The next time you are on the water and experience the "wander", send someone as far forward in the boat as possible. See if the wander goes away or calms down. The "wander" is often called "yaw" and can be eliminated or minimalized by moving weight forward. My last boat needed 200 lbs added near the bow and was rock steady after that. The LOTSA Tournament Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the tournaments and picnic! It was a great time as usual! Congratulations to Captain Adam Gearich of Team Diversion II on their LOTSA Saturday Tourney Win! Tim Bromund who was a team member was able to bring in a 26.04lb King caught between Wilson and Olcott in 100 feet of water on a wire diver with a flasher fly combination! 2nd Place winner was Captain Tom Danaher with Team Reel Nauti! Tom found a good concentration of fish in 300 to 350 feet of water in front of Olcott. Tom pulled out one of his secret spoons he painted up black, orange and red. He put it down 90 feet and said it wasn't down there more than a few minutes when a 24.49lb king hit! 3rd Place winner was Captain Marlowe Beis with Team Leviathan! Marlowe's team motto - "Last team to leave the docks and first to return" proved to work well! After going against that rule on Friday and getting on the water "early" at 8:30 they decided to take their time Saturday setting the first line at 10:45! A flasher with a big weenie uv flie took their fish which weighed 24.43lbs! Congratulations! 323 Winners 1st Place Captain Joe Yaeger and team Salmonella leveraging a 32.04lb giant Sandy Brown landed Friday a flasher attomik fly combo! Team Salmonella ended up with a 3 fish box of 72.46lbs! 2nd Place Captain Matt Dunn of Team Streaker with a weight of 70.99lbs! Matt picked up a nice 23lber early on Saturday on a flasher attomik fly combo with first mate Doug Parker handling the rod! 3rd Place Captain Marty Polovick of Team 4-Poles! Marty who is no stranger to the tournament scene had another great showing with a 3 fish total of 65.11! Deckhand Kevin Flaherty was able to land some nice fish with Marty providing expert advice. Congratulations to all the winners! We were actually able to pay out 9 slots in the LOTSA Tournament due to the number of boats! Maybe next year we will finally break the 40 mark! Tournament Update Reminder: This year we are having a 6am shotgun start for both tournaments. You must check in each day with the "Port Boat" from the port you are starting from. This will be done on channel 10 or by cell phone prior to the 6am shotgun start. If you leave port after 6am, check in with your "Port Boat" as you leave port. If you are not checked in, you will be disqualified and your catch for the day will not be weighed. On Thursday July 13 at 7pm, the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar by Master Capt Matt Yablonsky of Wet Net Charters on small boat tactics for summer time King Salmon. Matt has been fishing Lake Ontario and the Niagra River for 17 years, chartering for the last 11 years, 4 of which were as a full time charter business. Matt fishes out of his 21 ft Lund Tyee Magnum which he trailers allowing him to go where the fish are while fishing up to 250 days each year. He has been very successful on the tournament trail with 38 top 20 finishes in the LOC derbies including 2 grand prize and 6 first place division finishes. He is also a 2 time winner of the Niagra Pro Am in 2006 & 2012. He will be talking about his techniques and answering questions on ways you can be successful while fishing from a smaller boat. Captain Marty has been fishing and catching big Walleyes for 33 years on Lake Erie. He is currently fishing out of his 20 ft Starcraft rightly named 4 Poles. Marty fishes out of various ports such as The Small Boat Harbor, Barcelona, Dunkirk and Cattaraugus creek. He has placed many times in the Southtowns Walleye Tournament using his years of experience to consistently land big Walleyes. He will be sharing some of his tactics along with answering any questions you may have to increase your chances of putting more Walleyes in your boat. This is one seminar you don’t want to miss. LOTSA would like to congratulate Mark Kephart who won the $1000 LOTSA prize money for catching the biggest salmon weighed by a club member in the Spring LOC Derby. Mark and his father in law Gene Johnson launched their 19 foot Quintrex center console boat named “Music Maker” from Fort Niagara May 10th and headed west out of the thick muddy water that the Niagara River was pumping into Lake Ontario. While trolling in 80 feet of water just east of the Welland Canal the 23.12 lb king