Thanks Les. Actually I ended up saving a ton without sacrificing quality. I just had to take the time to get creative on the steps of who would do what work. It's amazing how good these guys are with this stuff. Don't get me wrong I did some of it like impeller and easy things but to strip a powerhead off in a couple of hours? Yea would of taken me a week with having leftovers lol.

Well she's finally home. After a road trip to Oklahoma that the power head took, a month later she's purring like a kitten. The rebuild service out there found a cracked ring. Replaced everything. Thanks to Larry @ Roys in helping me getting it off and put back on she looks new in a short time. Got to get some ease time on her now.

Dylan, I'll try to look back in some papers from some years ago when I worked with a biologist Daryl J in Region 7. I remember something about something when a group was working on a bear project in the Catskills region back in the 90's. Yea I know a long time ago. Also as Les mentioned the program your in is top notch, Bill, Frank, and Marty were the best.

Great Deer! The best way to know is to get it aged with the lower jaw as I'm sure you know. Lots of tImes if you have it a butcher DEC will stop by and some aging and leave the age on your carcass tag. You can also ask for one of the lower jaws back so you can age it later. It will never change. Pictures are tough and can be misleading to age from what I've seen unless you have points to reference . I've also seen many deer before aging surprise the heck out of me. Based on averages from what I remember, bases measured of the antlers avg 20-30mm for 2 1/2 and 30-40 mm for 3 1/2. Greater than 40mm was always a sight and pushed the 4 1/2 mark. An easy tip to see if it's a 2 1/2 is to reach your finger and rub the back of the last molar. If that cusp is pointy it's a 2 1/2 if it's rounded and dull it's a 3 1/2. Again way to go! Hope it helps.

Les, I'm with you on spinning the motor in the down position without starting for a few seconds when you come out of the water especially during the freezing days. Also would add whe you drop it in the water during winter it's smart to let it sit for a few minutes before you turn her over to defrost it a bit. Chas I hear what your saying about damage to the impeller but you won't hurt it if your quick about it, but I will tell you that you can kiss the impeller goodbye if water freezes on it and you go to start it up the next time. Again this is only for those absolutely crazy guys that fish for those black n yellow nasty tasting fish during those cold wintry days.........mmmmm

It's a rare deal for sure. The likely hood of seeing one in NY is ski to none. I will say though I would suggest not shooting one just because you think NYS doesn't regulate them. They are on the endangered list part 182 nys codes and you might find yourself in a mess. Me personally, would make for an interesting walk to the stand in the dark every morning. Here kitty kitty.......

Man Im not sure about all this "There chasing does and tied up bit" Although there is indeed a lot of time left, and boy do I ever want to connect on a 3 1/2yr old or better this year but I personally feel theres some truth to be had about populations by region could be entirely different from each other. Ive let a ton of 4-6 pntrs (yearlings walk) over the past few days and they sure were not in search mode for does. They were in finding cover mode. Two of them actually bedded next to me by 6:10am in the dark and stayed there for the majority of the morning. The swamp I hunted this past week, didnt seem to have the chasing rutting etc than it did the prior week of Nov 3 - 8th. With that said, if the belief is out there that the rut is in full swing, and that once its over in the next few days or so all of these deer are going to sprout out of the woodwork.......I got to tell ya, I think you have one awesome piece of property to hunt, and I need to find another place to hunt. Personaly in my opinion, unless you have a tremndous amount of unpressured property, deer are in lock down mode whether hes with a doe or not, if she aint movin, he aint movin. If thats what makes them feel safe, then guess what he aint movin unless pressured. But, its like the in the ground, you have to be in it.......
Other factors that I see out there that may influence areas ecpecially mine, freaken corn is still up. Yikes. not good. Nuicence permits?? I hate to hear about these as I think they can crush an area especially if the landowner who applys for them does not allow hunting on his land. Go figure. So yes I think theres some truth to the populations in specific areas being screwed up.
On the topic, though, I think you did the right thing about your grand father and whats already been mentioned cherish it for as long as you can!
lol, I can only imagine being up in a stand 20 ft fumbling that freaken thing around bouncing it of trees and branches.....then saying to your buddy, ooohhhh sorry about that...... he wasnt that big anyways.....lol
Yea but it's cool. I guess it will take some time but yea, can't wait now for second season duck on the lake!

Ray, you forgot something.... Your GoPro camera..... Come on man keep up with the times would ya. Lol. I tell you something funny, tried it tonight, as a yearling buck comes scrambling through the swamp I about all I could do to not drop my bow while turning the damn thing on..... Hopefully I'll have it figured out in the am.

I agree Dan but it just seems this week has been somewhat slower paced than what I'm used to and from what I've been following on this thread was slower this week than last or until my post came out today things picked right up. The big boys are tied up now for sure. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I was a week late with vacation this year. Seems this past week has had not the excitement of chasing etc as the previous week.

X2 the scent conrol, critical. Other suggestion is to have something at the tail and ears. If its dry, you can tack a piece of tissue at each location. I will typically due one ear and the tail. If its rainy ill just do the tail with a white cloth. Makes killer movement when the breeze hits hit. For what ever reason, i have learned the hard way that once they see the decoy, dont call or at least try not too. If hes not coming and you have no other option absouloutly call. But if hes on a string coming in let the decoy do its thing. Decoy placement is not in the line of sight to you on stand to where you think the bruiser would be coming from which most times can be anywhere....... That way hes not picking you out when hes eyeing the decoy.
