  1. Chas0218, Thats exactly how i do it, but i run them longer as im deeper than that usually. I also start with shallower dive curves on the outside and finish with tdd 11s on the inside. In addition I add clip weights to get deeper yet if necessary. Braid is a must to get depth and long setbacks make mono difficult to feel weeds as it stretches. 2. Ive been wanting a probe for a while. Not for downspeed, as there isn't much current on Otisco, but for temperature which is far more useful too me. The only fishing I do that downspeed is a major factor is on Cayuga and it also was on Owasco. I fish enough that I can see that current is there in my downrigger cables. Not that that helps me adjust for it much, but I try. Over July fourth last year on Cayuga the only way I could get good laker action was on turns and we realized by watching the downrigger cables what angle was producing and tried to reproduce it. We ended up doing very well on lakers across from Milliken. Owasco the currents were even more noticeable, and we never got the first fish so we just chased our tail. With a probe Id have figured it out. justin
  3. I think pap is referring to downspeed at the ball. If there is a current under the surface, and there often is your gps speed or phone app speed does not factor that. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Rod holders Les! I learned this from my uncle Homer with his stories from the striper surf. His best friend Stuart lost not one but two expensive surfcasting rigs due to inadequately pounded surf spikes. When I use sand spikes mine are 4feet plus and pounded way in...local guy says "you arent from around here" while im pounding away...i say nope i dont have the money you guys do along the coast to throw away my gear! He says how big a fish you plan on catching...i said not sure, but bigger than you are planning apparently! He laughed at least! Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. I couldnt agree more devoknevo! For most guys id say go every chance you get. I was only saying there are times ill fish extra hard, or be more willing to travel longer distances. As far as saltwater goes new and full moons produce much higher high tides and much lower low tides, and this produces certain fishing conditions you will not find at any other time and must be considered when planning a trip for the striper surf. 6. That's about what we see on Otisco. 5 inch baits all summer fast, and long stickbaits in the fall, but we stay in the 18 20 cm range. The stocked tigers are a bit smaller than your muskies. Thanks for the info Captain Larry. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Yes every lure has a max...deep reef runners wont run over say 2.5 or so....and speed dependant trolling techniques like lead core can be tough to precisely control depth at those speeds as charts dont go up above around 2.5...not all releases can take fast speeds either, and if the releases can handle it light line wont take the hit...blow back on riggers becomes an issue too...rod holders need to be stronger also...there are many considerations when you get faster than 2.5 Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Stats are worthless! Its about RINGS. Im not much into celebrating losses or mediocrity. I never said he sucked I said he couldn't close important games. The redskins are a very poor team this year...the broncos on the other hand are a playoff team and the type of team you have to beat to win a super bowl. Since when does QB rating mean anything....I prefer winning...you don't really think Romo is better than Peyton do you? justin
  9. Tigers do in fact eat fine. I release everyone on my boat, but my first 40 last year was in august and I failed to revive it because I didn't work fast enough and didn't have a plan. Ian Blackburn returned my call Friday and the DEC has no problem with the educational signage. Im still waiting for written permission to put them on state owned land , but Ian forwarded my request to the correct people and anticipate an answer this week. justin
  10. Captain Larry, Just wondered how often you picked up walleyes when trolling for muskies? We pick up plenty of Tigers trying for eyes and I wondered if it goes the other way. Also we find tigers in the walleyes, ever look in the muskies and see walleye? Of course you aren't opening them up, but I can usually see if there's anything big in a walleye before I kill em. justin
  11. Tracy is a definite keeper!!!!!! She really loves the outdoors, but mostly I think she loves being with me and supports my passion! Last night we found the limit of that support! LOL She catches big fish because unlike a man she takes direction and stays calm. She almost never drops a fish, in fact I can only think of 1 all season!!! Let that be lesson if your new to walleyes, its not about strength...if you can keep the rod tip up and be smooth on the rod you'll land more fish! The 3 biggest mistakes I see are, pumping the rod, reeling to fast, and kids struggle to keep the rod tip up when the fish is close. justin
