  1. You are probably right Ed...we dont want a biased experiment! In fact we probably need a few cold ones to go with it too! Of course then we'll have to sit around and discuss the difference with a few more cold ones.
  2. Ive always filleted them alive and hosed em off...similar, but Ill try kevins way. Ill do 1 each way and throw each in a pan and taste test.
  3. Nice...sounds exactly like my night friday...they werent committing... i shoulda went faster maybe... Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Just thought here is some sought after fish and nobody is fishing for them! I just walk over and get $3 bucks worth of minnows and drop em off my dock when i want em, but there is plenty out there. The dock is private to clarify. The pond side of the causeway is an untapped resource....wait till you see the eyes Im gonna pull outta that turbid water soon...there is plenty of water even in a small lake...just have to fish! Making solid contacts with the DEC techs through the angler diary program has made a difference in my fishing. Ive definitely learned a few things I never would have come up with, and in turn I help them in anyway I can. It was fun to compare where they did the best with gill nets and shocking with where I caught the best. When you put the scientific data (oxygen levels, survey data, etc) with my catch data it paints a clear picture of what happened this summer. Its been a very difficult year to fish Otisco if you tried what worked in the past...no matter how good you think you are Otisco will make you earn em. Tough fishing makes a better angler!
  5. My contact at the DEC that visited our walleye event stopped to see me Monday at camp. He wanted to share the recent gill net survey info they collected...Thanks for the visit BTW. I have posted a few times this summer that we have a good population of crappie under my dock all day everyday, but I was told they found excellent numbers of crappie on the pond side in many areas. My deck overlooks this area and I can positively tell you nobody is targetting these crappie. So if anyone is interested in crappie on water that is easily fishable from a small canoe on all but the nastiest days pm me and Ill be happy to help. These crappie love the turbid water and they stay in shallow water all year 8' or less. We havent caught many big crappie keepers are no prob and we usually get a couple decent 12-13 inchers.
  6. Oneida really isnt to difficult to troll for eyes and perch...check out miss em's post in the walleye section. I used to have very similar results when I trailered. Id make a run up with either of you Ed and DJ. I dont have much time left...have to be SOON! Either way Miss em laid it out in detail for you guys and its a very easy lake...other than it can get ROUGH in a small or slow boat...not that you have much to worry about ED!
  7. Welcome to the site! There is tons of finger lakes info on here too which might be better suited for much of the year for you and your boat.
  8. John I hope my son does the same for me! I know Ill fish like a cat if i have to in order to be out there with my son....but thats me. Great to read about people that overcome their obstacles to still be out there doing it.
  9. Great job Kevin! Now thats a harvest...how do you like to prepare them? Ive never really developed a taste for them and consequently havent pursued them since the guy I gave them to lost his health.
  10. I know im on a toon and small water but i added a door in the side towards the stern so i could reach the water and release fish without lifting them. It makes dealing with big tigers a breeze. I net them, open the door, lay the net on the floor, then when i kneal down i make sure the net handle is under me. Now i have a nice pen where i can take my time and work on the fish. Boat keeps fishing when the fish is revived u dip the net. Never lift em or touch em unless for a pic. Works good for little fragile browns too. Just open the door bend down unhook with pliers and bye bye...no lifting or dropping the fish back. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. That sounds like a good solution for someone who needs assistance. Did it work well for your dad? Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. If you are gonna troll em id go to oneida! Fish here on otisco are all moving up and in towards shore. Im marking much less suspended over the flat lake floor. DJ its nearly time for you to come back n get some fillets...ill let you know in a pm soon! Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Jeff i cant deny that if it werent for fuel costs i would have trailered up a few times just to day fish and catch numbers! Night fishing isnt possible for everyone or enjoyable. I actually am over last seasons numbers considerably, but its been almost all night fishing. Last year i never had to fish at night in the summer. Good oxygen levels to 35 feet this late in the year made it possible for the fish to stay down in cooler less active temps. Where as 2 years ago when EVERYBODY caught all summer Good oxygen levels barely made it down 20, with last year in between, forcing them up where they are more active and easier to target. Plus with cooler overall water temps this summer the eyes were willing to go shallow at night all summer. When temps get well into the 80s they dont come in that shallow water where the bait is at night. We only hit 80 for 4 days and i trolled 21 in daylight that weekend. You and JGS got em that weekend too along with a few others. Long story short the walleyes were uncatchable in daylight basically...twilight maybe. 14. Nice! You are living the dream Kevin...enjoy! Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Pretty well handled id say kevin. Still PITA, but we just move on cuz neither of us is gonna quit! It was weird for me because I had never had an incident on otisco and then three in 2 weeks and a bunch of other minor close calls. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. So i tried a big spoon with my normal bx swimmer trolling weedlines on otisco...no tigers but had largemouths hammer each at over 4 mph. Water looked great today. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. John do you find with salmon sometimes they want shallow sticks off longer lines (less action) and other times the same lure in a deep version on short lines (more action)? I do both at the same time fished at the same depth off inlines in tight for walleye until they tell me which way they want it. Its different every night. Just wondered as someday ill get brave and drag my boat out for em! Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. I also should mention I had to cast around the masts when they were up front. Now with them in the middle the front deck is wide open. I often troll and cast in the same trip with 4-5 guys. Of course this isnt likely on Ontario, but in a finger lakes setup jigging and trolling the same trip is common. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Frank funny thing is they were using same lure as me. Thats why i thought they read my posts. They got 2 nice ones so they said a minute before they cut me off. I saw them land several bass that went back and 1 fish didnt go back that i saw prob an eye. So ill prob see em once a week for a while. No big deal bet they go wider next time. I have plenty of good water to work that will keep me away from anyone flatlining. Just about time to fish over the weeds again. Ask Johnnywalleye how hard it is to find a seam in the weeds in the dark even if you know about where....and if theres a chop youll never do it without waypoints :-):-)! 20. Nice job Alex! I probably should take the boat over there or skinny next weekend before my fall bite gets going....i could use some day fishing. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. Jeff its neat that though we never talked about oneida trolling we both troll the EXACT same stretch! Kinda like the white house here on Otisco... Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. Nice! Hits on the boat rods are better IMO...love short setbacks, screaming drags, and rods instantly folded over that you struggle to get outta the holders. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. I certainly agree pap, but i dont know for sure they had too much. It definitely only takes 1 serious problem and things change for everyone...if i could only fish in daylight id sell my place, boat, and go to ontario. I do know they pinched me off and they were having fun. Its not practical to patrol at night regularly on the lake for the DEC or sherriffs and the launches are private so its a free for all at night from a boat. I can make a call next time...if its obvious. Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. No doubt clip weights on multiple coppers off boards over dipsies sounds like a PITA! In a small spread with only 1 copper a side off an outrigger or inline bet its a breeze tho right Les? Sent from my LG-L38C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Swimbaits work jigging so i bet they do, but hard to control your depth. Ive been meaning to try them un weighted off riggers, but havent gotten to it. Plus i think youd want a treble as you dont get much hookset. Sticks and shad raps etc are just the easiest things to troll...expensive...but highly effective!
