. What year is the power plant, and what type of cam & lifters is it a flat tappet or roller, I switched my heads from flat tapped to the new roller design, the newer design required faster oil lubrication to the top of the motor so I run Shell Rotella multi viscosity 5w-40 but my older motor before I rebuilt it I ran straight 40. It made a world of difference while trolling with the main, my oil pressure used to drop down to scary #'s then I went to strait 40 in the Shell Rotella and that kept my pressure at 25 at trolling speed which was like 650-800 rpm. I decided to add a kicker to reduce the wear and tear on the main. The reason I use the Shell Rotella is my father-in-law has tri axel trucks and they have Volvo Engines in them, the one truck had a issue that the pan needed to be dropped at that time they pulled a rod cap to inspect the bearings and they were like new the mechanic said they can't put better ones in and that truck had 650,000 miles on it, I believe that these marine engines really take a beating even if you take care of it, they have to work hard and the environment they are in doesn't doesn't help matters either.
  7. Pretty cool, I never saw something like that before. Thanks for sharing.
  8. Barry I would jump on Jason's offer, just think of all the new hardware you would get first dibs at, not to mention getting paid to do something you like to do. LOL.good looking spoon man, I really like the green frog color ones
  9. EXCELLENT, maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel!! Thanks for sharing.
  10. Your welcome mightyhunter, it took me about 2 hours to make mine with most of the time on the first one, second one went quick. Same to you with best of luck fishing and safe boating!!
  11. I'm trying the Sufix leadcore this year, with the Tuffline did you find it difficult to get the lead out, the Sufix was terrible, not like the older type where you could slide the outer cover right down like 6" at a clip, with the Sufix I could only push the sheathing down about an 1 1/2" then break the lead off and do it again, as soon as I went to pull the lead out it broke off. As far as knotting the core to backer I tried all different knots like the ones mentioned with no luck, so I tried the improved cinch on two pieces of mono and it worked, I thought I was doing something wrong, so out of frustration I used number 8 Spro swivels to join the backer and the fluro, worked for me at least when I pulled as hard as I could on the two lines they didn't come apart. I know I need glasses but geeze I was starting to sweat and getting pi$$ed never had trouble like that, now I hope it works as good as they claim, did you guys that ran the micro line get deeper than the conventional cores? Thanks guys for any input PAP
  12. I tried it they roll over and they don't pull out like the big boards and the tow line drags in the water, they just don't have enough pull to keep the tow line tight and you get a big bow in the line and when a fish hits the release just jiggles on the line on the account of all the slack in the tow line. If you have a mast you need the double planer boards. I made my own for litterly peanuts. All you need is a 8ft 1x6 8 pieces of all thread, 24 nuts and washers and 2 eye bolts with 4 nuts and washers a saw and a drill. Guys on here have good plans or look them up on line, they give you all the numbers and instructions its simple.
  13. I think the metal bodies were 12# max and the composite bodies one were 10#s I have both styles and the composite body one is cracked where the boom inserts into the body I had Butch make a steel ring to go around the body where the boom fits in, he made it tight that we had to tap it on with a hammer and screwed it fast so far so good until I find a metal body to put all my parts into
  14. I have the older Mag 10's and I never really thought that they were slow but I've never fished with the newer style and I never had one stop so fast it ripped off either, I run 12# pancakes before and now I own a pair of 12# torpedoes from Harry. I like Les like the slow mode as it's usually just the two of us and I'm the rod man while my uncles name is "skipper" for a reason (LOL) if your rigger is that slow there must be a problem somewhere. I would say it picks up a foot every second so if your down 60 ft or so, it's like a minute, that sounds about right I guess? I'm a firm believer in the faster you go the longer it takes.LOL when I'm out there fishing I'm enjoying ever minute, taking in the view and smelling the roses as I'm making my way over the water.
  15. There was talk about your problem over the winter months but I forget what the remedy was hopefully someone with a better memory will chime in or you could google it and see what happens, maybe that's were I saw it now that I think about it.
  16. Yea, like all the above said totally awsome day, seemed like a lot of goby rat pics. It was quite generous of you to post the pics. of the lures you used!!! Very Nice!!!
  17. This guy that used to go to Canada with us had old merc. 10 horse and a 8 horse motors they were from the 50's. He has a auto repair shop and a salvage yard for as long as I can remember and he also was the first guy in the area to sell Amsoil, and they were 40:1 mix, he mixed the Amsoil 100:1 in those old motors and they ran flawless, I would have never believed that if I didn't see for myself. Before he switched over from the conventional oil to this synthetic he said he used to bring a box of plugs, now he brings just a few for spares just in case one goes bad. I also used the Amsoil in a 1988 Evinrude 88SPL I had on a 18fter. I was Leary of the 100:1 mix so I ran the boat hard for a short time and shut it off, pulled the plugs and to my surprise the plugs were light color brown perfect!!! After I switched to the synthetic oil I went the whole season on a set of plugs and I also use it in my kicker which also used to foul a plug every now and then, now I go a whole season on a set of plugs. Now I don't use my motors as much as the guys that are lucky enough to live by LakeO so that could be a factor as to why I go from season to season. The synthetic oil smokes less and you use less so that off sets the higher cost, I figured it out to be almost the same figuring in the cost of plugs.
  18. Yea, he's around I just received my weights a week ago.
  19. Gotta love that eye, Choo Choo, thanks for sharing and congrats on your trip!!!
  20. If your looking for the cheapest rout, I would look into Cabelas Depth Master, and get the depth master III (3) don't buy the depth master II (2) You can pick them up on sale for $39.00 regularly $59.00 and get the DMIII30 the old DMII30's were ok but guys complained the counter reset button stuck down and you can purchase a combo for under $80.00 but that's on sale you would have to go on their site for the prices. I just went on their site and their DM30III are on sale for $41.99. I swear they are made by Okuma, the cold water style they look identical, the thru bolts are in the same place and the counters look the same I could be wrong. For $89.98 you can get a Daiwa AccuDepth with a Cabelas trolling rod, these are on sale also. Just a thought for you if your not sure this fishing is for you. Good luck whichever direction you choose.
  21. Nice going KingMe those lures sure do produce!!!
  22. We have a Cabelas store about 1 hour ride from the house, it's nice to see the actual product instead of a picture in a catalog, but I can say with confidence that Cabelas is NOT the cheapest game in town, for instance our local bait and tackle shop is $.99 cheaper on Rapala lures and a lot cheaper with Smithwick lures and seagar fluro line ect. and when it comes to flashers I had the Color Fireworks that flasher we couldn't keep in the water, we ran down to Fat Nancy's and they were sold out, but the guy behind the counter asked what I was looking for and I told him I really want the fireworks pattern on a Echip 11" flasher, he asked how many did I want, I said I'll take 4 if you have them, he said how about 2 now and pick up the other 2 on your way home. He said give me a 1/2 hour so we went to the diner up the road came back and he made 2 for us, now that's service and I paid for the 4 of them and on the way home we picked up the other 2. They get my business bought 2 slide divers and they have a selection of spoons. Like the other shops around the lake they are the only places to get some of the must need items. I can't wait to get a few of the Bob Fuller spoons and the Great Lakes spoons and there is another small company I can't rember but they are to come out soon also. It's great to see these smaller company's makeing a come back, I wish the best for them!! I remember the name of the spoon now it's the Revolutionary spoon company, the guy that owns that company, comes from my home town Kunkletown PA. Small world. He is on this site also.
