Ever shoot one in the rain? They stink, like a wet dog... scent molecules carry better in water vapor. Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The biggest killers off turkeys are opossum, skunks, raccoons, and redtail hawks. The wetter the spring the better those predators can track the hens to their nest, of course the redtails kill the poults. Not sure if this winter wiped out a bunch but there sure are a lot less gobblers out there making noise. last two years have been poor hatches. I agree on reducing the number of turkeys allowed to be taken in the fall but if you want to make a difference in your area kill every skunk, possum and raccoon you can legally. How many nests do you think one possum raids?? If only two bye bye up to 26 turkeys.... Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Congratulations to FLTA with one of their best turnouts with 21 boats fishing this past Sunday. Great bag of fish by Scott B. and Joe S. We squeaked out third with three Lakers. The lake produced quite a few browns and a couple bows. Our six rod set, two riggers one mag dipsy, ten, seven, and five color cores all took multiple fish. We found a small pod of bait early and stuck in that area all day, first fish was 6-5 and came on the mag dipsy with paddle and fly. Our other bigger fish came on a small orange and gold spoon on the five color. We dropped about 8 fish and landed 25, lots of cookie cutter Lakers. The hot spot was just North of the bluff on the West side, if you found the deepest water you found the spot, but we caught 90% of our fish on an east west troll. They did not want it north south. Looking forward to Owasco in June!! Took a friend of my sons with me he's soon to head to the Marines he had a blast! Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Think outside the usual box, look at SLIM state land interactive map find areas where you can listen to large tracts of land and if you can split up a few guys to scout and find birds. Scouting them one day may lead to killing em the next. Spook em and you may say goodbye for the weekend. If you have birds but they are henned up you can go in and bust their roost area in the evening. I have had many mature birds never gobble when they have three or more hens in the same tree with them. They just sit on a big limb and strut, pretty cool to see. good luck, I try to give respect to other hunters and if I see a truck parked I know they probably have heard one there but I give them the spot for the day, but if you can check that spot later... Thanks guys. Gotta say I am blessed with access to some great private land but I love chasing state land birds. I am not a fan of using decoys but if you are hunting " field birds" they are sometimes critical. Whereas hunting " big woods birds" usually setup and calling are keys to killing. I also have been very lucky to have been able to hunt with some of the best turkey hunters in the country. There is a theory that the big woods birds have to work harder to attract hens not just fly out into a field and strut n gobble. I had a chance to hunt with past NWTF CEO and host of TV show Turkeycall, Rob Keck, I learned more from him in about 8 days of hunting than I could in a lifetime. He is an excellent woodsman, caller and overall an incredible gentleman that respected nature deeper than anyone could imagine. He could read a turkey better than anyone I have ever hunted with. Every call had a purpose and every move was orchestrated to perfection. Cadence was by far the most important when calling. BTW he ended up killing two longbeards with me. As we hiked past a group of "two year olds" as he said, he wanted the bird with the drumming in his gobble. His bird ended up having 1" 5/8 spurs, hooks.... I was thinking of Mr. Keck today when I said a little thank you prayer over my bird, thanks Rob. Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I have been after this old Tom for a few years now. State Land in Danby. Scouted him a few times before season. Same tree he was always in so I figured why not give him another try, listen to him gobble for a while fly down and walk away with his harem of hens, like always... This morning started like usual and I was able to use a drainage to slip within 120 yards. First half hour he knew I was there but he didn't want to budge, soft calling with long pauses between produced nothing but his thundering gobbles. So i gave him the silent treatment and the next time he gobbled I cut him off with a long series of cuts. He couldn't stand it and broke his spot and started coming, drumming and spitting the whole way. He got to sixty yards and hung up strutting. He ended up doing the 50 yard end around and a soft purr and cluck made him break that last 10 yards I needed. Ended up having 1 1/4" spurs 22lbs and an old beat up 9 1/2" beard! Seneca Lake downriger/dipsy setup help
Nautitroller replied to jimalbert's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
As for dipsys; black, number one and mag. Run them off a high quality roller rod with a good quality reel (luv my convector) with #30 7 strand stainless line. I use malin but there are other good ones too. I like a 14' lead behind the dipsy with a snubber then your choice of flasher fly combo. ( use what Nick tells you) pay attention to the lengths of your lead between flasher and fly. (Experiment) Then lead core or copper for your flat lines. Hills n valleys in Elmira has it all or they will get it for you. Good luck, we look forward to your reports! Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Seneca Lake downriger/dipsy setup help
Nautitroller replied to jimalbert's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
If I were you I would hire Nick Overacker and take notes on his setups and how he catches fish on Seneca. It would save you tremendously in the learning curve. Lakebound88 on here. reelstoriesfishingcharters.com Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
