I feel better knowing that" The all you can eat perch each Friday ?, Are also all other fish cut down to perch fillets.
Oh well I will try to eat the jumbo Gobies. Might be tasty ?
I did a check on the invasive seafood....NEVER eat any Gobies They eat the very toxic Zebra and Quahog muscles.
I almost forgot all the meat hunters in my Clayton area. The 5 gallon fill the pails people. Neighbor extra restaurant sales. Different religious farmers with buckets. Tourists
Oh well. I limited to 5 fish. No big breeders. 8 to 12 " only.
My areacrashed right after central sewage system removed all sewage from upriver areas There are no weed beds anywhere now.
Oh well.
Hi everybody.
The 2 old guys & 1 grand son in a 18 1/2' bow rider. 220 hp V 8 to run for it . It handles 3' waves fine.
We want to fish within site of land. We will be doing the launchs from Cape Vincent, N Y. Will start about May 25.
What can we expect in the river mouth and along the USA lake shore line? Our trolling will be with the small Dipsey Divers to get down.
Any advice will help the grandson smile. Perch are great. Anything larger is a plus.
Thank you
Rich
We used to just put ALL covers on the boat. Seems like the warmer water heated the bottom of the boat & then that deck heat was slowly released thru the covers in place. Very light skim ice would be the worst for us on the St. Lawrence at Clayton N Y.
We also put a piece of plastic over the openings around the stern drive hatch openings. So far so good.
Thank you Chas & Carp.
Looks like Wendsday or Thursday if they get & install the Wander Fin on the boat. I picked up a heavy saltwater spinning out fit. I am also waiting for a clip release to use on the Dipsey Diver. Many years ago ??
I used to use the rubber bands as releases. But I was not getting a lot of solid hookups at +-150' down in a N J lake. they would hold it for 3 to 10 seconds & release it. True, I was using 6# to 8# mono right to the lures with the rubber bands.
Thanks again Dave.
I have no need of Dipsies or keel weights in the river. I use those weights that have a piece of rubber in them. On heavy line. They slide easy enough at the end of the fight.
Might use them on the upper lures in the lake.
I find the fish get agressive after I pass over them.
Hi Dave.
The 50# Dacron is for the the DEEP Dipsies with the large Rapalas that are in a Emerald shad color about 100' to 150' back. We will run 2 keel weighted RAPALA Emeralds maybe 8' to 10' down also. about 150' also.
We are not to concerned about the body counts. We bring food to eat.
Almost forgot. How long of a leader is enough for lake fish if they get to spooked up ?
Rich
I found a site that is a DNR of lake Erie. Complete with a rod line covered by them.
The fleas are as bad as stated by BIG DAVE.
Thanks guys. I really appreciate the warning about them.
I will stay in the river & let you have all the Big Fish. Enjoy.
I have never had a problem with fleas in the St. Lawrence River. It is fed with water from Lake Ontario.
I guess the fleas could not pay the toll fees to enter the river ?
Have to do better than the lake is filled with line grabbing fleas.
You mentioned fleas building up on the line & jaming in the guides on another posted thread. What good is using braid with that problem compared to a slick strand of Flourocarbon or outragously strong Monofilament.
I am missing knowledge of the flea problem ? My gut reaction is, less fleas on a solid line. During peak flea times, a changeover to solid is required ?
I read up on the fleas & they are everywhere since about 1987 ?
Does anybody use it for 100' to 150' trolling of large lures ? 10" to 13" size ? Do you wind up using keel weights or something else ?
How would I know what depth my lures are running ? Or do I just count on a attack from deep fish ?
Or do I ask a buddy in his boat to eyeball the lure while I troll ?
I am not a deep water person. But I do want to learn more about the effect of depth on a lures depth while trolling.
Dipsey Diver has a nice chart for depth controls. Should I just start & stay with the Dipsey ?
Thanks
Rich
A 18 1/2' Chaparral bow rider with a 220 hp 5 L V8.
And a friends 20' woody Lyman. Restored 4 cylinder crown under 100 hp.
I was in the Chaparral& almost sunk by the bow wave of a passing freighter. the wave hit the rock ledge we were just over. Wave went from 2' to 6' instantly. water ran up to within 6" of the winshield top. Got very lucky as I managed to get going to a panicked full reverse & kept water out of the boat. Bow was stuck in the base of the tallest wave of the group for 6 hours. Seemed that way.
My concern is wave heights on a pleasant day with about 10 to 15 mph breeze ?
Or how many days do I get with no more than 2' to 3' waves at the peak of afternoon winds ? I have always fished around Clayton N Y.
We can do morning runs if better, in a 19 Chaparral bow rider with a 220 hp V8. We would run out of Cape Vincent, N Y.
Name: Cyclops2
Location: Clayton, N Y
I need something bigger than Clayton, N Y river fish. & more than a couple a day.
I used to do the Oswego 30 years ago. Salmon River. Sandy.
Retired & I need a larger daily catch & release count.
I enjoy trolling 100' to 200' of lures.
Really want to operate out of the Cape Vincent port this summer.
I usually take other retirees out & some of the kids also. Will fish within 2 miles of shore then.
What kind of waves does the lake put up during the after noon breezes ? The river does about 1' or 2' at Clayton, N Y.
Thanks for any help.
