The best copper is un-kinked copper ..... All brands mentioned are good, try to be consistent with what you use. The best I've ever used was some bulk stuff I found in Dunkirk, no name, soft, low memory, didn't kink, can't find anymore.
White spinners with blue or black or green fly
Yellow spinner with green fly
These two (5) combos will fish with 80% efficiency
I prefer e chip spinners with Moonshine Flys behind black dipsys
Data is only as good as the interpretation of said data. The captain must process the data and make the right decision.
The Fishhawk provides two data points that I need, but the importance of those points varies ... The more the data changes the more important it becomes.
Changes in data requires changes tactics....if those changes are not made or ignored the data is useless.
The best strategy is to use all data points to quickly find the fish and load up on them because enough fish in the box is a data point that can make others irrelevant.
Did the regs say anything about the birds?? I'm thinking they need to wash their feet, certainly they need sanitary regulations -- all those seeds flying around.
As for boaters.....support your local Marina.....use their launches.....pay them to spray down your boat.
I run 100+ days on Lake Ontario began using down temp in the late 70's on a Rivera down rigger and I have always had a downtempo unit in the water. In the late '80s I began using the Fishhawk and I have not had any reason to use any other brand since. I really can't honestly talk about "thousands" of fish I caught and where........it takes me about a season to catch that many, but I can say that most every day I will catch fish in the temp and speed zone. I do know that my current Fishhawk has fished close to 1000 days and I have used 36 AA batteries and I have had to repair a probe that I dropped a cannonball on ($99)
My honest opinion is that the fishing on Lake Ontario is so "stupid" easy that all you need is a way to get your lures to run between 50-70' and ride around the lake.....pretty sure thousands of fish have been caught between 50-70'........so unless you are tourney fishing or a professional, it may not be worth it to invest in this technology. A Moonshine Carbon 14 will attract fish and cause them to move 30' vertically and bite it only costs $9!...... It's all about priorities!
Any law that limits the liberty of people is a good law.
I can't wait for the law that requires a safety course for shopping, hiking, bike riding, snowshoeing, jogging, smoking, skiing, barbecuing, fun loving, texting, phoning, bird and TV watching.
From great minds, come great laws to keep us all safe!!
Lake Ontario
It's all rather simple! Keep your lures in 50 - 58 degree water all season and you will catch plenty of fish.
You can start the year with running stick baits on the surface, planer boards with offshore releases. 20# line with a 12# fluorocarbon leader.
You will need two rods with 20# line for your rigger rods. You should then set up two rods for dipsy divers, these should be line counter reels with 1000' of 30# 7 strand wire, I would recommend Malin brand.
You sound like you are on the right track for a kicker, just pick a good one, you should be able to find a 2005-2007 15-25hp for about $1k.
Keep it simple .... better to have 2 lines running correctly than 4 lines tangled.
You were the best bird dogger out there.....who am I gonna get to slide into 20' and look for browns or run out to the 33N to find offshore kings??
Saving a salute for you next weekend!
Like champ said if you are lucky you can get a fish or two, but those 9 fish days that we are used to this time of the year and like you are getting in Oswego, just haven't materialized at the oak this month. I am not down playing it...........the bite is off at the oak!
Well as a guy that lives right on the creek.......you should know!
The oak was hot in July and August, but sure dried up just as we thought the kings would be staging.
My guess....they are all east.....Oswego to Mexico is the place to go!!
Lots of hours fished over the last 2 weeks by lots of fishermen, but not many Tar Babies!!
Saturday night was tough, one fish and your a hero, no fish a zero!
Had our first skunk in a very long time... Years......... Shouldn't happen this time of year, but each year there is lock-jaw event like this.
That NE wind changed the water too quickly for the fish to resume feeding activity, quite sure it was a poikilothermic response.
Hey... Great fish!!
In my world:
Derby tickets = small fish
No Derby ticket = big fish
Don't let a contest steal the joy of a lifetime accomplishment!!
Nice report......Good job on Saturday...........I think you may have caught more kings than the bottom half of the field combined!!
The Carbon 14 has been smokin on the 300' .......when it really fires up in the mid morning don't hesitate to drop a pair down on those Cannon out and downs; park one at 55' & 65' ! It's a good way to punish guys for drifting off during a lull!!
