  1. Hey John,...nothing to the lead core..I run 20lb..(thinner and sinks fast) then I have 20'mono lead...sometimes I run 15lb...when I bass fish I run 10lb...seeing the water is normally dang clear. The colors are set up on the package as to the length. One color is 15yds...I run 1.5 color 20'.......or more...depends on lure action,...But the beauty is you can get spoons,,diver..stick baits down to 20-30'without the down rigger,...and when the fish hits,,you know it..! If I fish 20' and hit bottom...just let out less line,,and then you know right where your lure is running,,or..move the boat 5-10 deeper.! Fun stuff! Good luck out there,,,try a few different style running lures...you can "feel" the action on the stick baits..and know they are clean of grass or debris. If they get junk on them, with a quick snap of the pole,.you can.pull some stuff off to clear the lure..Good luck!
  2. I picked up my old fishing partner(25+years) at 620 am...a bit grumpy but that's how we roll....Out of the launch and right onto a rare and perfectly Flat L Ontario....beautiful !! We put out some flatlines and lead core,,all small shad raps, perch stick baits with 3 shot up the line.5 lines.Even had the planer board running like it was April...! Not 10 min in the troll 20' was the target depth,,surface was 65,..flat calm,..we nailed a smallie on the perch yellow bird,...Next goes the outside planer with a SNAP,..!! This was either a record bass or something else..!! Up comes a beautiful colored Brown about 7lbs,...quick release into the lake,,,no pic,,sorry..another bass takes the shad rap on the lead core,....Meanwhile,,my eagle eye partner cannot help notice there are 1000'sof bugs on the surface,...and to boot,..there are a few big rollers commin up around us...random as heck,,,but there are some big fish feeding on the :hatch: if that's what was going on,.. The lead core takes another hard rap,..( 10lb test )...few minits later,..another beast of a brown ends up in the net.Wow.! Who;da guessed.! Had to wrap it up..hit the launch at 9... out there.!! What a great fishery out there!! Tight Lines.! ya just never know.........
  3. Sounds like an exotic get away...right.? Lemme tell you what,,..there were some weeds coming outa that south end with the south breeze...! Man! One was big enough,... if the Town of Canadaigua saw it,..they would try and charge taxes on it!! This thing was easy 20'long and 8' wide....thick and stringy. Well..that set up a slalom course of a troll for sure,..I tried to start at White Rock,..SE cornor of the Lake,..but that was the Worst spot to go.. ..so I found out,... But I kept it steady to the North to Whiskey Point,..Picked up a nice dinner bow on the side pole Sutton 61...little guy lure..100 TL 30oz..2nd lead down..using my highly questionable math,...bout 60' down. Now that my Merc has double mulched half the weeds in the lake,..I pull a hard left for the west side....Screen goes blank with the exceptin of some schools of bait 20-30' over 175.... With the wind going into overdrive...I had to aim more south...(I did not want to see the beach at the N end !) and picked up another 18" bow on the float this time..2nd lead down,..50'TL 20 oz.....using my really poor math again,,..throw the dart out there,,,mmmm bout 45' down Then the jets ski's and ski boats started showing up,..the wind dropped off for a bit,..and I hit the s end launch with out too much traffic 12;30... Heres a pic of the weeds,...Not like you haven't seen em,..jeez..!just passing clean of my wire rig- Good luck..Tight Lines
  4. Nice Laker.Laker Taker.//I am going to guess the Cooler put the spots on that big ole boy.. I was at the launch Fri when it was 55 degrees,...the cold kept some folks away. But at 645am I was #8..So,your advise to trout hunter is spot on,...I started fishing Hemlock when it was a one lane mud road back in there.....Ease of access has opened up the flood gates to car top-canoes and anything that floats....No Problem with the lake size,..However the launch can get abit congested while the folks grab their starbuck Lat'es and such..some folks hang in the launch waiting for others to join them,..That will plug it up ina hurry...Especially if you use a Trailer like I do,.. Early Bird gets the worm,..Early fisherman,..get a parking spot.Be safe! Nice fish..again.!
