Justin, I was so sorry to hear that "Lil" passed away. I'm sure that you will have many great memories of her. I know that your heart must be full of sorrow at this time, but you have received a great gift having to harvest a few yotes with her. though she will be greatly missed, you will always have a special place in your heart for her, a place that that only you and Tracy can share. God bless her and keep her close and may you and your family have piece knowing that she is in a very special place now, Your Friend PAP

There are quite a few walleye fisherman out there, for some reason unlike the Erie guys that will help you out with just about anything the Ontario guys are very tight lipped about the walleye, It isn't like there is a shortage of walleye, according to the people doing the reports on the walleye reproduction and survival rate, the walleyes are doing well in Ontario. In the 80's it was much easier to catch walleye, before the zebra's came to town, I did well with them especially in the spring Black river bay was a blast, now I struggle to catch a few, but I did see guys do well, cleaning fish at BRCG. I saw the biggest walleyes I ever laid eyes on, so there out there, just have to figure them out on your own. I wanted to ask the question, but I just didn't have the balls to, as I figured I knew the answer I would of got and didn't want to make it a uncomfortable situation as we were cleaning some walleye that came out of the Black River that my 8 year old daughters caught 22-24" those guys had 30" and up, I did find out that they came out of the Henderson area, If those guys belong to this site, NICE catch guys!!

Dexter salmon regs question

You can use any lure made out there with only one requirement the triple hooks are not to exceed 1/2" from the barb to the shank, measuring strait across. That came right out of the mouth of the fish com. which had two younger people on board, guy and a younger lady. I have a camper in the BRCG. Go up under the bridge in the center you should of noticed a deep hole 30ft deep, mark the top and go 40ft above hole and anchor up let out 40ft of line with a size 3 J plug and lower rigger ball down till 18" off the bottom when they come out of the hole from their rest your lure is right in their face and WHAM GOTCH YA, sometimes there is a drift boat there but he usually favors the pier towards the camp site and usually fishes an hour before dark till 9pm or so, so there is plenty of room for the both of you, he uses a huge split back lure bright orange. I met a guy named Roland up there and he swears that, get the biggest flat fish you can find, he uses natural colors, I kept this under my hat for years, I use a spinner bait the biggest brightest color I can find, you have to fish the spinner bait close to the ball or it will settle to the bottom if the currant is really fast, I fish it 18" from the ball about 2ft. off the bottom it out fished the guide, the flat fish, this set up works. It's easy fishing. If you have another rigger run a flat fish near the bottom and a stacker with a J plug near the surface. I caught a few in my time with this set up. PAP. -
Way to go JT. the walleye like I said before are very nice size, just right for table fare. One thing I noticed is they all seem to be in the 20/22" range or do you put some smaller size ones back, would be interesting to know, and the last two posts you mentioned that you had some heavy hitters, just wondering what your thoughts were on that (Tigers) I can't believe that such nice walleye come out of Otisco with the Muskies in there up to and beyond 48" as they are lean mean walleye eating machines, and you catch the tigers trolling for walleye, so they must share the same waters (meaning you go north end for tigers and south for walleye) one way or another they are holding their own. Nice report and always a couple of great pictures, keep them coming congrats on the whole program you got going on JT. PAP.

Hey Tim what do you recommend in the Garmin line, I'm looking also to purchase a Fish Hawk, the 4xd, From reading what the guys say about the hawk, I don't think you really need the top of the line fish finder, as long as it has at least 4000 watts and a 83/200 capacity ducer that should be good enough to find structure and depth and enough memory for a 1ft, or 3ft contour map the hawk will do the rest and. the gps for location. That should be a good set up. I don't think I am going with the finder/gps in one deal it seem like it comes to the same amount of $$ either way and if one or the other pukes your not totally out of commission, just my two cents, after the Elite7 horror story I went through I'm leaning towards splitting them up, maybe others have no trouble with the hds units, but if you read Cabelas and Bass Pro comments on other units it seem like a lot of other people have troubles also, and the guys running the 585 and the 600 series must have a separate gps. as they are finders only.
-
What ever you decide to do DO-NOT buy the ELITE 7, I have had nothing but trouble with it. Send it back Lowrance said everything was good to go, yea right, same thing as before depth jumps all around and they don't have enough memory to run cards with 1ft contours. Took it back and put my old Humming Bird 727 back on. Leaning towards the 585 with a Lowrance 5hds gps.

How long are the booms on the mag 10's -
It's a shame they don't improve their drag system, one time they work, the next time it's like you locked them up, once set they are ok to say the least, but every time make sure the drag is where you want it(pain in the but) if they would improve their drag system they would be a good weekend fisher mans reel. I agree with stay away from Cabelas reels but you can get good reels in the $80/90 range if your not a everyday all year long fisherman. If you are I agree with the rest of the guys, get the best and be done with it.

