Finger Lakes Fishing resources
justtracytrolling replied to Sk8man's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I couldnt agree more with Sean. When I started fishing for walleye in the fingers I couldnt find ANY walleye help whatsoever. I eventually learned it myself but I had so many fishless days and bought so much worthless gear and tackle trying to figure how to consistantly catch walleye it was a very expensive way to learn. I decided I would help guys as much as I could here on LOU, and later decided to become a guide. IMO if someone was to do some reading here on this site, buy a few books to read on their quarry, and then took a trip or two with a charter captain or guide the learning curve would be reduced dramatically in a very short period of time. If you ask a question here you get a lot of answers, but not all will pertain to "your" fishing. If you take charter trip on the lake you fish with a local expert you WILL learn things that pertain directly to "your" fishing that you probably would never have tried or figured out. Real first hand experience gained fishing with a local expert is priceless. Plus once you see how its done reread the books and then it will really make sense. Most people these days take classes to learn everything from college courses to self defense to golf....take the same approach to fishing and take lessons from a pro, and Ill bet you will have a great source of info in the future also! Excellent thread Les! justin -

Not bashing you at all....I raised two and learned my lesson! Just kidding really, but its a good thing that youth get involved and are active especially on forums. I find myself debating with my 21 year old on a daily basis and opinions change with maturity not that they necessarily become more valid or inherently logical. To answer your question I actually was a teenager once even though I was born at a very early age. Questioning things is important in life for sure as are many other things such as respect of those that came before you and paved the way for the way of life you enjoy. 2 sides to everything!! justin -
The good news is the walleye fishing is great, and though I dont personally enjoy the tigers much, my guests sure love em! justin

My son went and fished the ponds on our family farm today and caught his biggest bass to date. He didnt have a tape or scale, but we guessed about 7 lbs fish was about 22-23 inches. Caught on a pit boss in a brush pile we made a few years ago. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The goal is to get rid of sawbellies from Conesus lake. Sawbellies tend to favor open water - so do hybrid striped bass. Being that the hybrid striped bass are sterile, they will eventually die...just like the thousands of sterile tiger muskies that are being stocked in that lake annually and have been for the last 20 or so years. In 2012 - how many tigers did the NYSDEC stock? Conesus Lake 12000 Tiger muskellunge 10.5 How many were caught and creeled that year? ?? How long do tigers live and what do they prefer to eat once they get big? Many of those 12000 tigers never reach maturity due to predation. The walleyes, bass, and tigers feed heavily on them and so do gulls and herons. Bass, tigers, and walleyes all suspend and feed on the alewives...if the alewives are gone the walleyes will spawn successfully, but what will the forage be? You wont have those huge walleye without good feed...but im game for stripers or hybrids! Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

running both main motor and kicker off of one battery
justtracytrolling replied to youngknight's topic in This Old Boat
I run sonar, downriggers, stereo, livewells, vhf, ipod, cell phone charger, spotlight, running lights all off 1 battery charged from my 25hp 4 stroke mercury, and I run it at an idle almost exclusively other than a 10 minute run out and a 10 minute run back. I fished several times a week all season and this will be my third year on the battery. I have 2 more batteries for my trolling motor that could be moved in emergency though Ive never had to do it. justin -

Otisco Lake Angler diary results 2013
justtracytrolling replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Walleye
I agree 100 per cent, but the problem i have is that we dont really KNOW exactly how many fish survive and we dont KNOW how many are taken so we really dont KNOW if we are can sustain long term. I can only guess based on what im told, and the quality of the fishing. Based on several long discussions with Ian Blackburn, I feel the lake is in good shape. I specifically asked if I was over harvesting in his opinion and he was very supportive of harvesting and open posting of my results. I will continue to work with the DEC and share my results, and if that means more fish are caught that's my intention. If everyone catches well they will continue to stock more and more as the return on the investment is tangible. Keep in mind i didnt catch that many walleye personally....the 25 people i took out did! The resource is being shared! That means 26 licenses were sold to catch 150 walleye. At least 10 people I took bought their FIRST license to go out with me. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Rigging Swimbaits for Trolling?
justtracytrolling replied to MarkNY's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Use an unweighted swimbait hook. You screw the head of the bait on a corkscrew keeper and run the hood up thru...the bend of the hook keels the bait. They make many sizes weighted and non. justin -

Otisco Lake Angler diary results 2013
justtracytrolling replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Walleye
You cant compare catch rates because there really isnt a fair sampling size...there just isnt enough anglers participating...plus like Brent said the numbers seem arbitrary. My feelings about the fishery are from my 30 years of fishing experience, and I had a 24 inch avg at 5lbs+ plus. How many other states have a walleye lake that produces like that...not counting the great lakes. Come out with me this year Brent and Ill show you how good it is! Dont get me wrong Id like more stocked also, but the lake really is fantastic. As long as the walleye are targeted and caught the state will continue stocking, and if we dont have any more holes in the stocking I think the lake has even more potential. justin -
Otisco Lake Angler diary results 2013
justtracytrolling replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Walleye
All I know is that there is plenty of walleyes to catch and if you work at it the lake gives up plenty. I doubt we will see the stocking go up when there is so many mature fish and catch rates are up already. The lake seems in balance to me...not that that means a thing. I had nights last fall that we could have caught as many as we wanted, but we quit with fish biting and our limits. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
