My Dad and I are looking to get a bigger fishing boat. One ideal for Lake Ontario, but can also be used for some lakes back in CT. The boat should have 115 or less horsepower, four stroke engine, be no more than 22'ish feet, and have good space for multiple rigger setups. It's gotta be trailer-able, too. Cabinless preferred. Should be on the younger side, maybe like 2010 or later? Getting a new boat is an option, but those can be really expensive. Might be better off getting one used from someone that keeps it in good condition. What's a good place to start looking for boats? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

We caught a 19 lb king today in front of the big dunes west of the plant. But other than that it's been slow. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Hi all, I'm looking to buy some wire rod + reel setups for my dad for Father's Day. I'm in college...what is the best way to get some nice rods and reels for a decent price? Last time my brother bought a setup, it snapped off the rod holder and fell in the water, $300 gone. We only use 2 downriggers in a small 16' boat but I want to take the next steps and get wires out there. Which rods/reels do you use, where can I buy them, and how much will they be? Thanks in advance.

This morning got out at 6:00. One hit after an hour and a half. 90 fow 50 ft down on an orange crush spoon. 19 lb king. One more hit but nothing before coming in at 1:00 pm. We'll be back at it later this evening. Does anyone else have experience with chamberlain releases? We're getting hits but no hookups. I've been tightening them pretty good. -
Got out at 1:30. Fished between 50-120 fow in front of those big terrace bluffs. Didn't catch a thing...tried all spoon colors and a flat lined stick bait. Later at around 5:30 got a little hit. Two more hits to take it off the clip before coming in at 7. All on a pink yellow backed spoon. This was my first time trying chamberlain releases though so it might've gotten tripped too easily. I tightened them after each hit. Will be back at it on 5/30.

Thanks for the report, are the bait more scrattered than a few weeks ago? Also, how is the fishing around Olcott or Pt Breeze? It appears things have improved from a few weeks ago, will be fishing the 3rd week of July hope the fishing stays hot. Which are working best, spoons or spin doctors? thanks G

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to try one of the normal ones, our boat isn't set up to have multiple rods on a single down rigger.

So I have a few questions about these. I've been hearing they work very well. 1. Right now I put my line into a clip. Sometimes it comes off the ball when I'm reeling up slack or putting the ball down. Do the releases help prevent this? 2. Which release is better to use, the regular one or the stacker release? 3. Is putting your line on the release easier than putting it into a clip? Thanks in advance.

Looking to camp a few days and looking for insight
Garyf replied to ChocolateLab's topic in Open Lake Discussion
There is a campsite between Wilson and Olcott. It's called Golden Hill State Park. It's 8 miles from Olcott and 25 miles from Wilson. We camp there annually and fish. There is a boat launch that the state park has as well, all included in the site fee. It costs $18.50 per day. There is also a campground near Wilson as far as I know. Don't know the exact name of it. Let me know if you have any questions. -

Today went out of Wilson about a mile east. Was a little windy. Started about 6:30. Fishing was much better than the past few days which were pretty bad. Marked a ton of bait in close 70-100 fow. Went out to 300 fow looking for kings and no good. Went back in and the fish were still getting marked. Went 3 for 5. Two 6 lb kings and one tiny one. My dad missed a 10 lb steelie when it spit the hook. One of my misses was when I reeled up the line to switch lures, I was looking at the action and thinking "wow, that really looks like an alewife". Don't you know a king came up to my lure and grabbed it? Had I not jerked back the pole in shock it probably would've been landed. Lures used varied, spin doctors and spoons used, only spoons got hit. Black alewife, green glower, a home-refurbished watermelon. We fished anywhere 40 feet down to off the bottom. Sure beats either catching a pen-reared salmon or getting skunked...but we're really just ham-and-eggers.

So we've been fishing on Lake Ontario for the past few days and no luck. Anyone know where else we could try in the area? Tributaries, streams, etc. We just want to catch a few fish. We're at Golden Hill State Park which is east of Olcott. Thanks in advance, just trying to keep busy with all the recent slow fishing.

Pretty much anything. On the extreme ends of 40-120 feet and all between, using spoons and spin doctors. All different colors, greens, purples, blacks, etc. We've been fishing the lake for years. We've tried as close as 100 feet and as deep as 450 feet.
