Okuma Cold Water questions (leadcore) / riggers / dipsys)

I thought planar boards would slip on braid? It does on my Scotty downrigger clips -
Okuma Cold Water questions (leadcore) / riggers / dipsys)

My Coldwaters came in the mail today. As well as my 15lb Leadcore. I picked up some 15lb clear Big Game to use as backing. Will that work? -
Sorry about the picture. Its the only one I have at the moment. And don't mind the tattle flag point down. Its just flipped that way in the bucket. That is the board I use off of the starboard side of the boat. And when I pull a deep diving Taildancer, Reef Runner, or 30 Jet Diver off of this board, the nose sinks and dive underwater as soon as I put tension on the board.

I think I have the bracket for the front clip in the wrong position. I have it in the lower set or holes. Maybe that's why it's diving.

Okuma Cold Water questions (leadcore) / riggers / dipsys)

Suffix 832 is the "thinner" leadcore? Is that the way to go vs standard diameter leadcore? That should be plenty. I could easily get away with 200yds of backing. -
Im in the process of switching out my Diawa and Magda reels for the Okuma Coldwater ones. Any idea if a Coldwater 303 will fit 5 colors of 15lb leadcore on it? with 15# mono backing? will be used for walleye on lake erie so I don't need 1000ft of total line on the reel. Just enough backing to get my inline planar boards away from the boat. I usually run a length of 150ft to the boards. So if my math is right, I need a minimum of 250ft of backing and 150ft of leadcore (5 colors). that's 400ft of line. I think the Coldwater 303 will hold 510yds of 15lb mono. Do you guys think Ill have enough room?

It is the TX22s that I have. I was just looking at them. I think they are assembled correctly. Mine appear to have a piece of metal running across the bottom. It looks centered though. I put them together like the instructions said. So now I'm not sure why they are diving
-
Ok. I put the weight all the way forward thinking I would need to when pulling these hard diving crank baits or jet divers. I'll try moving the weight back some
-
Last year I picked up some Church TX 22 boards to try out. I've only used them twice so far. Both times pulling a deep diving Reef Runner or Rapala Tail Dancer. And both times the board nosed dived and sank. Took me forever to get the dam thing back in. What am I doing wrong? Do I have the weight too far forward?

If the transducer is below the hull it gets dragged through the water at high speed...stressing the mounting bracket in the process. It also throws up a crazy rooster tail. That's how my Airmar P58 was installed. I read somewhere that it's better to keep the transducer even with the bottom of the hull, or tilted 3 degrees up...so it "skims" the water while the boat is at plane. But I'm not sure if that's right either. That's why I'm asking to see what you guys are doing

So I finished installing my new GARMIN echoMAP Chirp 93SV yesterday. Couldn't launch the boat today to try it out because it was snowing. I'm definitely glad I went with the 9in display. It will be super easy to see from the back of the boat. Do you guys think I installed the transducer in a good spot, and at a got height? I tried to keep it low so that the sidescan sonar would avoid the outdrive. and I think I have the transducer even with the bottom of the hull...but what do you guys think?

Chas Are you trolling with an IO or outboard?
-
wow. thats colder than i expected. did you mark any spawning walleye? They should be in the shallows spawning until it hits 54 degrees. I was hoping to hit the post spawn bite but it looks like its running late.
-
Chas is that a transom mounted transducer? Or a thru hull? are you trolling with an IO or kicker? Im wondering how well these chirp transducers do at filtering out surface clutter. Sometimes I have to use trolling bags which throw some turbulence behind the boat and mess with my current ducer.

So Cabela's gave me a great deal today. 12% back using my Cabela's visa. So I ended up getting the Garmin 93 SV Chirp model for $1020. It does high wide chirp and traditional sonar, as well as side and down vue. It says this transducer has a max depth of 800ft. Hopefully it will hold bottom on Lake O. The deepest I've ever been is 650fow. It is NMEA2000 compatible. I have a Raymarine Evolution 200 sport pilot that uses Seatalk. So I think I need to order a Seatalk-to-NMEA2000 conversion cable. I just talked to Garmin tech support. They seemed to think that I should be able to choose a waypoint on the chart plotter and hit "go" and the heading will shoot over the auto pilot. But I'll have to engage the auto pilot from the Raymarine control head. I was hoping that the Garmin would engage it automatically. How does yours integrate to the autopilot?

So I think I have decided on the Garmin echoMap 73SV or the 93SV. ive talked to a few dealers. They both are identical except for screen size. It comes with a "high wide" CHIRP transducer, and from what I have been told the frequency range of this transducer should give outstanding clarity for targeting fish in the top 150ft of the water column, and hold bottom in over 1000FOW. The cone angle is the best I can get at this price point. I would love an even wider angle but they transducers get crazy expensive to get it. It also does CHIRP downimaging and side scanning, which I don't really need. But I think I may be able to use those functions to help dial in how wide out I run my dipsys and planar boards. Any guys using this unit?

Is that really how it's done?
-
What a headache. I cant seem to locate any 5 or 7 color leadcore. I'm only finding 10 color. Anybody have a source for this stuff?
-
Oh I see how the mix up happened. No. No deep divers off the leadcore. So will I be ok with the Middle sized boards and 5 or 7 color? Even those deep divers made my offshore and church boards ride nose up
-
Like I said prior, I will only be running stick baits, spoons, and worm harnesses off of the lead core. By stick baits I mean Renosky and Bayrats and thundersticks. My current shallow setup tha I'm using is the middle sized OffShore boards and deep diving reef runners and tail dancers. I'm looking to move away from this. And use the leadcore setups I mentioned above.
-
Not sure what this means.
-
I'm not sure which version of the Church boards I have. They aren't the massive ones. They are the same size as my OffShore boards. The OffShore boards only come in one size if I remember correctly. I only plan on running spoons, stick baits, and worm harnesses off the leadcore.

My first walleye trip out of Barcelona is coming up and I figured I would just start a thread and keep it updated throughout the year. Has an been out yet? I'm looking for some surface temps of the eastern Erie basin. If anybody has any please let me know.
