  1. Usually I don't start fast trolling until summer after the lake flips. I relate speed to water temp...as the water temps rise so do my trolling speeds. The hardest part is you really have to be able to precisely control your depth. The closer you can get the bait to the fish the better your chance of hooking up. Its best suited running 6-9 rods. The hits can be crazy, but you need fairly heavy tackle and rugged rod holders to do this at Otisco because the Tigers love speed also. Combine this technique at daybreak and if you manage to get all the rods out without a release don't bother sitting down it wont be long! This works very well on otisco and even better at Oneida. Should be noted that you have to slow down as soon as the fish is pumping or you will pull a lot of hooks. You also need baits that troll fast without washing out. The thing that can really hamper you is floating weeds. At fast speeds you cover so much water you pick up a lot more weeds. I use clip weights just under the surface of the water to collect weeds and or down rods and riggers to overcome this, but if you hit much grass with the otters you have to start over. Ask Tim about that...we try to run all the lines in and back out like a NASCAR pit crew! In tough times we do one side then the other over and over till we get tired and then drop back on the rods. Im not saying its easy but its cant miss for me I was 100% success for 6 straight weeks and had only 2 zeros from july to September and had weeds and lost fish on both occaisions I think. justin
  2. I had decent luck with harnesses last year also and went away from them early this year. Even last year tho using harnesses was never a guarantee and often took me time to find fish. Ive always wanted to guide, and because of that i had to find a way to catch them that worked everyday and in 2 hours or less. I figured if you can put a big walleye in the first hour or so that will keep most peoples attention. The reaction bite is a guarantee if used when the light is changing (morning or evening). The walleyes natural predatory instincts take over Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. If there is enough depth and snags arent an issue crankbaits will take more big fish than a jig imo and you can cover a ton of water! Of course im biased as i love to troll. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. The trick once you have some gulp is too marinade your twisters in the gulp juice with the gulp. Curl tails are cheaper. You can buy just the gulp concentrate. Brandon Palinuk used this to win on lake O on smb. We have been doing this for eyes in the river for 3 seasons, and in the surf for fluke for a decade or close. The juice really helps draw em in, but what it really does is makes the walleye hold the jig longer for easy hook sets. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. I had a nice eye break me off 2 sundays ago and 30 min later my son Cody landed the pig laughing his tail off. Funny how fish can be so aggressive and so finicky too. Maybe tomorrow afternoon we can do it up right from 1 of the toons! I need a break from spot 1 and it needs a break from me! Its just so limited from shore. 6. 2.5 to 3 inch gulp emerald shiner on jig is my favorite other than maybe a nightwalker. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Im more of a 1 oclock guy....been there done that...im a 1-2 oclock caster too...been there done that also...im a pliers in the net guy too...you guessed it been there done that more than once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing worse than being hooked with the lure still in the flopping fish still in the net, especially if its a big tiger you don't wanna kill or harm. justin
  8. 20 inches is solid anywhere...nice fish! justin
  9. On some lakes its so tough for a given species that its really a "locals" lake because unless you are on the lake 4 days a week its pure poke and hope. In most cases I believe 10 % of fisherman catch 90% of the fish, and on a tough lake for a tough to catch fish like walleye or a tough to find fish like jumbo perch its more like 5% of fisherman catch 95% of the fish. I will say if you can learn a hard lake it gives you the confidence to catch fish anywhere. justin
  10. Well it was slow out there tonight unless you want largemouth bass. We got 2 little eyes 20 n 22 and threw back a bass that belongs on somebodys wall along with a couple solid 4-5 pounders. Had a few misses and lost 1 decent eye. Ronald, Didnt know you were a seasonal camper at Otisco. Did we meet im horrible with names? Id be more than happy to take you out trolling, and show you how i do it. Ill warn you though you'll be busy... my boat doesnt do relaxation...we fish! I post alot obviously, and really enjoy it. I'm also a bit more into it than most, but I cant stress enough to post every trip out. Even if you get skunked we know what didnt work and it opens TWO WAY sharing of info. If i know someone is really trying and cant catch ill help more. Its hard to "give out" every detail that goes into catching walleye...fish should be earned as it makes them taste better! There are plenty of people that are members of this forum that ask questions and want help but never post about their trips. I can only assume everybody on here fishes some yet no posts. I wanna learn too, even if its what not to try. I find if you want something you better be willing to give it too. If you see Tracy n I at the campground stop by n shoot the breeze. Anyone who's ever met me knows ill talk hunting and fishing, especially around a campfire with a beer. