  1. Rich, if that happens, 1) the battery is weak or of insufficient rating for the starter 2) the starter is drawing too much current for some reason 3) the wiring to the fish finder is inadequate Or a combination of the above.
  2. You most likely have a poor connection somewhere between the battery and the Garmin. You can try just wiggling every connection (both 12 volt and ground) from the battery to the Garmin one at a time and then see if it turns on. If it does, wiggle the same connection again to see if it causes it to shut down. The voltage may read fine until you try to turn the unit on. Once you turn it on and there is a current draw, a poor connection can cause a substantial voltage drop which will cause the unit to shut down again. If that happens, replace, repair or clean corrosion at that connection. keep in mind that copper wire that does not have a shiny copper look is corroded and will need to be cleaned with sandpaper or scotch brite pad before making a connection to it. All connections must be tight and clean of corrosion. You can use sand paper or a scotch brite pad to clean corrosion. If a connection is loose, you might be able to tighten it up by squeezing connector with pliers to give a tighter fit. Sometimes connectors that are crimped to wires can be just a little loose (almost not noticeable). Keep in mind that there can be more than one poor connection so if you find a problem, go through the same procedure and check every connection again. Another thing you can do is just inspect and clean and/or replace/repair every connection between the Garmin and the battery. If it is at all questionable, replace, clean and/or repair it. Sometimes a connection can look ok but if it is a little loose or there is a slight amount of corrosion, that could be a problem. In a boat there can be multiple connections causing the same problem and this is not uncommon because of the environment. It is not a matter of if you will have these kinds of problems. It is a matter of when. You can be proactive and check for these kinds of problems periodically. It can be a real problem if your boat's running lights fail to operate and you don't find out until you need them. A voltmeter might help you to isolate or verify a poor connection but it will not necessarily show a drop in voltage unless current is being drawn by the Garmin at the time of measurement. Every electrical connection is a potential point of failure. There are methods that are used to help seal and protect connections from the harsh environment which can help greatly.
  3. JOE ESOX, I have been working out tournament details with the board and will be posting the details in a day or two on the Chapter 69 site. I will also post a thread here with a link. The format, times, locations, entry fee, and payout will be largely the same as last year.
  4. Fished Waneta on Sunday with Mark from about 10am till 830pm. Zippo. Drizzle most of the day. Water temp. was 68 to 69 and air temp felt like it never made it over 50. Had pouring rain all the way home except it stopped while we were at Canandaigua exit unloading Mark's gear.
  5. That is my boat in the background of Zach's picture. I took a pic of them taking this pic but ...eahhh.
  6. Thank you for bringing my attention to this string again. It reminded me about the great and extensive compilation of information from The Next Bite that Todd Cook had put together. The "Magazine & Books Snippets" PDF has many extremely interesting articles that provide a great deal of insight into the complex nature of the balance of freshwater fisheries. I have only read about 20% of them so far but had a hard time pulling myself away. I will have to work at reading the rest of them. Thank you, tmag for giving us the link to this. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM READS THEM. I'd like to get in contact with Todd Cook to thank him for putting it all together. So if anyone here knows him, please ask him to contact me. Good luck to everyone this season. And as always, please be kind to the fish.
  7. This forum will only fuel your addiction. You will also meet a lot of friendly people from both sides of the pond who share your passion for fishing.
  8. Hope you are kind to the muskies when you encounter them and spread the word to others to do the same.
  9. I think the improvement projects are slated to commence this year.
  10. This was a last minuet scheduling. Sorry for such short notice. As with all our meetings, this is open to the public. Justin Okrepki, justtracytrolling, will be speaking at tonight's 7PM meeting at the Moose Lodge at 5375 West Henrietta Rd. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who is more knowledgeable about Otisco Lake. He practically lives, eats and sleeps on Otisco lake. Justin is arguably the most successful walleye angler on the lake but has also become very knowledgeable in regard to the tiger musky fishing on the lake over the years. If you want to learn how to successfully fish Otisco throughout the year, Justin will point you in the right direction. We will also be reporting the results of the Saturday's Tiger tournament on Otisco and will be drawing the winner for our Booze Basket Raffle (last chance to buy tickets) and making plans for the upcoming Chautauqua Musky Tournament on Sat. June 27th. With this year's revised meeting schedule, Tonight will be our last meeting until Mon Sept. 21st. Good luck to everyone this season. I will be looking forward to your reports on the LOU.
  11. My trailer is galvanized so there is no rust. With mine it is just that the spring holders are a weak point plus I think the boat was the max size for the trailer and I added the kicker and 2 more batteries. At one point I had custom springs made that were a little heftier than the original ones. I replaced the spring brackets once many years ago for the same problem. There are two points where they are prone to cracking due to stress. I had these reinforced a couple years ago by a welder. Had to leave boat at jojo's (because the axle was ready to fall out) and he took it to someone. The job he did wasn't what I has in mind and I was expecting them to crack again just where it did.
  12. What about enforcing the regs that are already in place. From what I hear, there are fishermen on Waneta Lake almost every day now fishing for muskies out of season. I have also been told that they target them through the ice there all winter long. I also hear plenty of reports of undersize fish being kept and exceeding creel limit. Or catching a limit, unloading them and going out for more.
  13. It is looking like I will not be able to go due to trailer problems. After replacing the side marker lights. I thought I would jack it up and check the wheel bearings and suspension. I found out that one of the spring brackets is cracked all the way through on the front side just behind where it is attached with the U bolt. So it flops down when I jack it up. I will take it to a welder tomorrow morning to see if he can repair it and if he has the time to do it.
  14. See you there Jay. Looks like the weather will be good. Hope the fish will cooperate.
  15. Statewide regulation for min size is 30" but Otisco Lake and Conesus Lake are 36". Problem is with the DEC enforcing the regulations. DEC Officers seem to be unconcerned about enforcing Esox regulations. As far as fishing regulations are concerned, they seem to concentrate their efforts on trout and licenses. At least now that there is no set date to renew licenses, maybe they will spend more effort in enforcing seasons, size and creel limits. Or is this just wishful thinking. Statewide size limit for purebred muskies is now 40" but I wonder how many will be violating that. All of us who care just need to do as much as we can to get people to comply and educate them as to the reasons why. FishermanUpstate, Did you tell the guy with 28 incher that it was under the legal size limit?
  16. old man will have to leave before the cookout so we will have to figure out where to keep the food til then. I was just wondering if anyone will have a cabin and be staying over till Sunday. Otherwise we will have to keep it in one of our trucks.
  17. Agreed. Run at or close to max. 35# is way too low and can cause sway problems and tires will wear excessively on edges.
  18. The NMA raffled this 5 foot Mr. Toothy lure at the Odyssey along with a 4 foot spinerbait made by Joe Wilczewski. Tony Galucci of Beaver Baits won it. And yes, those hooks are real hooks.
  19. Our 2014 Awards Banquet was held on April 18th 2015 at Keenan's Restaurant. Atendance was modest, the food was good and it was an overall good time. The raffle table was very good for the amount of people in attendance. The awards were given based on members entries in the Muskies Inc. Lunge Log. Dr. Dave Palo was the Men's Division Most Points with 408 total points for 41 fish caught and his largest fish was 49". Bridgett Palo won the Youth Division Award with 16 points for a 42.25" fish. Andy Lacko won the Big fish Award with a 55"er he caught on a Bondy Bait in the St Lawrence River. I can't figure out how to put pics in post. Can someone tell me how. I reduced them to 800x 600 Extif/JPEG and they pasted ok in the editor but didn't show up when published. Below is the best I can do.
