Best trolling motor battery
justtracytrolling replied to Yankmycrank's topic in Tackle and Techniques
What you need is more amp hours. There are two options. First is to wire two batteries in parallel and the second is to buy a real high amp hour battery. Trojan makes some that are 200 amp hour, which where you would be with 2 everstart size 29s. The optimas and agm batteries are designed for many more recharges and less drop off in performance, but they don't have the amp hours of a wet cell like an everstart or interstate 29. A DC on board charger is also a good idea if you run your regular motor much throughout your time on the water as it will charge your batteries every time you are running the regular motor. I have a 36 volt system with ac and dc on board chargers and 2 batteries in parallel for my main battery. I can troll all night with lights on, 2 graphs, live well, etc all without the 4 stroke. -
Kevin, if there is one thing I know for sure that's you guys are flexible enough to have a tough fishery dialed in! I don't think the average angler realizes how much you have to be able to adapt to stay on walleye year to year through the season.
-
Tell Kevin it's the driver who catches the fish!! The spot I'm fishing I haven't done a thing since 2013 according to my logs. First tiger of the year today for me, but took a fat zero on eyes. After fishing till midnight we weren't at our best at 5am. Back at tonight....it's bedtime!!!!
-
Nice work guys!! You guys make it seem so easy...like going to the fish market! Had to fish morning and night but managed a couple limits today here. I'm not on em as good as I should be, but when are we!

Walleyes are biting along smb, but no tiger action to speak of....I fished hard Sunday for tigers and had one good follow. I've been out since before dawn for eyes today and haven't seen one or had any tiger rips. Screen is definitely looking better and I've marked a couple suspending finally.
-
Magdas and other cheap reels will work for you if you back off the drag a touch and are patient fighting fish. I agree with chas and I like a good drag, but you can make it work with less...the sealines have very nice drags stock, but they aren't super cheap.

The classic pro downrigger rods are the cheapest I know of and I used the the last 5 seasons on walleye and tigers and never had a problem. How many combos do you want? Im getting a new set before my trolling season takes off and I could probably sell off a few. I use Seaguar Senshi for mono and Seaguar kanzen braid and Seaguar premier for leader, but honestly it doesn't take much for walleye. As mentioned above your salmon gear will be fine if you leader accordingly and perhaps throw on a 100 feet on mono or braid. That will get you started

Viewing fish on side imaging
justtracytrolling replied to Yankmycrank's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Also we have 6 of these helix units and 3 of them are transom mount and 3 are trolling motor mounts and all work equally well. 1 of the units did have a bad transducer from the start but it was replaced for free. -
Viewing fish on side imaging

I fished with a 798 si unit for years and with small screens it's really only useful for following or finding structure. I have the 12 inch helix mega imaging unit and the detail is incredible, but so is the price. My 9 inch helix only has downscan but the detail seems pretty good to me. Esox only on here has the 10 and loves his. These units are just tools....it's up to you to be able to read and use them. One side note is if you plan to mark structure waypoints using your si you need the GPS puck if you want them to be any bit accurate. If you only make waypoints "under the boat" it isn't needed. -
At about 55-57 bait will start showing subsurface on shore...by 60 it's just starting to roll if you are in the right area. Right now you want the warmest water you can find. I think covering water looking for the most active fish is the best play for most anglers. Working slowly is fine if you know your in the right area and you know your presentation is spot on, but too often we bang our heads against a wall trying to catch fish that aren't active. When you find active fish they are hard to keep off.

Just to clarify the fish need to be alive to bleed them. How many of you guys filet your walleye without opening up the guts? I filet them without cutting through the ribs going around them so I keep the filets spotless and leave the digestive system untouched during fileting.
-
I've heard from many they didn't eyes on an alewife diet, but as Kevin said you trim the filets and remove the lateral line and they are awesome. I do think water quality is definitely another concern and that's one of the reasons I'm on Otisco. Bleeding the fish while still alive helps as well especially with smallmouths.
-
Finding eyes is often the easy part. Like mentioned above focus on changing light periods as that is when you have the best chance...sunrise, sunset, moon rise, and moonset. Weather trump's everything and nothing is more finicky than walleye so don't beat yourself up too much. Last weekend wasn't ideal for most areas.

I heard many reports that sounded similar. I was at Otisco from Wednesday till Sunday night and talked with tons of bass fishermen and only 1 boat in 10 even saw a tiger and didn't hear of 1 bass guy hooking one and heard of just a couple landed all weekend. Walleye weren't any easier. I fished both nights till dawn managing just 5 walleye and that wind kicked my butt! Spent quite a few hours scouting at night and didn't see one tiger which is rare. The cold front didn't do us any favors either. We caught lots of big smallmouths... Couple warm days and no more rain would be a start.
