Doing something very wrong on Keuka..... any help?
guff replied to bulletbob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
It has been about 3 weeks now but we did well near Camp Good Days across from the state park. Good number of hungry fish and some bait schools. I had tried earlier around the bluff where we used to do very well but as everyone else says I had poor results. The females we were getting then had not spawned yet so they may have moved to the points to spawn by now. I would be out covering the north Branchport end if I had better luck deer harvesting. Very poor deer population on my 50 acres this year. I know I am crazy for saying it but my neighbor says he saw and I may have heard a mountain lion in my woods. Also big reduction in squirrel numbers. DEC would say I am nuts but who knows. -
Best bet jigging lakers next few weeks?

Still some good laker jigging on Branchport end. Neighbor boy had 3 in the boat in first 15 minutes before his brother and I even got our jig in the water. 13 total in 4 hours. 65-85 fow. But the deer woods calls. Lots of buck movement around right now. Cross bow Saturday. Why does all the good fishing and hunting hit at the same time??? Not complaining mind you though. -
Best bet jigging lakers next few weeks?

Hit Keuka Monday from the state park launch with my two neighbor boys. Went to the end of the bluff early. Very little going on there. Fish I had seen last week seemed to have moved somewhere else. Headed back towards the state park around 2. Surprised to find lakers along the west shore across from the launch and further north in 80- 120 fow. Got 4 (21-25 ") by 4:30. Not too bad for an afternoon bite I think. Saw quite a few bait schools also. They liked a 1 oz jig (hermit's of course) painted black with a white paddle tail. Females were full of eggs. The neighbor boys had never jigged for lakers before. I think they are hooked now. They really loved watching the fish finder screen, especially a few times when they saw the lakers head for the jig and then slam it. Fun day. A couple years ago we hooked and released over 100 lakers at the bluff over 2 days at the end of October. Definitely not the same situation Monday. Maybe they will move in and cooperate later on but cross bow season starts soon.. -
Any positive or negative recent reports on Keuka. Do love grilled Keuka lakers but they need to cooperate for that to happen.

Wednesday's trip to Dean Cove was kind of a flop fish numbers wise. Hermit , Doug, and I ended up with only one nice eater size laker. But the main reason was the wind was howling out of the south. Cut the trip short as a result. Unfortunately Hermit got wet a few times when a wave came over the bow. (sorry Alec) . Ran into a couple of charter captains back at the launch and they had an off day also. Was the first time out of Deans for me and it will not be the last. Hermit gave us some good pointers on where to fish (thanks Alec) and the trip for us will actually be shorter than when we go to Sampson. And the road into Deans is not speed bump city as the Sampson park road is.

Hi jk1 - Sorry to hear about not too good results at the bluff. Decided on Dean's cove for tomorrow when I saw John Gaulke Saturday report. Holy cow, he jigged 2/3 of Seneca all day and got zilch. Man, if the super expert can not get them there there is no hope for me. Turns out we will have a full boat tomorrow. Taking no chances. Taking the second ranking jigging expert Hermit (Alec) with us. Ha Ha. Will let you know how we do. - Al

Bullet bob - I'll bet jk1 is right on the "perch minnows". They look sort of like a real perch but not exactly. Also they are so small they dissolve rapidly and you just see a black mush mostly. This will be the first time, but think my fishing buddy and i will try out of Dean's Cove Wednesday. Never been there. Did not realize it was about the same travel distance for us as going to Sampson. jk1, did you get there today? any luck? Not giving up on Keuka but trying some new territory might be fun.

Hi Alec - Thanks for the trailer hook info. I tried it out last time but I got the hook too close to the paddletail so it stopped the tail action . Tied another one in the boat(what a pain) with hook further back and that helped but I need some size 2 hooks which of course I do not have in my tackle box with 150 items in it. For some reason the Keuka lakers no longer seem to want the tube arrangement i used when you and I cleaned their clock at the bluff. They like a green paddletail however. Jigging results seem to have slowed down the last couple of years for a variety of reasons. Our (you and I) 65 fish day in late October at the bluff is still the best day in my boat ever. Seems like jigging for lakers on Keuka has changed some. Think the sawbelly population is down but think lakers are eating other bait which results in nice salmon colored flesh which is very tasty. Finding perch minnows in them. May need to find smaller size jigs or some other solution. Who knows. Looks like jk1 is still doing well however. Going to hit Seneca next. Usually a good time of year there. From all the LOU reports it sounds like Cayuga was (is) on fire this year. Head to Quebec on our annual walleye trip at the end of the August. Look forward to that.

Guess it was someone else you talked to but do remember your boat being close by. We are full time jiggers. Do love feeling the strike when the bad boys hit. Is a lot of fun. We fish Belhurst area. Some mighty big Lakers there. My fishing buddy got the $2000 biggest lake trout there during the derby this year.not bragging. Just stating facts. But Lakers there can be mighty finicky when they want to be. 20 hours of jigging during derby and only 2 trout. But did get the right one

Jk 1 - think we were one of those boats. Red Lund. Did not do as good as you. Did have several short hits but only 1 got into boat. Tried hermits trailer hook design but need to perfect it. Have tried tube with treble hooks up inside skirt but got more hits on green paddletails. Good news is lot of fish at end of bluff as usual. Nice tasty orange meat on the one we got. Found one inch perch minnow inside him. Think their diet has changed. Stopped at the Switzerland inn for a cold drink before we packed it up. Got hot out there in afternoon

Found a good number of lakers halfway from the old power plant to Eggleston Point (between east shore and the bluff) last Friday (109-117 fow) but could not get them to hit the jig. On a good note the ones we got in that area a couple of weeks ago had salmon colored meat that was extremely tasty. Maybe the change in diet from sawbellies to something else will result in very tasty fish. I found 14 two inch perch minnows in some I caught in that area last year.

Would second everything PCpete said except I like spinning rods. Also I get most of my lakers on the retrieve coming up from near the bottom. I also definitely use Hermit's super sharp jigs. Paddle tails threaded on the jigs are also good laker lures.

Sorry - a little confusion here. The 13.81 pound laker came from Seneca during the trout derby. I myself have caught very few lakers out of Keuka that were larger than 6 pounds but the smaller ones from Keuka are very tasty.

Big guy was 13.81 pounds

Good bite yesterday morning at the Branchport end in 60-75 fow. Various plastics worked but 3/4 oz. Kastmasters seemed particularly effective. Lakers were from 17-23 inches long. Will be grilling some tonight. Boated 11 but missed several hits and had a number of hooked fish come off before they made it to the boat. Replacing the treble hook on the Kastmaster with a top quality hook is a good idea as we found out the hard way. Heard a report from the very friendly fellow at the boat launch that took the weeds off my trailer that lakers also were active out in 130 fow. Beautiful day out there. On another note, 3 of us only caught 2 lakers jigging over 2 days at the trout derby but one of them was the biggest lake trout entered. My fishing partner that caught the big guy was shaking like a leaf as he filled out the forms at the weigh in station. Sure does get your heart pumping.
