  1. I wish I could say I am exhausted from all the fish I caught, but it was tough opener for me. Friday night we fished from 12 till Dawn and never even saw an eye. Saturday we casted for tigers in the middle of the day and didn't see a single tiger. Saturday evening I decided to load some trolling rods and work some deeper water. I ended up missing a couple fish and landing 2 tigers. Sunday I put the riggers on and ran a full spread hoping to figure something out. I ended up losing several fish that I'm fairly certain were walleye before we could even get the board off or in some cases out of the rod holders. We finally landed the my first 2 eyes of the season when I bumped our speed hoping to get them to hit better. Along with the 2 eyes we caught 2 more tigers. None of the fish were noteworthy but it's a start. The bigger eye, 6lbs, and the biggest tiger, upper 30's both came on a spoon off a rigger 30 down on steep structure occasionally banging bottom...tough trolling! I was hoping for eyes ON shore at night for casting sticks, then I hoped for eyes suspended, or eyes on a sand flat, but if it was easy they would call it bass fishing! I definitely felt I was getting things figured out.
  2. I got a good supply of them from cny tackle here on the forum. Bet he can get more. I'm gonna run them this evening. 50-52 degrees today here, but last night I had 47-49 and the eyes weren't in shallow. Won't be long... Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Just wondering if anyone has seen the new Rapala deep taildancer 13s yet? Dives to 40 and they look like a serious big walleye bait! Many yrs my biggest trolling eyes come on the 11s so...one can only hope! Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Otisco casting sticks all night long! Probably find a fishy or 2.... switch to tigers at daylight for a bit and sleep all day. Hopefully weather isn't too awful.... Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. They may be able to "breathe" out of water, but any pike/musky/tiger you are intending to release shouldn't be "worked on", as in removing hooks, out of water like you would a bass. These fish are definitely much more fragile especially in summer where oftentimes they shouldn't even be removed from water at all. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. My experience says they see quite well with their eyes out of water. Half the battle of catching them when they swim on top is not being seen whipping a rod at them, and not being perceived as chasing them. Often if you don't pressure them too much and are patient shortly after they go back down you will hook up in the area... especially if there are several around swimming on top. Once you really spook them it becomes very difficult. Huge baits landing in their faces isn't the play. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Perhaps porpoising isn't the best term, but we are definitely referring to the same behavior. I've seen them keep their entire head out of water for an extended period of time.
  8. They will bite...the fish absolutely exploded on a lucky craft gunfish. Ive caught quite a few after spotting them. This particular morning 5-6 solid tigers we're porpoising behind us and after getting us in range at the right angle young Maddux made a perfect cast!
  9. The g2 solix is the new model. Check on Humminbirds web site...any mega + unit will be 200 on the di
  10. X2 on what is the target species.
  11. A solix gen 2 is the same imaging as a gen 3 helix and the di goes to 200 not 125. The only difference between the 2 is the touch screen.
  12. We are on Otisco (near Syracuse) and for reputable work at a price any bit fair driving an hour or 2 isn't a big deal.
  13. I am looking for a place to get a bass boat transom rebuilt. We did one ourselves and it went well but just don't have the time now.
