We used to video treed and bayed critters, especially bear and they definitely didn't want the average person to see those videos. They were right too because we did end up losing our bear dog season and it's still not legal to hunt bears with dogs. So maybe if we really love our heritage we should care how we are viewed...even by liberal whiners.

I agree, but the houndsmen that taught me so much almost 30 years ago were quick to point out that many aspects of fur taking would not necessarily be socially acceptable to much of mainstream society reaching well beyond just liberals. It was the opinions of these old timers that we keep things to ourselves so as not to chance our way of life. Basically anything beyond killing for food they felt was at risk. For example, fur taking, selling fur, population control, etc all slippery slopes.

Lake trout are far more opportunistic than we often realize. A buddy of mine was out with other guys fishing bass on cayuga in Union springs. Bite died off and they all quit and we're just having a beer. They drifted along and 1 guy had a top water frog on and left it hanging over the gunwale in the water. A big laker came up God knows how far and nailed it. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I would keep any future possible extraction operations private. There are techniques, but not the kinda thing the average person would want to do though you would enjoy watching it...and not legal as far as I know...when New York state had a bounty on coyotes houndsmen never left them if the dogs holed them. Piece of old barbed wire is all you need. Real problem is when the dog goes down the hole after it!

I was told by the region 7 crew that angler diary data was NOT used for fishery management decisions and that it was for providing other anglers with catch rates and catch info for the purpose of promoting our fisheries. Once I was told that I stopped doing a diary. Didn't seem my efforts were worth it. Perhaps this isn't the case now or perhaps they do things differently on other bodies of water. I've have a few customers with various handicaps from being in a wheelchair to being deaf and mute and it takes planning, patience, and a lot of hard work to provide a safe successful trip. I find it very rewarding, but I feel it takes a certain type of person and shouldnt be entered into lightly as it's far more difficult than you think. It was an eye opening experience taking Captain Vince and his brother archery hunting. I had no idea how hard it would be and Vince had been doing this alone for years. My recommendation would be to try it on a very small scale and really listen to the needs of each handicapped individual because each person will have different challenges and needs. As far as insurance and liability issues go that's not a problem if you have charter insurance. Without it you probably don't have proper coverage from the time they leave their vehicle until they return to it. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

A couple solid fish to end the year on

Finally got a warm night so I could fish without dealing with freezing eyes every cast. Fishing was a little slow but we managed to land 7, drop 3 and miss a couple. We each kept just one. Highlight of the night for me was seeing lots of yoy fish in the rocks along shore. My buddy Scotty lost a real big girl probably around 11-12 lbs which on the bright side saved him on some taxidermy...sorry Kev! Lol. River seems very healthy even though numbers seemed down this year with lots of spawning classes represented especially yoy. Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

New Bill introduced in ny assembly
justtracytrolling replied to zern's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Back to the introduced bill....the takeaway here should be that we as sportsman can do a better job promoting our way of life. We give the antis so much of the ammo that they use against us. This is certainly not about party lines this about how non sportsmen view what we do. Lucky and bsmaster are spot on! Ive competed in these events and won a few predator hunts and KNOW first hand how these hunts bring out the worst in us. Do I think we need a law making them illegal? Absolutely not, but we shouldn't kid ourselves and think new laws are formed by public opinion and A LOT of what we do doesn't have good optics. Planner Board Tow Eye Placement
justtracytrolling replied to horsehunter's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The fore and aft placement will affect how hard they pull and how far out they run. On my old homemade boards it took a few tries to get them to run right. Are you using them on tigers and musky? If so the high speed is a problem if you have them pulling too hard. I made custom angled keels for my otters and they will cut right thru weed mats and work very well at high speed. New Bill introduced in ny assembly
justtracytrolling replied to zern's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I read this as wildlife not fish. I can see their point quite easily, though I don't agree with it. Anytime we kill fish or wildlife for money I do think it's a slippery slope. Fishing tournaments are easily run without killing the fish anyway. Bass fishing is HUGE money and they are penalized for dead fish. Times change, public opinion changes, and we as sportsman are often our own worst enemies. -
All it takes is one to make us all look bad!
justtracytrolling replied to Sk8man's topic in Ice fishing
Education is the only answer...it's very difficult to get the slobs to change, but getting kids out there and teaching them the right way is much easier and doable. It is our responsibility to teach the next generation of fishermen and women. Go out of your way to take a kid fishing and not just your own kids. Make a point to spend far more time teaching lessons of being a responsible sportsman than teaching them how to catch a fish. It's really not about success rates...problem is the Bill Saifs of the world teach the outdoors a little differently! Sent from my E6810 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

All it takes is one to make us all look bad!
justtracytrolling replied to Sk8man's topic in Ice fishing
I gave up shore fishing because I can't stand what I see without getting upset and I got sick of being furious at the slobs that make up a good percentage of shore anglers. Between snaggers, cast nets, garbage, no respect for the fish, and total disregard for the law shore fishing is no fun anymore unless it's the middle of the night when I don't see the mess and I don't see the slobs. Sad but true.... -