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Its a very complicated balance and I hear and sometimes say negative things about the DEC, but what they have accomplished at Otisco is truly a remarkable success. Lets not forget the huge tiger muskies, or the 25 pound 5 fish bags of bass that won a few tournaments. Maybe they just got lucky, but I think its quality management and my hats off to the individuals responsible. I will say its not an easy place to catch a fish, but when you learn to they are big. 12. Yeah i have a chart somewhere i printed out and that sounds right. I know the ones im targeting are 9+ years old and next year should give up some 10 pounders....last year the biggest common size was 26 or so this year there is even more at 25-26 and some 27-28. I have put enough time in and keep track of what i get and im saying that the lake is outstanding. Justin Sent from my N9500 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. I believe and don't quote me but Ian said the fingerlings are doing very well and growing fast...The cloudy, murky pond side does offer excellent cover for walleye fingerlings Justin
  14. I believed the biologist you talked to in passing after you told me, but all the research I had done had said the opposite. I think Ian is sharp and I liked what I heard. Im not a hear say guy either. I want facts, pictures, and proof...now we know! justin
  15. Exactly...fishermen working together with DEC. If I came off defensive it was only because my intentions are good, I follow the rules, work hard at my fishing, try to help others, and thought I was doing the right thing. justin
  16. Thanks Brent!!! Tim and I were paraphrasing and I was gonna get an email out but you saved me the effort. I am pleased that we as sportsman took the time to find out if we needed to worry about releasing "breeders" or if its put and take. Opinions vary of course but I did a lot of research and was quite sure that keeping my legal limits wouldn't hurt future generations...now im certain that if we let the fish mature before we harvest we cant go wrong as long as the lake is stocked. Im putting the fish under 23 or so back. justin
  17. I prefer the boat to shore of course, but either works. I troll all summer then in fall and spring I cast if I can find them. Sk8man put it best in a thread on jumbo Seneca perch; The secret is fish every available day as long as you can for years studying the behavior of the fish perfecting your technique and do your homework. There is less than 20 miles of shoreline to fish and with 2 guys and a trolling motor in a handful of trips you can cover the whole lake. Thats how we do it, except the work is done. Pick a 2-3 mile stretch of shore and work it for 4-5 hours. Keep doing this till you figure a few spots out. Poke and hope is not a scientific approach. After 1000 hours of trolling on the lake you learn a lot. Without a boat and some gear you are severely limited. Keep after it keep posting and keep asking questions....other than where are you fishing...there are tons of fish all over the lake according to the research team. I did ask if there were any areas that were noticeably better or bigger fish and was told they found the fish everywhere they looked. I throw just ONE bait so you don't have to wonder if you are using the right stickbait. justin
  18. Winds were over 20 and the eyes were hot early at least...Tim will have to tell you about later as I was home before 12. Not sure how far I was casting but the retrieves took forever with the tail wind and light braid! Lol justin
  19. Brent, I didn't think we were overharvesting, but after my/our conversation with Ian and his partner Im quite confident that the lake is mostly put and take which in my opinion means let em mature then harvest. In Otisco we don't have to worry about heavy metals in older fish, and as far as strong tasting when they get big its hogwash....these fish are excellent. Furthermore the size I hear people prefer to eat I simply cant find hardly any that small <22-23. Justin
  20. Les, SPOT ON! That is THE secret...hard work, patience, and experience. You have to want it bad! I still believe in sharing of course, but results vary! Justin Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. Tracy and I were in the middle of a banner night of walleye fishing casting f18 rapalas, when she hooks up and the drag starts singing. Immediatly I knew it was a big something, but it was dark. When I netted it I said lets get a pic with you holding the fish this time, and she said "that little thing...put it back" I gave it a quick tape...38 inches...and released the fish safely. Guess she's spoiled...I thought it was fine fish on spin tackle in the dark! Here's her with her best eye ever...sorry its not the tiger! 22. Hit the submit button...a 27 a 26 and a 25.5. It took Tracy a bit longer as she was missing, but once she got warmed up she was on fire. She caught a personal best 28 with a 15.5 inch girth weighing 9.5 pounds. She filled out her limit with a 24 a 23 and threw back a 22. She got 1 largemouth and a 38 inch tiger. All fish were caught on a rapala f18 in black and silver (shad) using a slow steady retrieve after quickly cranking it down. Justin Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. Tracy and I decided to head home early from deer camp and go walleye fishing. I got 3 nice eyes...a 27 a 26 Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Must have been a sight. You crack me up pap! Justin Sent from my SPH-L710 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Great pics and great report. Congrats on the personal best that's a heck of a fish, and on a figure 8 too....must have been surreal!! justin