salmon was fooled by a flasher/fly combo on a wire diver rig. The initial run was in excess of 300 feet. Once brought to the boat, the fish tried to weave through the downrigger cables and wrap the other diver, it finally made its way to the net after a 20 minute battle. Congratulations Mark and Gene! Last Thursday May 4th we pulled the LOTSA pens from Olcott Harbor. The fish were a little smaller than normal, but were only held for 17 days this year. The feeders worked well and we thank the Town of Newfane Marina for making sure the feeders were filled every day. Quick update. Our salmon are growing nicely. They were received April 17th at a weight of 120 fish per pound. Last week they were weighed at 66 fish per pound, which is a substantial growth for 1 week. They will be weighed once more just before they get released this Wednesday. The steelhead are growing rapidly as well, however i dont have weights for them right now. Steelhead will be releaded Tuesday. Dont tell the comorants! We will need lots of help removing and cleaning the pens when they are removed this Thursday May 4th at 9:00 am. Please come out and help with this vital part of our fishery. We got notified today that our fish will be delivered at 1:00pm Monday April 17th. If you can make it, please come out and help us get the fish in the pens and move the pens to their final position. The 2017 LOTSA net pen project is well underway. Today a large group of volunteers met at the Town of Newfane Marina to prep and attach the nets to the pen frames. Once the nets were attached, they were placed in the water and readied for our baby fish. If all goes as planned we should be getting our fish some time next week. As in past years the pen project will be receiving 67,000 Chinook salmon and 3,500 steelhead. Help will be needed on the day the fish are delivered, so if you can please come out and help. Bring the kids, this part is pretty interesting to see. They can count the fish as they come down the pipe. Thank you to all that took the time to help with such a worthy cause. It was great to see so many familiar faces and quite a few new ones too. Just a reminder that the Olcott pens will be going in this Saturday April 8th. We will meet in Olcott at the Town of Newfane Marina at 9:00am. Dress warm and bring side cutters to clip zip ties. LOTSA Meeting April 13th On Thursday April 13 at 7pm, the Lake Ontario Trout & Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring a Seminar by Capt Matt Dunn on techniques for spring Salmon fishing on Lake Ontario. Matt has been fishing on Lake Ontario for the past 15 years out of the ports of Wilson and Olcott. The last 4 years Matt and his fishing team have put together some big tournament wins on the west end of the lake. In 2013 they won the amateur division in The King of Lake.2014 saw them take the win in the salmon division in the spring Loc.2016 saw them not only win the spring Loc grand prize they also won the fall Fish Odessey aboard his 27 ft Tiara. In both of those tournaments they also captured the first place award for the largest King caught by a LOTSA member. Matt is also a LOTSA board member where he is on the tournament and picnic committees helping to keep the Lake Ontario fishery at the top of the Great Lakes. As an added bonus Ron Morcio Daiwa pro staffer along with Roy Hryckowian owner of Nick’s Sporting Goods, and Capt. Rich Hajecki will be there telling us about the new Daiwa rods and reels for trolling on the Great Lakes. They will also have them for sale so be sure to bring extra money so you can take advantage of some great deals. I would adjust the lines on the boards like Legacy said earlier. That will get them pulling much better. If the keels are stainless then a weight on the second keel isn't needed. Another thing that I've been doing (which is 180 degrees out from the OEM recommendations) is turning the keels around so that the weight or the "L" at the bottom is facing the boat, not facing away. The thought is that the "L" creates more resistance causing it to pull harder. This may change the measurements from above. Mine aren't exactly 9" and 14" but pretty close. You will have to tweek them a little bit. I agree that the tow line makes a difference too. The old yellow and orange line seems to fray a lot and pick up a lot of stuff in the water causing it to sag. A few years ago I switched to 250lb test power pro and really like it. Its thin and smooth and the releases glide down it nicely. The Amish Outfitters line looks good, but I haven't tried it. Sent from my VS995 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