  5. yes indeed,..We have been there once before,..LoL..I told these guys they would have been Late for dinner,,,if they were paddling,...seeing they did not have oars suited for the boat,.! Just a couple plastic paddles,...Jeeez,! ...I fell short of giving them the ole man lecture,..and they were very happy to take the tow..!..oh,..and help someone else if you can!!surprised a 9.9 got em where they needed to go,..!Thanks for checkin in,..best of luck...running out of Woodville in the AM... report later!
  6. North wind.clearing skies....I knew the fish would be locked down,...but...sometimes a man has to do what he has to do.Go Fish!..I put in seth green mini-3 leader rigs and went south...Surface temp 74.clear water..some weeds on the surface. Started off the launch and went south towards the pump house,,,tough to see the pump house while clad in green leaves...but its south on the west side about a mile,...1st big cove..then south before the 1st rock cliff. Marked some bait 20'...few fish...went east and marked more bait with some small marks 20-35'...still no takers.I started at 645...and was #8 to launch based on trailers in the lot. By 10 I was ready to pull it in,..stuff to do,..no hits,...I saw 2 guys pulled up on shore...One guy was in the back of the boat reeffing the crap on an old blue/white Johnson.... Long story short,..2 young buck took the tow and a half hour later we were all at the N end launch...Beats rowing.!! I was surprised to see my 9,9 pulled their 13' fiberglass along,..I had one guy..Kevin sit with me and tow the other to even things out,.. Th cold air kept the crowd away today,,,all in all..a good day on the water.! Tight Lines.!
  7. South end fleas were not bad,...had some hang on the Dacron,...but the wire was mostly clean... Go south Sk8man,,,go south
  8. I made the first run this year,..too busy with life!!...Launched at our wonderful 2 dock ramp and tooled up to Cooks Pt and dropped in the old standard,...float with 26oz 4 leaders....sidepole wire w 32oz.5 leaders...Surface temp was 68,..water had a slight Tea color from all the rain I am guessing.... The marks were on 100-110' deep..Most fish huggin bottom,...The middle of the lake was blank and I do not go shallower than 100' or I have the Chinese fire-drill getting the rigs off the rocks/mud ect...Ran North to the condos.....I picked up a small laker,..side pole 100' top line on the bottom lure.....Gold Miller 7...guessing he was down 100'...later I picked up a stocker brown,...all of 10 inches..! I am crushing the toads today.! Swung back south at the 2nd sighting of a jet-ski...called it in noon... All in all it was a perfect day on the water,...I had 2 gents inside of me ...looked like they were pulling copper,..they said they had 4 ..one 30"...before 930am.Good day to fish,..few fleas..few boats.! Go Get em,.. I will enter my modest catches ( and releases ) in my DEC diary and hope they misplace it.!! R K
  9. looks like a while before its safe to launch....very steep dirt drive to the new water-line...Nicepic.! Thanks for sharin.!
  10. That sounds like one of my trips ..I have 25+ years on Hemlock....It was Great on the late 80's.They were stocking Atlantics and tons of browns..Fishing was good pulling 3 leader seth green side pole and float rig...I recall it was best may/june.....one the water gets warm,..the thermocline is very tight and the fish are in a tight window of water,..thus old seth to the rescue.! Bad to the skunk,...early like now,,,it runs hot and cold....good day bad day.....I believe a good week of warm weather to help set up the thermocline puts the fish in a feed mode,,and they will seek either bottom(lakers) or 25-40 seems to be a fav depth ...Much deeper and the lack suffers from lack of oxygen,..so the experts say.. Not sure if this helps,,,one thing for sure...the boat ride is always a Good one.!Love the scenery! Tight Lines.! ps if you goto DEC website,..find Biologist report for current stocking#s on Canadice and Hemlock..(all the other Lakes too!)