  14. I love my helixes! Have them on both boats and as soon as my new g3 12s get here I'll have a 9 and a 12 for sale. Mine have high hours on them but I've never had any problems with my birds. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. My experience is mostly warm water species, but when Im trolling crystal clear shallow water I use boards and stay off the fish. I don't expect to mark target fish in much less than 20 fow in those conditions with traditional sonar. I "look" for fish with side imaging in this situation. Side imaging works great even for seeing individual fish glued to the bottom as long as there isn't structure/large rocks for them to hide in. Several times I've located good schools of walleye on sand flats in 15 or so fow and worked these fish from deep to shallow without getting over them till I figured out what they wanted. As I mentioned before having a transducer on the bow puts half of your cone out in front of the boat instead of half of your cone behind you. If you have dual frequency sonar in a split screen you can see how most fish don't let you drive straight over them in shallow or high in the column scenarios. The narrow 20° cone is a blank and the 60° cone will show fish. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. If you run 2 graphs and have a second transducer on a trolling motor you mark a lot more fish up in the column on the front graph. The fish that don't move off to one side or the other as you go over them will often go down a bit in the column. This is very common with walleye up high in open water. Even when I'm running all electric on my tm walleye and I'm sure other species are boat shy when up high. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. I certainly don't want individuals stocking public water for any reason. That being said walleye didn't hurt a thing on a owasco as Kevin stated. The proof is the lake is still has a very fishable population of walleye yet the trout fishing is solid. The trout are the invasive species here and the walleye belong here. Furthermore, walleye are at least a challenge and worthwhile to eat! I hope they flourish and could care less about the trout as we have plenty of trout lakes. The DEC has everyone convinced the trout and walleye can't coexist but they do fine together. Walleye can and do reproduce well in the finger lakes. Walleye fishermen don't politic for elimination of other species if our fishing drops off...we just work a little harder....trout fishermen aren't happy unless they have enough to throw them away after each derby and box tournament...so sad.
  18. It's not that I feel any different than you...trust me!!! But I know we are not the majority on many of the issues we hold so dear! Just because we were raised one way in one environment and others were raised differently in a different environment doesn't make either right or wrong no matter how loud we shout our opinion...our system is and has always been compromise and therefore we just can't ignore how we are viewed because we don't see a problem with our way of life. Nobody is really going to change their minds on either side... Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Recoil is a huge factor if you intend to practice much or want to see the bullet impact. Nearly everyone is affected sub consciously by anticipated recoil. You may not feel the recoil shooting at game, but your mind knows what is coming! Practicing with good ear protection helps fight this, but recoil affects shooting ablility. Does this matter much unless you are shooting at longer ranges...not in most cases on deer sized game and up. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Even if you want to shoot well beyond 300 you have to play the trajectory no matter what caliber you use. No rifle is on at more than 2 specific distances...one on the way up and another on the way down. Speed/flat are not a reason to select a caliber. 21. I certainly don't fish the rivers hard anymore like Kevin, but if I know the water is up, not chocolate milk , there is front coming in or a full moon, and temps are at least near freezing so eyes don't freeze every cast I'm miserable if I don't go!!! For my personal fishing, which I don't get much anymore because I'm guiding, I don't stay up all night anymore unless it's right. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. I use braid because it is versatile and on Otisco we have tigers so no matter what im fishing for I'm using tackle im confident will land a big tiger quickly enough to be able to release it. If I were just fishing eyes I'd run mono in open water...for sure! Off downriggers the set backs are short so I don't mind fighting tigers on mono. I do run braid on dipsies when I fish Cayuga and I don't have a problem, but im used to running my lines non stop and I don't let the fleas build up. Seaguar blue label or premier flourocarbon leader handles teeth fine. I can't remember the last time I broke off a tiger...it's been years.
  23. If you enjoy recoil, hydrostatic shock, and blood clots through your entire deer I'd go with a 30-06 or 300 win mag or wsm. If you just want the deer dead, less waste and less recoil I'd go 25-06, 257, 25wssm, or 243. 270 is a nice happy medium but still overkill. I've shot many deer with many different calibers and it is good shots that produce quick ethical kills not specific calibers! All of these calibers chambered in a decent firearm with decent glass will work just fine. It really is personal preference. Don't get caught up in how flat shooting a caliber is either because you have to play the drop at distance no matter what the caliber. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Seaguar 20 kanzen braid on my boards...thinnest braid on the market. (Less than 4 lb diameter doesn't gain you a thing in dive curve) Seaguar senshi 15 lb mono on the riggers. Seaguar premier 12 for leader on the riggers, seaguar premier 15 for leader on the boards. Braid is very unforgiving for landing walleye, especially with big boards. Stay away from "slick" braids for trolling it just isn't as durable. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
