can't they "turn off" niagara falls to stop the inflow?
-
are you launching out of Dunkirk? Have you been in the Brockton Shoals area? Thats where Im thinking about attacking the post spawn bite this weekend. How deep are you fishing at night? 35-50fow?

Dunkirk, NY Fishing
jigstick replied to Char_Master's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Dude I catch lakers all summer long on Erie. As soon as the walleye bite dies off in the morning I head out for lakers and steelhead. We hook lakers non stop. Actually gets annoying catching them. Sometimes having 2-3 on at one time. I usually cant keep my cowbells on the bottom for more than 10 minutes without picking one up. the Moonshine spoon called "Oscar" is deadly on them as well. If you can get your wire dipsys down to 75-80 ft youll pick them up on those as well. -
Dunkirk, NY Fishing

I fish out of Barcelona for lakers all the time. I usually head east out of the harbor, about half way to Dunkirk. Hit 90fow and drag some cowbells / peanut flys along the bottom, or some Moonshine Glow spoons. You'll be into them in no time. At least this is my experience during the summer. Right now the surface temps in the eastern basin are in the low 50s. So the lakers may be a little more scattered in the water column. -
same here. Ill run sliders or stackers on my deep salmon riggers. But honestly my opinion is if you run anything up high that is an obnoxious color, the steel will hit. Shakers as well.

Five Star Review for Tuna's Reel Trouble
jigstick replied to levelwind's topic in Tackle and Techniques
So I have a question for you guys. And its difficult to explain. I picked up some Okuma Coldwater reels last year to use off my down riggers. up until then I have used the Convectors and Daiwas. When I adjust my rigger rod depth, I would keep the clicker on, and back off the drag a bunch, then drop the ball. Basically using the clicker to prevent the reel from free spooling. Then when I hit my target depth I would tighten down drag again and take up the slack. with these Coldwater reels, its damn near impossible for me to set rods like this. The drag is either 75-100% engaged, or completely off and free spooling. Can this Tuna guy fix this problem? Im guessing its a problem with the drag adjustment wheel or drag discs??? So frustrating for a new reel to be doing this. -

Worst lake Debris What is the biggest, most dangerous, hazardous thing you have seen washed out into the lakes during spring fishing? Mine had to be an iceberg with a whole tree protruding through it about 3 years ago when Lake Erie completely froze over. When that thing went by me I couldn't believe I actually launched the boat.

Too Cold to Get Boat Out Im planning on pulling my boat out of the limestone mine where I have it stored, and towing it up to Chautauqua. I see now that temps at Chautauqua are falling below freezing the next 3 days. Highs in the 40s, lows in 30s overnight. Should I wait? I don't want to deal with ice in my engine. Im thinking that as long as it doesn't stay below freezing for a long period of time that I should be ok. What are your opinions?

New hummingbird fish finder install and having big issues
jigstick replied to bandrus1's topic in This Old Boat
this. I was having similar problems with a Raymarine MFD and transducer set up. I ended up installing a new fuse block right under the dash, and wiring it to the battery bank via 4g wire. Getting adequate voltage right to the unit solved the problem. I now have a Garmin MFD which works well with this setup. -
EPIRB is an "emergency position indicating radio beacon". You can get them at REI, amazon, etc. Some require a subscription. Some don't. Mine doesn't. You buy it, register it with all of your personal info, emergency contact info, boat description, etc. And if you get into trouble you turn it on. and it broadcasts your position to the satellites, which relays all of your data to the coast guard. I have one registered to my boat, and one registered for ground use when Im hunting in the back country. They cost about $250. http://info.acrartex.com/epirbs-are-a-boating-safety-must?ads_cmpid=207670294&ads_adid=11151919534&ads_matchtype=b&ads_network=g&ads_creative=173491364044&utm_term=%2Bepirb&ads_targetid=kwd-19813257841&utm_campaign=&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&ttv=2&gclid=COqtpun0wNMCFcdMDQodwzIHsw Other stuff to consider would be a prop tool, spare prop, duct tape, assortment of screws and bolts, tubes of 3M 4200 and 5200, flashlight, solar charger for your cell phone (goal zero)....these are all things i HAVE HAD to use out on the water.

I use an EV200 and Sportpilot on my IO. It works pretty good. Tracks straight, zig zags, etc. Love it. I had the drive unit back to Raymarine once for new clutch pads, but turn around time was only 2 weeks. I really wish I could find somewhere to have hydraulic steering installed on the boat.
-
EPIRB? Did you check your VHF and make sure its functioning? Flare gun? Spare oil and hydraulic fluid. Can of ether. may seem silly but I keep a hiking water filter on the boat just in case. I figure If I end up adrift, with no way to communicate, I can catch fish and have filtered water until I'm rescued.

Coastal Night Lights blows. Horrible customer service. The mounts are plastic and suck and break. They don't respond to emails for replacements. Ive gone through 4 of their lights. Comparing them to the Rigid ones is like comparing Harbor Freight tools to Snap On. I recommend you avoid Coastal at all costs
-
Rigid offers great customer support as well. they make any type of mount that you could need. Post. Flush. Brackets. Extensions.

I fished some Bayrats last year out of Barcelona for Erie. WHile I do like the quality of the lures, and color patterns, they didn't produce near as many fish as my old go to standard Renosky stick baits. Ill still keep some in the box, but at almost $9-12 a pop, Id rather just buy more Renoskys.

Im using the D Series, not the Duallys. The Duallys would be overkill if you ask me. Mine are the D-Series Wide product number 50211. Shop around online. I think I paid $300 for mine on amazon. The D-Series Diffused product 70251 may be even better for lighting up just the deck area. Much more of a "flood" pattern. I cant imagine two of those D Series not being bright enough for you. how big is your boat? My boat is 22.5ft with a roof and cuddy. The deck is approximately 7ft wide and 6 ft long. I have them mounted on my roof, and aimed downward and slightly outward, and they are incredibly bright. I don't have a good picture of them lit up at night. Also, I use a pair of D Series on my Polaris ranger on our farm. Those two throw light out about 150yds, and probably 50yds wide. I can spot deer a LONG way off. Just make sure you get the floods or hybrids, not the "spotters". the spotters have a much more narrow beam. You want more of a flood so the light is dispersed. The Rigids also come with a wiring harness and illuminated toggle switch. So youll just need some extension wire to get them Installed the way you like them...ie switch at the dash... Here is my boat. its an older pic so the lights aren't installed. But I have them right along the back of the roof, aiming downward and outward slightly. They make my deck GLOW If you really wanted to you could go with the Dually Side Shooters. They have bulbs aiming to the R and L. So that would give you ALOT of light shooting out sideways away from the boat. But Im not sure if it would actually help with landing fish or not. The way you could "cant" them during install may cause those side bulbs to be point more towards the mid boat area, instead of out over the gunwale. they MAY allow you to see your dipsy tips and planer boards better at night though. Just a thought

Ive tried the cheaper LEDs that you can find online. They are bright and work, but Ive found out multiple times that the mounts completely suck and crack when exposed to the sun. Ive scrapped them and bit the bullet on some of the RIGID INDUSTRIES Leds. They are expensive, but bomb proof. Look at the D-Series Floods. My deck looks like a space ship with them on. VERY BRIGHT. and they have any mounting solution you could possibly need. In stainless.

for trolling erie i use 12lb Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon mainline right to a swivel. My dipsy leaders are 14lb flouro.
