  1. I got a question, what is those white circles with wire clips on in the tackle box to the far right along some sort of metal thing the tackle box has jay plugs in it and on the next shelf down are white circles with a metal clip on them. I have these things also and don't know what they are. thanks pap.
  2. Congrats. on your catch, the fish of 10,000 casts treated you guys very well. Keep up the good work and please post with your pictures, as things are winding down so the post and pics. are getting less!!!!
  3. Congrats. to your catch!! The fish of 10,000 casts don't come easy! best of luck to you on your next muskellunge, hopefully as big if not bigger. PAP
  4. Over the last 30 years we planned our walleye trips with the weeks of the 3 days before and the three days after a full moon, with only a weeks time we either chose the before or after days and always the 2nd or the 3rd week of June, that was for Canadian trips I don't think it matters where your fishing. My brother- in- law, is a hard core archery hunter and has a lease in Ohio and plans all his trips around the moon phases, he even has some sort of wheel "chart" that he uses and I don't think there are to many hunters that have 26" spread bucks on the wall like he does, so I think it matters. I also wanted to mention when we got to our Canadian destination we always asked the guys how they did and if it was the week of before the 3 days of a full moon they usually said, "we really had to work for them" we knew that our trip was going to be good but in reality they all were good, just the moon phases were better. When I go up to the camper in the BRCG I usually based it on the moon phases.

Hey, that's a sweet looking pill, I didn't even know they made that cartridge till I just looked it up. My cousin has it in the 243 wssm cartridge which I thought was sweet.
  6. I was talking to one of our fine members the other day and he commented that he couldn't buy a fish using baits such as sticks, tail dancer, ect. He claimed it was a spoon show the whole year, and speeds he used the s turns method and let the fish tell him what they want, also the nk28 seemed to work the best. So to determine what for speed I will try the S turn method and also this week we had a member land a 13#+ walleye on a spoon also, at 3mph. Another post I remember reading was a man & wife going over the water with not their usual boat and headed to their honey hole and the wife says why don't we troll over, he throws lure overboard over 5mph and till got settled in wham fish on, so again speed was above the norm but worked. I think this thread is very interesting so far, putting a bunch of ideas together for spring. Thanks for every ones input, lets not stop here!!!

I couldn't agree with you more JT. One thing that sticks in my head is I went to a coyote calling sem. Held by Dennis Kirk very informative and his last statement was you will never kill one sitting in front of the TV. How true, I love calling, shot a few in my time, and got busted more than I shot. But it is a true adrenalin rush when they are coming in, and until it's over it's a nerve racking event. I thought I could shoot with the best of them free hand but I must admit I get yote. fever and had to put a set of Harris bipods on my rifle which helped me immensely on my hit ratio. I'm not a pelt hunter I'm out to kill, there are so many killing off the deer pop. it's bad. PA. game comm. brought in "Quote" sharp shooters to hunt them in the developments because fido, and little pussy cats and other type pets were getting missing. My favorite dog gun is my 25,06 it gets the job done and if you hit one there's not much looking around, usually they don't move off the spot. My other favorite is my Remington SP 10 gauge with dead coyote choke tube and 3-1/2 mag dead coyote shot, I've killed one 80 paces with it, it looked like you shot into a lime bag, total devastation!!!

    Dunkirk NY Report

Thanks for reply, I hate the word NETS. As a younger boy 40 years ago, I remember a guy who had a bullhead netting license on the Perch River where we had property also and we were only 2 or 3 houses up from him. Which was grandfathered to him and he used to set that thing right where the Perch and the Black River Bay joined and every year it would get set more close to the Black river, there is a big mud flat that basically separated the 2 rivers and one year we made it our business to actually see what he's catching and we were surprised to see lots of walleye, perch, browns and of course bullheads, but the other species were out numbering the bullheads. Someone photographed it. There were no phones and movie cameras then, and in the local paper, the Watertown Daily Times, Latest news section, he was prosecuted and lost his license. That was a good thing, but it took it toll on the fishery as this was going on for years, his father made a living off of this trade and then the son took over and I remember he had it for years till greed to over and that was the end of that.

    Lake Erie Perch

Jimski2 no other words could have said it better, if you have guys willing to communicate is a wonderful way of gaining knowledge, and our electronic have come a long way, I know I said to my fish finder, that can't possible be right and left a situation or I can't believe there's no fish here? when there actually was, fish finders couldn't locate fish tight to the bottom or even off a few inches. The more powerful units are way better than the used to be. I know my uncle used to have a trailer in the BRCG. and he and his wife would go out in the Black River Bay and look for 50+ feet of water and in no time have a cooler half full. They lived there in the summer month so no need for limits or a full cooler, they just went back out for more, but yea 50+ we couldn't believe it!

Why would they have nets? or are they a release type of net or something, just curious (maybe concerned) if they are kill nets.

