That was a good question I had to pull one off the shelf to look. It is still there, it is a composite material I do believe same as the body. Personally I like the saltist reels they are so worth the money. But being a tackle shop owner I can tell you that if these are the reels what you want they have an amazing price on them. You probably won't find a better deal.
We use okuma blue diamond full rollers. 8'6" heavy action 2-3 rods each side and stager them 3'apart. works good for us and we get a good spread. I haven't read the other comments but this works awesome for us.

In the river fish the West Bank at turning point or Seth green drive by the island. Use bright and noisy bait. The river is has bad viability. Our #1 lure in the river is a 3/4 oz silver little Cleo. Turning point has big bass, northers and walleye . But fish the West Bank in the cattails and trees. The bottom structure is fantastic.
Did you find out the problem with the boat? Usually what you described is nothing more than a 2.00 exhaust riser gasket that they stock at west marine. If you have any questions let me know.