  12. Tracy n i gave it a go from 9-11 and had my second zero since june....thought with the wind n rain we'd get into them...im sure if we fished a bit harder we would had some action. Right at the end the wind must have been well over 20 if not 30! We had just a couple fish working but no takers. I was glad tracy was with me, because id still be stubbornly casting if i didnt bring her. I seldom have enough sense to quit! Lol. Hunting tomorrow!! 13. It felt like I casted long enough last night to grow that beard....It actually was good fishing from 2-3, but I had to make a few casts to get from 930pm to 2am! justin
  14. Niice catch! Joe, The moon phase is not a guarantee...just ups your odds...me I prefer the new moon, there's nobody around, cause they cant see! lol justin
  15. I think we just have to concentrate on overcast and windy Tim....or troll...and that's not an option really with the boat pulled... Way to work at it and get in to em justin
  16. I got started about 930pm and I was too late. Moon was up a bit and it was way too bright and flat for walleyes to come in tight to shore in 3-4 fow. Brought my buddt Scotty and he wanted to get a big eye on his 10 6 ultra light noodle and 4 pound mono. After 3.5 hours the wind picked up and clouds rolled in. At that point I knew it'd be another hour before the fish came in. Sure enough 4.5 hours in it starts...we end up landing 2 a 25" and a 26", missing 1, losing 1, and 2 big bass. We earned ours..... 17. I don't think there is right or wrong way and it all too easy to get stuck in a pattern that works or at least used too. Open-minded approaches like Sammy Dog's that allow for adjusting and dialing in based on the that days results probably will produce most consistently. Faster speeds also help cover water. I avoid harnesses if possible because I hate all the trash fish I pick up on them. Sometimes I feel like I cant even get worms down before I pick up panfish. I still get occasional off target catches on cranks but not as many. Plus, it seems cranks produce bigger fish for me on the average. Justin
  18. If anyone thinks walleye fishing is tough take up coyote hunting...walleyes are easy in comparison. Im a 25wssm guy myself, same ballistics and felt recoil in a short action. Ive called em, and ran them with hounds since 92. Probably will do a bit more calling this year as my hound died and cant bear the thought of going with the guys and their dogs without her. Ill get a pup again someday...I call and cody does the shooting. justin
  19. I guess I look at things a little different than most. Nobody has a problem sitting in front of a tv for a 1 hour program, most people watch 2 hour movies, and truth be known most people start watching tv about 6-7pm or maybe 8 at the latest and watch till 11 anyways. Sitting in a car listening to the radio isn't much more difficult than watching tv, assuming your not going more than say 2hours. I leave the house and Im home in 6 hours if im trolling, and if im casting im home in 4 tops. You watch tv im goin fishing...believe me if I could consistently catch big eyes closer I sure would. The real problem with the drive is the cost of gas...everyone has plenty of time to fish...just shut the tv off! justin
  20. Tim, I might buy the tired part or spending time with family, but I know better than to think the rain will keep you away! You fished a 3 hour downpour for gills alone....while I napped all day in a cabin this summer...in fact you didn't quit till I came back out for the evening. LMAO justin
  21. Ditto MTpockets its liable to be on tonight!!!!!!! I might make a late night run. justin
  22. I agree and have been fishing the moon my whole life. I plan ALL my saltwater trips around it. The new moon is just as productive...check out my walleye blitz post date and check the moon phase....I fish harder those 8-10 days per month. justin
  23. Exactly Les, we need contact info for politicians and DEC key people above the region 7 level. The region 7 guys, Dave Lemon, Scott Prindle, and Ian Blackburn, are already working for us and do excellent work. Im not saying we shouldn't include them on the distribution list just that we need email addresses from higher up the food chain. Les start us a new thread on this issue with a headline that will get people involved. We need a call to arms so to speak. I called Ian Blackburn to see if he will help and am waiting for him to return my call. This issue should be our top priority this winter. justin
  24. So lets do something about this! If all of the guys in just the finger lakes section start writing emails and lobbying for SOME action maybe things will get better. Im not very knowledgable about this situation, but Ill send emails. Im not much of a trout fisherman, but I am a finger lakes guy. If one or more of you put together a list of email addresses of the right DEC people and or politicians, and come up with the basic context of the email in a non argumentative format, its pretty simple for each of us to send roughly the same email to the same distribution list. Then its just a matter of all of us getting other members to do their part. We have 13000 members on this site and every member has friends that are capable of sending 1 email once a week till they do something. Complaining wont get it done. Joining together we can make a difference. justin
  25. great job tim! The last game on trip I had was 20 mph winds.....you were right just goota get a weather change for that spot. Plus a little break never hurts a spot! justin
