Fishing eggs in our streams and rivers
justtracytrolling replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Tournament fishing is a whole different issue, but I agree that conservation should factor there as well. Fish ending up in dumpsters after weigh-in is every bit as bad as killing trout for eggs. -
The eagles get plenty of 12-14" brown trout stockies, and the herons take way more tiger fingerlings than you can imagine. I'm gonna ask a private landowner in a key spot if I can place my coyote decoy where 2 particular herons decimate tigers. I spend half of the dark hours during the time that this happens fishing and I try to keep them run off, but last year they were even bolder. Its a short period of time when stocked fish are very vulnerable near the surface where avian predators clean up.

Gill-T, Be thankful you arent asking for money! I really thought you would have over a thousand signatures by now! Its no wonder we cant get fish and game laws that make sense...sportsmen just dont care and would rather complain than participate....pathetic Even if you dont fish for salmon, or dont even fish Lake Ontario you should be supporting this petition as a sportsman just on it's merit! -

Fishing eggs in our streams and rivers

As for the point of the thread, its absurd to kill trout just to have bait to fish for more trout. I know of an angler that snags browns in a certain fingerlakes outflow just for skein to fish all winter. Id turn him in, but have no idea exactly when it takes place. The angler actually showed me several jars he had and told me how he obtained them. Id like to think he ate the fish. -

I dont think the DEC is going to support ideas that reduce fishing opportunities for anglers. I understand your pain, but they dont stock trout so a few locals have world class fishing. They stock the fish so EVERYONE including out of state residents have an opportunity to fish. I hate the way people treat the streams, but the answer isnt to limit fishing opportunities. Keep in mind most of us travel from somewhere to fish. -
Nice! People helping people....love it! Last year old man left me a new musky lure on my deck at the lake just to say thanks for a little info I share with anyone anyways. Was a great gesture...lets you know there are still good people. Kudos to those help out others when they can for no reason other than they can!

Snow pack in Binghamton/N.PA area
justtracytrolling replied to Bonzoso's topic in Open Lake Discussion
As soon as you leave the triple cites and get in the country there is plenty of snow yet. I have none in Binghamton, -
I couldn't be happier with my captains pak....worth every penny. Tony is a great guy to deal with in addition. I was gonna make my own, but his work is far better than anything I could weld up.

I have 3 rangers, 1 for trout, and 2 musky sized nets. The big musky nets are my favorite, but many fingerlakes sized trout, and oneida walleyes go thru the netting. Just make sure you get a rubber coated one both for the fish and your sanity if you use trebles! Dicks carries them decently priced.

I wouldnt worry too much about the bait Joe. Stripers are easy enough to catch on any number of baits if you find them. I too believe commercial fishing is the problem, but its tough to get an idea of how many are caught by recreational anglers when they are so highly sought after from the carolinas to maine. Ive chased em up and down the coast and its amazing the number of anglers that target stripers. When numbers of stripers are in they get slaughtered. About 12-13 years ago anyone who threw a line out along the coast of NJ caught big stripers. In the mid nineties it was the outer cape, and lately the cape cod canal. To top it off there are seemingly infinite numbers of charter and party boats after them. Its a miracle they have come back from near extinction in 1980.

Im not worried at all about may...even if its slow for a week or so the alewives will end up on shore and so will the eyes. The first two weeks or so is when its most crowded and last year most guys gave up before it got real good. Most guys hate the weeds and when they get going it thins out even more. I didnt even take the boat out at night the first three weeks last year because I was too busy getting our RV set up and deck built. This year Ill be ready for the opener. Its the summer Im worried about...we need surface temps in the 80's for good summer trolling. Every year is different, and the only thing that stays constant is the guys that put their time in and work at it will do fine. The guys that fish the same as they always have will struggle. At least once a week all season I hear a fisherman say how the lake "used" to be good, there isnt any walleye anymore, or the tigers ate all the walleye. Its all nonsense....truth is you have earn em!!

Well if the sportsmen who enjoy the kings wont stand up for them it wont be too tough for those against the king salmon program to make cuts. Everyone likes to complain about the DEC etc, but yet they wont sign a petition and participate. I would have thought you would have a thousand signatures by now. Post a pic of a salmon caught on a trib and everyone comes out of the woodwork to crucify the poster....ask for people to sign a petition to protect the very same fish and nobody bothers. -
