17hmr is fine for yotes if you are using dogs or if you like tracking coyotes...centerfire rifle otherwise. I know several coyote hunters using 17 wsm and 17 rem with great results.
I was....I think I told you and Nautitroller a couple years ago id take you and it was late in season and it never happened. Ill be sure to pm you when i figure out when we are gonna go...my son has been talking about it daily. Im committed to taking Tracy up north to snowmobile either this weekend or next. So many options...summer is easy...just go to the lake!
Any chance he released it? Not near trophy size to mount and seems like a faster growing fish for table fare, though there are a few people that love to eat em, and carp make better fertilizer, not that it planting time! lol!
Full moons and new moons are times i fish harder as i know that there is definitely something to it based on 5 yrs of angler diaries, but if mother nature doesnt cooperate with favorable winds and fronts none of it matters...and when it comes to tidal water the tides are everything and full/new moons produce much higher and lower tides creating excellent shore fishing opportunities.
Bondouley/jeff you should come do it with dogs.....i havent even gone yet myself, but will be soon. I just got deer camp closed 10 days ago and have been too busy with work. Snow down here hasnt been good for anything except tearing up the dogs feet with the little we've had, not that im complaining!!!! I just finished my outdoor work last week.
If all things were equal i think we would see more correlation....but weather/pressure trumps everything. If you have to plan way in advance to fish then its all you got.
We did a week long points contest that included fox and coon and all legal means were fair game. We ran traps, hounds, and called....it was grueling, my son would fall asleep in the jeep at every opportunity! We had good bunch of yotes strapped on the jeep one year and had to make record time 2 hrs to a weigh in that was nerve racking...good times!
Here is a pic of us after a hunt...my son was pretty young...it was a good weekend...the other guys are still competing in some bigger hunts. Good luck
I remember those days of saving certain spots for the shoe in hunt and a few others. I got sick of the lie detector tests, the whiners, racing to weigh ins etc, but I LOVED how hard we hunted all weekend or week depending on the hunt.
Bird distress calls work well, and just because its daylight doesnt mean you wont get yotes, fox, or ANY other predator. Ive called in and killed more coyotes in daylight than in the dark.
The bolt is the savage model 93r17
The semi is the new model a17
The nef single was half the money and shoots just as well...and we have killed more yotes with it
The more you kill the more coyotes you have! The ultimate critter to hunt n chase. They can live anywhere, eat anything, breed with other canines to ensure survival, and have a ghost like ability to vanish....
We have 3 of em...heavy barreled single shot...heavy bolt action...and the new semi auto...all work well. Unless im running coyotes with hounds the simple entry level single shot is as good as any of em. It is a new england firearms sportster and it was real cheap.
Old man,
I chose not to measure Tracy's big one either...i know how big it was and she never woulda made it. Every angler whose main concern is the fish has to really evaluate the fish before even removing it from the water. I personally rough measure in the water now for my own fish though i do take em out for guests if I think its safe.
Les thats exactly what i had in mind. I meant fish type...not shark brand. I only had 2 "good" weights and a few not so good and lighter. I lost one late last year and now have 3 riggers so im getting 4 new ones
Im getting new shark weights and im wondering if i should try a colored flasher like weight or stay with the old coated black. Any opinions? Ive only ever used coated black round weights.
Harnesses work fine, but you catch a ton of off target species and small fish. 0Trolling diving baits and spoons is very effective and there is a ton of posts from the past several summers on this topic. I think if you read thru the walleye section you will get lots of ideas in addition to plenty more questions.