YEA, MeatHunter737, I agree he's got a problemLOL. but I know in person how hard it is, when you think about all day & night can't sleep, I'm 48 years old and still act like a kid at Christmas, the first Sat. in May I've launched at 12:01am and came in at 6:00 am to pick up the other guys. It's way better than drugs but just as addictive. I used to be like that with deer season, but the older I get the more I loose interest with it. Again it's not what it used to be, for one it's so built up around here, and like I said earlier I'm 48 so all or most of the guys we hunted with are gone or just can't do it anymore and I like to gang hunt at one time we needed 2 rosters 35-40 guys and we could cover huge spots that other guys couldn't and the first chase always produced enough camp meat for the week. That's another thing everybody had off the first week, now they usually just hunt the first 2 days then back to work, so that left me and a handful of younger guys and a truck load of handicaps. I'm not one to sit in a tree for hours on end. Fishing, I can take the older guys it's not so demanding of the body, and they can drive wile I set lines, set hooks and hand off the pole so I can get the net, while listing to Korea war stories or Vietnam happenings the guys that were over there, one who is a vey close friend, still goes to the V.A for mental support and was told to talk about it for therapy, has told me stories that are hard to imagine that one could still function in the general public, I guess that's why he visits the VA every Thurs. since the return to the US. It's sad but I try to take him every chance I get. So fishing we all can do and have fun together and if we come up with a skunk, we had fun, and when we fish for the walleyes and nail a few well, that's a chattering all the way to the fillet table. Fishing = good time with great friends and its just a great sport, no arguing you weren't in line, how the hell did you miss that one it just about ran you over on and on. Keep fishing, I wish I lived close to a lake like Otisco, you guys are really blessed, take care of what you got and it will treat you well for years PAP.
  14. Welcome Aboard Hans, This is the right board for your business, I know a lot of guys went to kickers instead of trolling with the main engine!! and I hear a lot of complaining when they don't work right, Treat theses guys right and you won't have time to go fishing LOL. Anyway ask questions even if you think they are stupid, because they told me there is no such thing as a stupid question. There are a lot of well informative guys on here that will help you with just about anything. be a member awhile then join the pro section to help the web site. Being a pro member doesn't mean you have to be a pro fisherman it helps support the site that Chad has worked his but off to make this site one of the greatest sites on the internet!!! by the way I'm PAP. I'm sure we will meet up on the site soon, as I'm a motor head also.
  15. Gator that sounds like a real adrenaline rush!! I'd like to do it with 2-3fters and 35mph and hang on!!!
  16. Thanks for sharing
  17. I figured I would start this topic since there seems to be a big variation from one person to another. Please tell us how fast or slow you troll for walleyes to be successful and what works best for you, harnesses or stick baits or tail dancers ect. In a way it will help some of us stuck in the 1.5-2.0 mph days understand what works and what doesn't. Not asking any spots, just lures and speed. Thanks PAP.

Congrats. on your catch, I was wondering the 3 folks that hit this lake at night, how far of a ride is it to the lake for you. One fish is better than no fish. Like my chickens sometimes I get 4 eggs and sometimes I get 6. something is better than nothing and every time you learn a little something, to hopefully make the next time maybe a 2 fish night. It sounds a lot like our lake here at home if you get 2-3 eyes your on fire. Beltzville lake is 13 miles long and 3/4 miles wide again as big as Otisco, so makes for lots more trolling time, but if you put time in you will catch a walleye, like Otisco they are big. The lake gave up a 13.3/4 pounder 2 years ago, but the norm is 20-24", this lake is so loaded with alewives that they stocked Stripped bass in about 7 years ago, and know people come from all over to troll at night for the stripers.
  19. The townspeople didn't want the town folks to know what the real effect of this tragic happening, I had access to more info than most, can't explain why just did, and that definitely changed the fishing of the Black River Basin to what it is now, I remember a guy up the Perch river who had a supposedly bullhead catfish netting license which he would set in the spring where the perch and the bay meet, but towards the Black more, there is a big mud flat there, were many boats a year get hung up. you have to go down the north shore quite a ways before you can cut over to the buoys and on that flat is where the walleye spawn and this is where he would set his "catfish" nets. It was grandfathered to him, he lost his license in 93. I remember drifting in to cat tails and casting stick baits and nailing nice walleye and little ones also 4-5 inch also, the females we left go but the jacks 18" and up we kept, that's when we had property on the perch river, we sold the property and put camper in the BRCG, before Allen and his Laura owned it, I forget their names. If the winds blew south west for a day it was phenomenal fishing, but the netter messes that area up by taking all the fish perch, walleye females, jacks whatever, that time frame is when the walleye started to go downhill and the stocking of the Black stopped. The lake was green in color which the zebra's cleaned up so I don't think the numbers of walleye spawn there like they once did. At one time in the mid to late 80's you didn't need to go past the last buoy to limit out on the walleye. The younger Gen. doesn't know how it used to be, but are knowledgeable about the new stealthy ways to catch walleyes. Yes the golden crescent is a walleye haven, but nothing like it was, so change is the name of the game!!
  20. Yea I hear ya there, we kill a beef every year and know what that's like with everything right in front of you and on dry land and a skid steer, we killed a Mule deer years back and 4 of us could barely move it, when this guy came down the same trail we were on with a 4 wheeler and asked us if he could help, of course we said yes. He hooked on that animal and drug it like it was nothing, those 4 wheelers are powerful!!! I couldn't believe it, it didn't even lift the front up or sound like it labored at all. He put it in gear and took off amazing!! I was glad to see that guy.
  21. I would like to change mine to electric also but the price, ouch, I'm in need of a 4xd fish hawk more, so I have to choose 1 thing at a time or the wife gets excited.
  22. Marty, I did a Google search and nowhere did I see a completely remote system, it comes with remote switches, so I doubt that means remote in hand from anywhere control in or out. come with remote rocker switches that can be mounted anywhere is what they say from their site
  23. Really nice looking animal, they are huge looking at the pics. How does one move such a beast? I see a 4 wheeler but I don't think you could get it to where the animal was? My brother shot one up in Newfoundland, and the meat was very good, I thought it had a sweetmeat flavor, Excellent hunt and Excellent table fare!!!
  24. Same here, I'm going to start at 2.2mph and go faster until 3mph, then back down PAP.
