I'm a middle man. We're between Sampson and Lodi, closer to Lodi. We'll be launching at Sampson for the Derby.

This weekend may be tough going with the amount of logs, railroad ties, chunks of building material, and other wood floating on Seneca Lake. It's a mess.

Seneca is a mess. There is a lot of big stuff out there that could do serious damage to boats.

We already have high water. If we get another 3" of rain, that in itself may be a problem.

I'd be in for a big fish Friday. Not for any lure limits though. Last year we got a 12 lb Brown the Monday before the Derby.

There's a lot of truth in that. We used to go from one stream to the next dipping smelt. Now the creeks are seriously posted.

Last year we couldn't fish the derby. We went out the weekend before and caught a 12 lb Brown. Hope to do that during the derby this year.

I used some kind of trout attractor scent years back. It took a lot of of scrubbing to get that nasty smell off my fingers. I can't say on here what it smelled like, but it wasn't good, I'll tell ya that.
We'll be out there aboard Rod Father, our 21' Thompson Cuddy soft top. We fish out of Lodi or Sampson.
Hopefully we get some warm rain and nice days to get the water temp on the rise by then. I got a report last weekend the temp all around Lodi was 37.5 degrees.

I googled how to get a DOT number. We can go online or call a phone number. The DOT number is free. What it does is give the government yet another way to know what we are doing and where. Of course they have "safety regulations" for us to follow.

I'll go there Monday and find out. Wish I heard this before. I was just there Friday to renew plates on the trailers and motorcycles.

Yesterday I received a call from a fellow charter Captain. He had trailered his boat to town to gas it up. When leaving town he was stopped by the cops for a DOT check. They informed him that because he uses the boat to make money, he must have DOT numbers on his truck.
They also said all these guys pulling landscaping trailers, or hauling amish equipment, or anything where a guy makes money pulling a trailer has to have a DOT number.
So where do I get a DOT number from?

I can remember raising my net and having the water freeze as soon as it touched the air.

An old timer once told me the creek water temp needs to be 50 degrees for smelt to run. Not sure if I believe that. Smelt are few and far between these days.
Another good spot is to run planer boards along the edge of the drop off around the north end of the lake. The shallow water warms quickly and browns move in on the bait. Just follow the top edge of the bowl around the end of deep water.
Later in the day put a dodger and peanut on the down rigger and catch lakers on the deep side of the bowl.
