A good map on ur GPS is a wonderful tool, but sonar and side imaging tell the story if you can read it. You don't even need a rod in the water till you find what you are looking for....the first time you find a nice school of big eyes on a relatively shallow sand flat from 100 feet away and work them for days without ever getting over them you won't ever want to fish without side imaging again. All too often in shallower water big active fish will shut right down if you get in on them. It does take a 10-12 inch screen to really identify individual walleye on si.

I can't think of many techniques that don't work on Oneida....but without sonar I'd find a GPS and map app on my phone. Take a 1/2 day charter your first day and you will be way ahead of the game.

My boys have a bass nation event there every year and do well fishing the above mentioned dam. That stretch is definitely a productive section of the st Lawrence.

Nice job as always! I knew you've been on em. You and I and Bruce will have to get out this spring....and I might have to get a jig rod out this evening!!

I've not read anything suggesting fish, and more importantly walleye from otisco have any pollutants. The water is tested several times a day and there is nothing upstream except cows. I guess if owasco has it from the rain then we probably due too, but if our rain is that polluted we are screwed no matter what we eat.

On my boat these overused phrases are usually questions from customers. 1. How big do they have to be to keep? 2 What if I get a really big one can I keep it then? 3. What if it's a state record then can I keep it? 4. How big do you think that one was? Answers 36 but it doesn't matter because we aren't keeping one No No but I'll measure it! About....

It would be great if everyone HAD to take boater safety...and not just once!!! -
My winter fishing fix on the lower Niagra with Captain Vince Pierleoni ended up my first spring brown trip. Captain Vince asked if I was interested in trying what he felt was excellent february opportunity for browns out of Olcott and I was all in. As it turned out he was spot on! He had us on fish immediately and all morning. In the end Matt and I had a spectacular day going 15/16 with a few real nice fish. I can't say enough how easy and enjoyable Captain Vince made our trip.

I don't have any experience with a boat the size of yours but 24 v wasn't adequate for trolling on my 21', but the 36v I have now will no problem. You don't get 2 seasons out of the batteries though if you fish alot. IMO the gas kicker is the play if you are a troller. If you are multi species or do alot of casting then the trolling motor is the answer.

I have a couple musky reels that are set up with it and it works well. I think it's ideal for anglers that cast and troll in the same trip and don't have room or budget for 2 sets of rods. Metered braid is definitely more accurate and more reproducible across a spread.

If you do any fishing on water that really isn't well mapped make sure you pick a unit that can create an accurate map. I love my helix units and feel they are the best value imo.

The best thing about Oneida lake is it's loaded with walleye and they aren't very difficult to catch any one of a number of ways. My advice to you is to figure out how you want to catch them and find a captain to show you some techniques that fit your goals. A good charter will shorten your learning curve. Personally I am of the opinion that learning to troll walleye is most important because it's the best technique during the heat of the summer when many guys struggle and trolling doesn't require much local knowledge. As far as the kicker vs trolling motor question goes if you are a troller and only a troller a kicker is the play....if you plan to jig/cast/drift a trolling motor is the play...if you do both a really big trolling motor is the play. I do just about every kind of walleye fishing there is and I would go with a 36v trolling motor. I'd take a charter trip before you buy a bunch of stuff you don't need. If you are interested in bigger walleye without big water and are up to the challenge give me a call on otisco.

Trevor, Let me know if there is anything you need from me. If you guys do a video to demonstrate proper handling ill provide a high def camera man/editor and a boat to shoot it on. -
Sadly enough the diaries arent used at all for management purposes...just catch rates to publish. No decisions are made with the info and once I was told they cant manage a fishery using our data i never filled out another trip log for the dec. I hope somehow things turn around but by all accounts every species in the fishery seems to be stuggling except the bait.

Walleye fishing in the province of Quebec
justtracytrolling replied to Andre wallyandre's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I have a several regular customers that took trips to canada for over a decade and they all say the same thing...why drive so far, spend double, and oh by the way you cant bring back the fish! The numbers are there for sure, but my customers want filets for the freezer and that isnt an option in canada. The fish are willing for sure and easy, but the thing that makes walleye fishing great is how tough it is....if i wanted it to be easy id bass fish. That being said im ready Landshark!! -

Ive had terrible issues like this in recent years. My lease is up against a great farm that I also hunt with permission, but the farmer didnt monitor his property so everyone hunted it. Of course many ended wandering over to my side screwing up much of what I can hunt. Finally one these "hunters" made the mistake of harassing the farmer. This year he has put up locked gates and made it clear to all but a couple they arent welcome. The few that have permission other than us dont have gate keys. Not surprisingly we had the best season in a long while shooting 2 good bucks and layed on eyes on THE buck. Opening day we all passed bucks and 2 hunters passed 6. I saw a rut this year like one ive never seen my entire life. This is the first time i didnt have people constantly pressuring and felt like i didnt have to be there all the time patrolling the line. It feels good knowing I can give the place a break till the late season and have a chance deer to hunt in daylight. We should have tougher laws pertaining to tresspassing on private land. We put so much time and effort into having the type of hunting we want only to have some slob screw it up. I dont care what kind of buck you put your tag on but take the time to set up a place to hunt where you have permission and STAY there...or go hunt state land!!!

We have 5 12s and a 9 across three boats and I couldnt be happier. The side imaging and auto chart were game changers for me trolling, though im in 70 fow or less. The standard mega imaging transducer is excellent. I cant imagine not being happy with the new helix 12...i absolutely didnt want a touch screen though.
