  1. Captain Larry thank you for the help! Gambler, I ate the first one i caught outta the river and deep fried it was ok. We ate every last piece....had four kids to feed then on 1 income. Everything i caught we ate except carp including summer river catfish which was a staple as they were easy to catch. Bottom feeders from hot shallow water from right below the sewage treatment plant.....yum! Now I can eat as much walleye as i want so im fussy and seldom eat anything else. I have had 2 guests in 4 years that took 40 inchers to eat....both loved them, but I know people that love lake trout! 1 of the guests prefers bass to walleye so their opinion doesn't exactly carry much weight!
  2. 40 inch fish are fairly common now i can only imagine how much this would help. Id love to see more 45+ fish as they are tough to come by now. They really fill out if they live long enough. Still wish there was a better fish landing area along the causeway so shore guys could have a better chance of not beating fish on the rocks for those that do want to release fish.
  3. Welcome pm sent...ditto what old man said and add the first 400 yards of the west shore...sinking lines and big white flies...
  4. Onondaga county is the only county for Otisco....I know plenty of residents and can get done whatever is needed...just need direction as politics etc is not my forte...
  5. Bass fishing is stellar there....
  6. Im from 7r and thats where our farm is..lots of state land few deer and tons of permits including 2nd permits. My lease is 7s...tons of deer...little state land and many working tilled farms...few permits and no 2nd ones. I give up trying to understand....
  7. I just got off the phone with Dave Lemon our region 7 fisheries manager and he asked how the tiger musky fishing has been. I told him it has been stellar for most guys and especially better fish. I told him i felt raising the limit from 30 to 36 inches was the catalyst, and asked what the odds were we would see it raised to 40". He is all for it, but was met with plenty of opposition getting it to 36 so he felt it would take time but doable in the future. So it seems to me if we push a little, and get Muskies inc involved especially, maybe we can speed up the process? Any ideas? Captain Larry? Anyone else agree with me at least?
  8. I just got off the phone with Dave Lemon region 7 fisheries manager and wanted to share a little of our conversation with his permission. I shared with him again our concerns with the stocking cuts and explained to him it seemed to many that as soon as we started sharing catch info via the angler diary program stocking was cut. He assured me that simply put the 50 day fingering stocking program was so successful that a decision was made to stock more water using half the fish we would get. On the face of it this sucks, but the fish are still being stocked and the net result should be more walleye fishing opportunities for everyone. The one new piece of info i got, at least new to me, was that the region 7 crew will be assessing yoy survival every stocking year. This way if there is a bad year Dave will be able to get us fish the next year instead of skipping a year. While there is no guarantees this plan is sounding better. Dave is also going to get us fish if there are surplus fry on the off years. Lastly, i discussed some undersize fish i recently caught and a few from last year and he believes, as do I, that i have actually caught walleyes that were NOT stocked as there shouldn't have been 7-8 inch fish last year with no stocking or any 12-13 inchers this year for the same reason....yet i caught them.... The DEC seems committed to walleye being a part of the fishery and hopefully that doesn't change.
  9. Marking em good! Looks like big walleyes to me!!!! Real big
  10. Ive had the super bowl to toilet bowl feeling a few times catching suspended cats when walleye trolling....you finally get the fish to come up and then you see what it is...such a let down!
  11. I think walleyes vary more than any other fish from water to water. Ive seen 31+ inch fish under 10 from Dorchester and nearly identical length fish from otisco at 12 pounds. If there is unlimited food eyes will have handfuls of fat no matter when you catch them.
  12. Its time to think about finishing off the freezer with fall walleye not perch! Just kidding both are awesome....i was shocked at the number and size of the skaneatles perch...
  13. Story can't do it justice!!! He kept telling me to pump the fish in and I kept telling him it wouldn't move...had to be there but I was really leaning on that fish....and then having it pass the boat fighting over the top of the Bimini... Kevin, I had a nice bite this morning... fished solo and caught 3-4 and kept 1...found a pocket of fish on structure and caught 1 every pass I didnt snag up... Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. For sure Chas! Im just working a few different arrow weights trying to find the best blend of ke, momentum, foc balance and trajectory. I build my arrows so its really a simple thing to adjust arrow weight.
  15. Gill, I wondered what buckboardjr had for momentum and ke....I just went to chrono my new arrows i built and bow shop's chrono is down.....but nearest i can figure with exact arrow weight of 429 grains and a guess of bow speed at 325 (i was 352 with a lighter version of the same shaft) im at a ke of 100 and a momentum of .62. I could easily go a bit heavier but i have my foc where i want it and i never had a problem with the lighter arrows. I believe that the best setup will be a balance of arrow weight and speed....trajectory is a factor too...
  16. And did you actually weigh your arrows and chrono your setup?
  17. Just out of curiosity how much do your arrows weigh and how fast is your bow....ive done the momentum calculation on my setup....ive recovered EVERY deer ive touched with a rage....I'd have to go back and count but i watched all but one deer die on over 20 deer....the one that ran dropped within sight of where the deer was...and was 52yds. I love not tracking...how is this poor performance? Im not arguing as i understand your and dr ashby's point just wondered what you consider proper arrow weight and speed...ie .momentum?
  18. Im referring to braid....if you are talking flouro/mono im not the person to answer. As far as red disappearing first that happens deeper than most people fish when casting unless water is stained.
  19. As far as trolling goes ive used green the most as its the most common, but have used red, yellow, and white. I dont see a difference in catching fish. I use 6' seaguar blue label LEADER tied to a barrel with a clinch knot and barrel to braid with a Palomar. In fact i know of a few Erie captains that use different colors to help know which line goes to which rod in a tangle or fighting fish around other lines. I think line diameter as it relates to diving depth makes a bigger difference than color. If you are casting in crystal clear water perhaps line color makes a bigger difference though i havent really seen that as long as a leader is used.
  20. It all depends on what you plan on doing with the boat. If you wanna fish the bigger finger lakes or when its rough an 18' is prob a minimum. If you fish smaller water or are a fair weather family a pontoon is a great option. For small water a toon is a far more comfortable, more spacious vessel....there isnt a boat that is perfect for everything. As said above take your time before you buy and get on several boats.
  21. Not my first king...just first from the lake...and first that hit!
  22. I hope we dont see it show up on Otisco....walleye fishing may have been slow recently, but we sure have been enjoying the water.
  23. Kevin, Ive been lucky to get a chance on the big lake with captain jeff and jim....i cant get over the no weeds to deal with...at least its easy fishing when you cant get a bite...im used to A LOT of work even on almost every trip. I had a decent bite going on eyes for 9-11 trips and then it just went cold. Nothing but tigers and i dont bother them in the heat unless i have a guest. Bad year for eyes by my standards but thats fishing. Im hoping for a fall bite like 2 years ago to make up for it, but have to fish and see. Let me know if deer are sparse...seems im back to overpopulation....
  24. Good read all....i understand fishing is off but this year was my first trips on Ontario and honestly the fishing didnt seem nearly as tough as i read about. I think most are spoiled and forgot how good we have it....how can we expect AMAZING fishing every year...seems as though fishing has always had ups and downs King Davy I especially like your comments on releasing fish. 2 years ago a guest on my boat took me for steelhead in the SR and I caught a nice one put it on a stringer and quit. A couple guys said i really should release it. I then sat and watched the guys catch 20 or so and release them all...i figure they all killed at least one or more, but i got the dirty looks carrying out the ONE fish i came for...i havent been back.
