  1. Thanks for the input! I always tie trilene knots I think the big issue was running non stretch lighter line. The fish that whacked the dipsies seemed pretty big (ripped out 50ft of line before I even got to the rod, so that may have also been an issue. Headed out tonight to try the new gear out! Hopefully I'll have enough luck to actually test out the new rig
  2. I just started fishing wire rigs with my dipsies and have lost a few fish (and tackle) due to using the same leaders as I was when fishing mono with the dipsies. I was running the wire to dipsy to floro 20# to the SD and 50# for the fly. Ovbiously the floro doesnt stretch, and neither does the wire, so I was kind of shooting myself in the foot. I bought some #30 mono for my leaders as a buddy told me that would help out, but I was wondering about running snubbers with this setup- I guess it cant hurt, right? My real question is what is the breaking strength of these snubbers? I bought a few rip cords yesterday and they look pretty chinsy. It looks like they are just held together by a little piece of melted plastic... I am not sure they would hold up to a 30+ pound fish, but who am I lol. Any information would be appreciated. BTW, I always keep my drags set to the loosest setting possible without it ripping line at trolling speeds.
  3. Yeah my leaders from my Dipsy to SD are a little light (I have been running 17lb floro on my mono rods but obviously the no stretch wire needs something a little different). Time to upgrade before the derby!! [ Post made via iPhone ]

By the time I had all of my rods out it was about 630 and the sun was just starting to poke through- Wire dipsy hit at 130 as I was letting it out, by the time I picked the rod up and tightened the drag, fish was gone. After bringing that in and popping the clip back, the opposite wire went flying (out 200)- broke me off. A few minutes later another wire rod took off at 169' and ended up breaking me off. All of these fish hit in 120 fow. After the frusteration set in, I pulled in my wire rods and only ran 2 riggers with cheaters and 2 planers down 30' as soon as I brought my wire rods in I was going to mess with my rigger depths when the port popped at 65 ft. with the wonderbread sd. We get that in 20# female. stopped marking bait west of the pump house so we turned back where we hit all of the fish and picked up one 6 pound brown on the same lure. We headed in after that as the southern boy couldnt handle the waves anymore I love learning lessons, but not when they cost you $30 dollars in gear. Time to upgrade my leaders for the wire rods
  5. Looking for a decent lake boat for fishing salmon. Anywhere in the 22-25 foot range. Lets see what you got! cash in hand.

Got on the water a little later than usual and set up at 80fow to start getting our planers out. By the time we got to 95 we were dropping riggers and before I even got the ball down to 40 feet it went ripping. Nice steelhead- went jumping all over the place and spit the spoon. After setting the riggers down to 100 and 70 with cheaters, we had a rigger strike with a 10lb king and shortly after that a 14 incher popped the rigger. Fish of the day came off of our planer with a 30ft jet diver off of that with a NK MAG firetiger spoon- 10lb steelie. Overall not a bad night- after all of those hits (7:20-8:00) the screen and the lake turned off so we called it a night. All fish made it back in the water safely- I'm getting sick of holding them over the side of the boat to resuscitate as I spent most of my night doing that. I NEED A BOGA!!
  7. Nice! I'm gonna go try my luck tonight!
  8. Green gator, NBK, frogs, black w. green ladder backs, and white spin docs w. flies have been good to me lately a few miles east out of sandy. Good luck tomorrow!!
  9. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): Time on Water: 5-830 Weather/Temp: beautiful Wind Speed/Direction: calm NE Waves: glass Surface Temp: 75 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 7 Total Boated: 4 Species Breakdown: Kings Steelies Brown Hot Lure: Anything Trolling Speed: 2.5 Down Speed: ? Boat Depth: 100-200 Lure Depth: 30 down ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Started off at around 5pm set up at 80 fow east of the mouth. marked a ton of fish as we headed NW towards the pump station. Fish finder then went blank as we trolled out to 160. after coming back in to 100 FOW with no hits, we made our way back out to 140 when our port side rigger at 100 down went off (wonderbread spin doc w/ a pearl stinger off the back) and ripped line out to 500 ft. As we were bringing in this "hog" (still on a NE troll) we picked up a smaller steelhead off of a mt dew glow cup off of the cheater. As I set the rigger back down to 70- BAM another steelhead picked us out on a NBK. We boated and released both fish as my brother was still reeling in this "Huge" fish. Ten minutes later we had our starboard side dipsy go (280 out on 20# mono line) that had a green/pearl spin doc w. a "freedom fly" on (we named it that as it had red, white, and blue tinsel on it. A minute after fighting the doubles, our port side planer (30ft jet diver off of that w. a fire tiger NK mag spoon) went ripping. Triples! Long story short we ended up loosing both of the steelhead on the port side, and after 40 min of fighting this 14 lb king decided to get in the boat (I know, what a bummer, He must have ate his wheaties this morning!!). Shortly after that we trolled back into the 110 marker where we picked up a decent brown off of a dipsy w. a green/ pearl spin doc out 310 with a Green Gator as a spoon, missed a rigger strike, and after that we called it a night. Overall another good night in the ol' 14 footer! Pics to come shortly
  10. Had to have looked a little funny running 6 rods off of a boat with a 4-ish foot beam! lol we have fun though-Hope to see you out there next time!
  11. the 001 dipsys- I think they are the 50' ones. had them turned to 3.5 for planing.
  12. All fish hit at 155 fow- almost the exact same spot

Boat Depth: 150-160 Lure Depth: 300 out on dipsy on 20# mono- riggers hit around 50-100 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Got out later due to my brothers work schedule- got on the water around 7. Started out at 120 moving NW to 160. Marked a few fish and bait but no hits. Came back east past the mouth and hooked up with a teenage king off the spin doc. Two minutes after releasing the king we marked a fish at 100 and got a jack king off of a rigger w. a mt dew glow cup. After trolling for a few min with no marks we turned back to the same spot as we hit the kings and hooked up with doubles- one smaller brown off of the same spin doc w. the pearl stinger and after a few min of fighting that we got a rip off of a rigger at 50 on a stinger natural born killer. Overall a good night- can't complain 4 fish in an hour and a half in a 14 foot boat.

    New guy

Ill be out later tonight- I need to land a good king!
  15. Hey my name is Nick and I joined LOU to learn some more things about lake fishing. I live in Brockport, so I'm usually going out of the Oak or Sandy. I have been creek fishing for the past 6 plus years and began lake fishing in the fall for kings to load up on skein. I have been going out shallow the past few years for spring browns and fall kings as I have a very small boat, but started testing some deeper waters this spring/summer and have been doing pretty well. I am currently looking for a larger boat and more gear as lake fishing has become a passion of mine. I'm excited to learn some new techniques and get on more fish!