I will definitely miss you and your mrs, the both of you work together like a well oiled machine, she gets right in there just like the pro's , and some of the guys I had on my boat I would trade for Theresa any day of the week. I just can't believe that the season came and went already, here is to a great year and hope all is well through the winter months and the holidays. I was hoping that the fishing would last a few more weeks, I'm heading in the hospital for back surgery on the 18th of Sept. and they tell me 6/8 weeks till I'm back on my feet hopefully 100% , so next year in the spring we will be ready for the browns and walleye and then the kings. Take care PAP.

That was a real First class act on your part Jplug, I'm sure that guy appreciates the effort and thought you went through to get this bag back. It's nice to see and hear that there are some respectable folks out there yet, and to read something about someone doing a good deed out of the goodness of their heart. You will be rewarded in some way, some day it will come in a form of, the big guy in sky was looking over me. why, oh yea that time I gave that black bag back to that guy. Hmmm?

I never fished the bay, (Black River Bay) to big of an area, I do fish the Black River though with a good amount of success, I usually set up in the first turn down from the Dexter launch about 2/3rds the way down just before the ripples end then anchor up and I usually use my down riggers and put out a J plug(flor.orange/firetiger) about 30ft line then lower the ball almost against the bottom, it's like only 8-10ft deep, but there is a deep hole they have to come out of and your plugs will be right in their face. The other rigger I swing out into the current and run a chrome dodger with a fly or anything that whips around a lot, or I also used little Cleo's with some degree of success, later in the year you might hook up with a steel head or a brown, I also have hooked up with a Coho and a occasional walleye on the Cleo's. hope this helps as I caught quite a few this way, and is easy fishing. We also caught them just trolling with the brightest, ugliest lure you have in the box, they are striking out of aggression this time of the year.

SharkHunter I noticed in the one photo where you are holding up a real nice king I noticed that there was a plastic rod holder reinforced with a piece of pvc pipe, are you using those style holders for salmon fishing if so how are they holding up. I never thought of reinforcing them with anything, good Idea!!. I have 4 of the berts rod holders and looking to add 2 more I have 4 or more of the same type you have and if you never had any break I'll use those as I'm not always going to be using them, but in the spring for brown and walleye they should make the grade. I was trolling for walleye one year and something hit with such great force it sheared one of my plastic ones right off, thinking a big Northern didn't lose my rod but didn't get to see what is was either. -
I have replaced the transoms on 4 boats it's a project and not something to take on if you are in a hurry or not that handy with wood working tools or the ability to adapt and overcome in such a situation that you might think it's a short cut that will bite you in the as$ later in the project. An other thing you need to be experienced in is fiberglass work, which I had some of each and it came in handy especially in the fiberglass end of the job. The trick is to keep the outside piece of glass as intact as much as possible, then cut the inside away to get at the 3/4 ply board. Having worked at a stair making facility I made the whole transom piece out of 5/4 board green decking mat. I planed both sides glued them together in a glue rack and then planed them down to 3/4 so we had a solid piece of pressure treated board 4ft tall by 3/4 thick and what ever length was needed, then start putting everything back together. Usually takes me 3 days.

I've read a report some time back SK8Man actually put a hook on the flasher and I think he caught one just to prove a thought.

Get a can of black spray paint for plastic bumpers, works great, I tried it on one of my Dipsies I had a bunch of those orange/yellow and painted them green, I'll have to try the black if it's working still next year. I'm done for the year headed back under the knife for my back AGAIN sucks but I'll be ready for the browns in the spring. PAP

Thanks SK8man You certainly have a wealth of info. stored up there. Thanks for the loads of info. I'm only 47 years old and have the nick name PAP, I'm constantly being told I should of been born 50 years ago, I guess my actions and thoughts are old fashion, and I am one for the old school ways. My boat is 31 years old, all my fishing stuff is older also, my new depth finder didn't last long either, I took that piece of $hit back it was a Elite7 don't purchase one of those units unless you have stock in a migraine pill comp. My down riggers are electric but are older and I don't know Even what they are other than cannons with a 4ft booms, so I will put some of these old school lures and ways to use. One other thing. the Sutton 71's what other number was a 44 I think what were they supposed to imitate. Thanks pap.

LongLine, there are 3 lures stamped by Hofschnieder one is a huge spinner with a copper blade which is where it is stamped, it's got a pretty heavy wire with a loop on the end where you attach your line, then 3 red beads a crimped stop then 3 red beads, then a stop the blade a stop,3 more red beads and a huge swinging treble hook. Looks sweet, and the other 2 are redeyes, which both have a weird double hook on each end, so where do you attach your line? the Canadian wiggler which is still in the original box has a weird set up of 2 treble hooks on the front, it has a strait wire that goes left and right of the lure with 2 little treble hooks attached to each end of the wire and one a little bigger on the back. I looked up the lure and there is a vintage site that dated back to the early 50's but this doesn't look like those, so it says it could be early 40's when they first came out. "My room" in the basement, I have antique lures and these are going to be added to my collection, I just started collecting old lures, I don't buy them if I run across them, then I add them to my collection I might have 15-18 but these will put me near 20 now. It's fun!!
