  1. Ill take my toon to fish off from everytime! I wasnt comfortable with the speed either! My boat is set up to do any type of fishing Otisco has to offer and to bring guests...his boat is great for what he does. Im sure we'll be taking his boat when we are casting sticks at night together...especially if he gets a power-pole.
  2. Im pretty sure I eat well over the 8 ozs per week....especially in season when I can have it fresh! Im not aware of any advisories on Otisco!!
  3. Eat the walleye and save the smoker for salmon!
  4. I went last week to Towne Marine last week to pick up my son's new to him bass boat, a 21' Procraft with a Mercury 225 EFI. Yesterday we got a chance to put it on the water and run it a bit. We launched around 130 and played around near Lodi pt till 3. We brought a couple rods to try for perch, but we had so much fun running all Cody's gas that we never even opened a rod locker. I had never been on a boat like his and I was impressed. Even with a a few whitecaps it literally skipped along and we stayed bone dry. Im glad I dont have to put gas in it, but 60-70 mph is quite an experience. Next time though we'll have to try the perch...it was great just to be on the water.
  5. Ive been wanting to get a kids derby started, but havent exactly came up with a format that would be for kids new to fishing. The only thing I could come up with was to have it somewhere where there is several farm ponds. I didnt think I could find enough guys with boats that would take a couple kids each out on the lake. My family has 4 ponds on the farm and perhaps I can put something together. Id love to hear any ideas on the subject.
  6. Nice work Kevin! I can still remember waiting with my grandpa for my grandma to fry smelt up. Its probably eating smelt that got me hooked on fishing. Dip netting smelt at the salt mine on cayuga was my first fishing trip, and I remember thinking how awesome it was that we could go get them for ourselves. Of course looking back we should have been using them for bait to catch the trout that had to be right behind us feeding on the smelt! Those runs in the 70's were thick with smelt.
  7. Im not sure why anyone would keep a 36-40 inch tiger. The only reasons I can think are either to eat them, hate for predator fish, its the biggest fish they've ever caught (though not really that big), or to enter in a derby/tournament. I hope they are utilized at least.
  8. I couldnt agree more! Too many of us think in terms of what suits our needs and not what is best for everyone. Hunt your own hunt!
  9. Ditto on the special mate boxes. Combine that with a rocket launcher to keep all your rods outta the way.
  10. Id like to see the tigers grow to maturity before they are taken. Raising the size limit to 36" helped, 40-42 inches makes more sense to me. I look at tigers as a sport fish not tablefare. Its my understanding these apex predators are stocked to help keep bait(alewives) in check. The problem is the tigers dont do this job very well until they mature and move into deeper open water where the bait is! The tigers we get in open water are almost always over 36". That doesnt mean the big fish cant be targeted in the weeds...just that the immature fish dont spend much time offshore eating alewives.
  11. Seaguar blue label for leader and seaguar invisx for mainline flouro for me!
  12. In the area I grew up in meat hunting was shooting buck and NOT does. I dont subscribe to this notion any longer, but I was taught that if you shot does there would be no deer to hunt. Plenty of hunters still hunt this way in my area, but it is changing. I think with patience the quality of bucks will improve, but we dont need manatory AR's. Joe has it right...it should be a sportsmans choice.
  13. If you had a farm with serious crop damage that took money out of your pocket you might think differently on the subject of nuisance permits. In most cases the deer that do the damage dont "live" right on the farm with the problems. The deer travel at night to destroy thousands of dollars of crops and the only way to stop it is thru nuisance permits. The deer simply arent huntable during the daylight.
  14. Funny you should post this today...I woke up this morning thinking I cant wait till Im running on no sleep just to catch a fish! The anticipation of the weekend all week, driving up to camp, sleepless nights, and early morns. Its what we dream of all winter!
  15. We are getting by....starting to gear up for walleye season already. This year looks like I'll be doing some guiding. Just ran out of time and money last year to do it right. Glad I waited anyway....there's so much to learn if you wanna be any good. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. Believe me Ive spent days portaging and paddling to get to a place I wanted to fish only to be skunked. Trolling a dozen rods and even more baits tends to minimize that type thing. Plus, trolling gives you the opportunity to work the reaction bite at speeds that would be tough to fish by hand. Fish can be patterned, but its tough.
  17. Id say more like 1 in a thousand and he is more like 1 in many million!!! But even a pro cant make them if they dont have the right equip and the right set up too!
  18. Smoothbore shotgun to be clear, which is what I grew up on. I doubt you have much to worry about because the average person wouldnt launch a 30-40 dollar arrow at a poke and hope, or spend the 3 grand it would take to set up a long range crossbow. To attempt it on game with the 10 cent scope it comes with you are correct that wouldnt be ethical. You should check out some of Levi Morgans long kills with a compound....well over 100 yards....he's a freak! Im not mad at ya either...
  19. First of all I never said Id shoot 100 yds at a deer in the wind and secondly I havent even bought one yet. The 1 I set up isnt setup for shots like that yet. That would take another 1500 bucks and the guy I set it up for wanted 50yds and thats about what he's got. Im not going to debate ethics with someone who has no idea what someone else is capable of. Personally, Im not ready for that shot, but I know a couple guys who have made them. My long range expertise is limited to rifles. I mere was discussing the accuracy of the crossbow in ideal conditions. If you would like to debate long range ethics lets move the talk to longrangehunting.com and Ill be happy to discuss it. If you want to compare 400 fps to 3000fps id suggest changing the rifle range to approx. 800 yards and I think youll find wind makes a diff.
  20. I agree 100% but I believe if you are good you know when to be where. Especially if you are trolling. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. You have to bench any long shot with a gun also...and wind effects long rifle shots too. Its a different type of hunting and shooting. There is far more that goes into it than even has been brought up. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. I do up my fish right when I get in no matter how many and how little sleep, but I didn't always get pics and when I did they weren't to good! I get such a high from those walleye that sometimes it takes me a while to get to sleep anyway. Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. You got skunked a lot less than I did Kevin! Im still thinking about what I was doing wrong that I couldn't seem to make the right moves some of the time. I do know I added a lot to my bag of tricks this last season. We definitely gotta trade trips this year for certain Kevin! Sent from my XT1080 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
