Im looking to get 2 new reels for my downrigger rods
finsntins replied to bondouley's topic in Tackle and Techniques
had to go back and reed the original post,i guess for rigger reels you could get away without line counters, not setting them back to far,i guess you could count,i like to know exactly what the set back is for repetion,i have never been on a boat that doesnt have them, but to each his own. and high speed would be good for rigger reels,i didnt like them for pulling in dipsies,i could have tried them for the riggers, but i hated the location of the linecounter. -

threw it out,for the price of them, just go buy a new one.tried the saltists last year for wire, they lasted 2 weekends, couldnt stand them.the line counter digs in your wrist and dont like the high gear ratio, its like pulling in a 20 lb laker with just the tripped dipsey. -

start off by going through posts here on lou.fishing reports, tackle and techniques, ect.if you are fishing the east end of the lake and are looking for salmon, you have lots of time to do your research.dan keating has some books and dvd's that are good.also, like was stated above, jump on a charter, post here in the trade a seat section that you would like to go out with someone to learn or sign up to be an observer for one of the many tournaments across the lake.once you start learning, you will be able to ask more detailed questions that can be answered by the great fisherman on this site.you can pm me and i would be happy to answer questions as best as i can.

i have 1992 24' wellcraft sportsman walkaround.i bought this boat 3 years ago and never did anything with it.i laso have a 1987 200 hp yamaha that i took off a boat i used 2 years ago, motor runs greatand just bought a trailer.the boat has all the rigging for the yamie, just needs to be hooked up.boat is in really good shape, just needs a cleaning.stand up cabin with sink, stove, fridge and head.large open deck.i also have fishfinder, gps, and manual riggers ill throw in.i am planning on putting this all together and selling it turn key this summer, but if someone wants a project,id be willing to sell now.$2,500.motor alone is worth that.

the run is water temp.dependent.as the water warms they keep heading up the river.so,depending on where you fish, will dictate what time.usually mid-april they start showing up down south and by beginning of may they are up to albany, but probably will be later this year.i use my rigger rods,a sinker slide, which is a plastic slide with a clip for your sinker.your fishing line passes through it and you stop it with a barrel swivel 3 feet above your hook, this allows you to change weight as the tide changes in strength.we dont drift,we anchor up on shoals or channel edges and fish the bottom with herring chunks and always 1 live lined.like was stated above, leave reel in neutral with clicker on.stripers like to pick up a bait, run with it a bit then drop it,then come back for it,so,dont set the hook right away, let them run.stripers 24/7 is a great site to learn and keep up with reports.also, river basin sport shop in catskill has a great website with reports.he has run a striper contest for the last 27 years, but is looking to retire soon,so isnt running it this year.look at the size of the fish that have won in the past!!!!!giz,if you are looking to go,i think i have hooks, sinkers and the slides ill give you if you need them. -

Leadcore set ups
finsntins replied to TileMan Dan's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
first part of spring, less than 15 fow, fish usually wont slide out unless the wind pushes the warm water and or bait out.once the water starts getting into the 50's,they start to move out,but still suspended, then once the lake sets up,look for 55 degree water where it meets the bottom. -

wasnt a tiger,we lost him cause he wouldnt fit in the net!!!!!when he flipped out he just layed there for a bit,so i got a good look at him.you can catch lakers fairly easy in the spring, but once the water warms and they start heading deep, its all over.pike are a little easier to target and find then lakers in the summer.