  11. Good eye Sk8 man... Leave it to the Authorities to put in a ramp...but skip the dredge....uh huh There used to be a small can just N of the launch and out about 20yds......that may be the rock pile you guys have been in Contact with,.....but mostly mud as you pointed out..! Yeah,..no fun for the IB/OB 's be safe..! Go slow and keep em up,.....I can remeber back in the day running in on the Kicker,...winds permitting...! RK
  12. All good pointers,... It is not a home-made float but it cannot be beat,,,Check out my post woodville 7-26...I took a pic of my Tupperware Rolling Pin,... Works great on cookie dough and Rainbows and upper level fish, ..( H2o Temp Dependent of course.!) I use 30 lb Dacron...25' spacers and bead chains.....In lakes like Hemlock where bottom is 60-70'...I used to go 15'...but would have tangles when catchin jumping fish like Rainbows,,,and back in the 80's...an a occasional Landlock....! Best of luck..! Rk
  13. Last time I went there ,..Aug 2nd.....it was still the temp dock,..( guess no dock makers in the Finger Lakes ) .... Good water for a big boat,...one Lane only,..so pick your time wisely,..and Day..! The rail along the launch makes it tough to launch solo,...I normally bring waders and do not need a launch per say,..but I am pushing out a 9.9 and 14' alumn... Good Luck and Tight Lines
  14. Now THAT is what I call a FLOAT Rig...! Good pics..! Lakers are very tight lipped !!! Good stuff
  15. Good Luck Sk8man,.. I hope the fleas are DONE for the season,......!!! Best of luck! Old saying,...You dont know if you dont GO.!! Just Go..!
  16. I had to take the day off,....2 reasons,..beat the weather for the weekend..."More showers" and .second..avoid the "Rush" at the ONE Lane launch in Woodville....I guess NYS is still looking for their new docks to show up,..... Anyway,..pulled the rigs and have a shot of the Tupperware rolling pin I have used for years...One snap to the bead chain,..and a slightly longer lead off the back of the float that just hooks on the line....This length can vary depending on speed and weight you like to fish with.....The way I have it set,...She comes thru the water easily and you can detect smaller fish most the time,..(I usually run 16oz out there,),,any more and the sinker will "swim" and its tough to tell if there's aliitle guy on there...I also set the drag lite so,..a weed ball or small fish will rip a few feet off no problem... Went up towards Vine Valley,...marked some fish 60-50fow over 125....m-t screen out in the middle.!! so I kept it to the drop offs,..in and out of 100-140...Popped 2 decent Rainbows..! One on the side pole...3rd lead dowm 100' TL 30oz......2nd fish hit the float,...4th lead,.one 17.5" the other 18" Dinner.!!...16oz 50' Top Line.....so,...we is Done..! I tell my fishin partner for the morning,.... I pulled the float and dropped the side pole to 130'on the heads of some very tight lipped Lakers,....and No Takers...! Did that drill for 2 hours,...by then the jet ski's were out and pontoon boats....so,..we departed..! All in all,..good day on the water early,..calm,..sunny, very nice to fish the south end...It is always nice to see the hills. Tight lines,,! PS Fleas were no where...!!!!! RK
  17. Sk8man hit some great points,.....all the negative Meat Riggin set aside,....Seth Green came up with the rigs,in the 1800s, to find fish in the deep cool lakes...without all the electronics,..and all the tight lipped fisherman from back in the day,it was tough to get a hint on how deep the fishwere...Therefore..you covered it all.!..The classic rig was the old Victrolla record player. You used to be able to pick on up at a garage sale pretty cheap..under $50 bucks.Unless you were ina Antiqueshop,..then they were$200.! Guys would puta ton of cork and a homemade spool on top....As the Mainline came in(or out ),The 20-25 foot leads would follow with the spoon. There was a trick to each set up...getting the rig in,..in order,,and letting it out in order....It was best to remember the top spoon,..middle and bottom so things would not overlap...I think I am still figuring it out...Fun way to fish with some coaching.and very effective. Best float I ever ended up with and still use today-----Tupperware Rollin pin----Plastic and slender...Nice Chartruse color,...Cant Miss It..! (Unless you are skiing or jetskiing..!!) At htat point,.it becomes part of the slomonmcourse.! It has a nice profile and even small fish can trip the drag easily. Prob find it on line..or local sls person...Paint it up Bright.!! Tight lines to all ps That's my special Rainbow Rig..!!!The Float.! RK
  18. Good Luck,...! When the wind is from the South.it blows the Bait into the fishes mouth,,... Not sure where that stuff came from,...but Ithink of it now and then.! Keep an eye (lure) at 50'.....Rainbow level ..!
