How do you catch surface feeding Crappies?
justtracytrolling replied to WillCFish's topic in Panfish
Tiny floating stickbait or flyrod would be my choice -

By no means is this easy fishing, but a cool way to catch eyes.

Take off the leader set on good fish and I've seen several brands fail with 1and 2 pound diameter. With the 4lb and a leader its nearly bulletproof. I also use the steelhead barrel swivels and they help with ease in the dark tying. We had 6 violent hits from tigers and 2 in particular last night and the braid doesn't fail if you use it correctly. Otisco night tigers
justtracytrolling replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Lures are toast anyway....I've always avoided the areas where i hear more tigers, but this year there is no such place seemingly. Hard to tire them on light tackle in 3 fow, they can actually jump over and out of the net they are so fresh. -
For anyone looking for a combo trip walleye and tigers topwater for some reason the tigers won't leave us alone walleye fishing. I've never had em night after night before like this. We had 6 tiger hook ups last night and everyone was mid 30's plus. I'm gonna be forced to walleye fish with 30 pound flouro leaders minimum at this rate. Great fun unless your looking for eyes....can't do better than a handful of eyes tops with them on me. Plus the 6 ruined/lost bombers. We have caught more tigers at night in the last 8 days than I have any 1 whole season fall included at night. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

If you use less than 4lb diameter for bigger gamefish and don't use some kind of shock leader you will definitely have trouble if you are into fish much....even with a med power walleye rod. Once in a while when I didn't have 4 rods rigged minimum my leader would get too short and I'd go without at the end of night rather than deal with tying braid to flouro...I paid the price enough times that I don't get lazy about anymore. Last night the group I had a few good tangles in the dark and with 4lb dia I could get them out the thinner stuff I would have been cutting. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I manage not to starve on Otisco!!! My dogs just had walleye supper from this weeks trimmings. Hermit, You hit the nail on the head squarely....now its practice and experience. I made half or even a third as many casts as the rest of you. I've learned to take breaks so I can be focussed for EACH cast. I missed one and joe missed 2. Some nights you can't miss others its a light bite. I can't tell you how much fun i had last nite....the tougher it is the better it feels to bend a rod. Crazy we couldn't catch during that hour long frenzy next to my boat.

You really aren't foul hooking them.....they are attempting to reproduce with your lure....toss out a bomber and don't turn the handle at all and you will catch em....when the bait is "rolling" up against your lure it attracts the eyes...the bait spooks and Mr walleye is left with a bomber in his mouth! If you set the hook when you feel the bait you catch one every cast. Extremely sensitive rods help...

Trolling in the channel is the approach i started with there...much easier to work the flat north of keibel rd....lots of fish there, but the guys that do well arent gonna help you or share info. Gotta put your time in!

Hermit got his first nice Otisco eye...26+inches! Nice job you earned it

Got out with BSMaster for some walleye, and hermit was up with pcpete on hermits boat so we had 4 LOU members out together. Action was very good, but we couldn't really get em to go till moonrise. Ended up 4-5 on my boat with fish from 20-26.

When you are "ON" the bait in the right place the eyes will show up to some degree at least 30-40 straight days regardless of wind, weather, or moon. Don't get me wrong classic good nights ie cloudy, on shore chop, on a full moon are better....way better! Lightning was still flashing while we were fishing....