  19. nice Brownie,...I looked at DEC stockin numbers,..they put a ton of those liitle lakers in recently,......I am glad to see some made it past the Pickeral into deep water,......aggressive little guy..! Bite something as big as himself.!! I have heard they average a pound a year for growth rate in the Finger lakes..So,..future keeper in 3 yrs.!Good report !! tight lines..! any fleas on the lines.....? Normally the fleas are heavy by late June...last time I went,(2 weeks ago)...no sign of em.!
  20. SK8Man, agreed on Lake fishin in June..,rainbow limit, yoyo's after 11am.. and Safe act......what years did you nite fish the S End,.?..you get your bait from John Clark..?
  21. Mr Walleye, How was the Launch/Retrive mood at the launch..?...bet that was interesting.... I am bringing my water shoes next time and launch off to the side....small boat...skip the dock and the wait..! Sorry fishing was off....Nice lake to put around on....! hills are wonderfull..
  22. I have fished Hemlock 20+ years,.....Never seen that..!! I agree with all the above,,...Contact DEC...lets hope it is a Falcon scape..or Bald Eagle gash...they are on the lake and will dive on fish ...but it is Rare to see a Laker on top..on Hemlock..Thanks for sharing.....Last year the DEC had survey nets out,...I hope it is that simple..possibly.got snagged in the net......we do not need funky stuff in this watershed..! Bad enough the are Zebras in there..oh,..yeah,..its Monroe County main drinking water.....all the water at Cobbs Hill flows by Gravity from Hemlock...to there...
  23. Here you go,..Launch is a Go..! However there is only One Finger,...! and That has a 3 rail Hand rail...Makes it tough to launch solo.. .. The sign says the dock is Temporary...Lets hope so,.....Good news Bad news,....The Concrete chevrons go out to the end of the Dock,..I paced 18 paces from end of Dock to shore...So,..The big boats have plenty of concrete,...No big drop off as far as I could tell...looks to be 4' + deep.at the end.!Tough part is gettin around the Dang rail.....You will see..!you Need 20' arms Or 3 people to launch a canoe 3 dual axle trailers already in the parking lot,..and no boats to be seen,...Good sign for big boys. Fished 8 am,..nice breeze South>5KTS slight chop...till Noon...Took one 24" Rainbow on the Old School Seth Green...2nd Lead,..30 oz sinker...7 strand wire...( Ya,.Real old school..) bout 60-80 feet down,....She jumped with all that Hardware and Sinker,.... earned all my Respect and a Nice spot in my Coola Trolled E side,..saw decent bait balls....Good News..! I had thought the Zebras had killed that whole bottom food chain and the Sawbellies were next..!..Fish were in the Bait as well.. Also took a 14"Rainbow on the Float rig....( Remember what That is..! ya,,old school again..! )2nd lead down 18oz.60'TL ....bout 30' down....Let that guy go with all the new regs ect...I do not agree with,..but..Both took silver hammered flutters,..bout 2"long All in all,..beatiful day on the Lake,..few boats..nice breeze..clear,..and a View Of Bear Hill...Awsome day on the water..! Tight Lines..!
  24. I took advantage of the calm lake and took the 9.9 h.p hammer down...( well kinda...) over to Ship-Builders and put in 25 FOW and headed NE...Water was calm,..nice green..clear, but not that Ultra clear water when it is in the upper 30' degrees..... Clear screen until 50'..some scattered bait- with fish scattered....47 degrees on top....I was pulling stick baits and one lead core.with an old Fav gold hammered Evil-Eye..three colors out..15lb with 50' mono 12lb leader... Hit 120 FOW with several other boats out past what looked to be a thermal break evident by the 35 yds of weeds, grass,,floating junk ..ect...However...the temp held at 47... Popped the lead-core after spotting some fish on the scope.took a dinner sized Rainbow !! Trolled some more out in big water in a small boat,...no nets flying...tough bite...Fish were on the screen, but out of my reach.....( No downriggers) ..! Looks like time to head for the finger Lakes..!! Short bite this year,..and a windy spring make the choices and days to go,..few....Oh well.... Tight lines
  25. Thanks for the yuks yuks,.... I get the deal,....just never had more than a garage full of beer drinkin buddies to whine to,.....until now.... Fishin is.....you dont know if you dont Go,.....! Tight Lines to all..!
