  1. Landed a monster king yesterday. She was loaded with eggs. I'd like to cure these eggs so that I can tie some egg sacs to use while steelhead fishing. How do I cure these eggs so that I can do this? When my buddy gave me some eggs last year they didn't appear to have any borax on them. They were just in a jar. And I spooned them into my netting to make the spawn sacs. But I have no idea how he cured them. Right now I just have the eggs in the fridge.
  2. Best thing about having the wife on the boat...if the fishing action is slow...there's other action to be had.
  3. Can i use any 30-40lb Mono? The only kind I can find locally is Sufix or Big Game.
  4. 30lb Suffix be ok? Not sure if the Gander Mountain or Field and Stream in Erie sell Bloodrun or Fleaflicker
  5. So It looks like Im going to get a chance to get out to Olcott this Saturday! I hope the fleas have died down. My rigger rods are spooled with 15lb Seaguar Flouro Invisx mainline. Two years ago I don't remember having a horrible time with the fleas as long as I checked my rods every 25min or so. Is it worth it to spool up my two extra Diawa 47LC's with some 30lb BIg Game if Im going to be running flashers and flys off of them? If I wanted to run a spoon off 30lb Big Game, should I splice in a flouro leader at the end of the Mono to attach the spoon? I want to keep at least two of my rods with just the Seaguar 15lb Flouro on them in case I want to use them as stackers. People think Im nuts for running light line like I do. But Ive never had a problem with break offs. Im just super anal about my drag settings.
  6. Anybody been out of Olcott the past few days? Any update on the fleas?
  7. What is the proper procedure for paying the harbormaster if you are leaving the harbor to fish prior to them arriving for work? At Barcelona on Erie I just radio the harbormaster around 630am and let him know what truck is mine and that I will pay my lauch fee when I get back to port. Should I follow this same procedure at Wilson and Olcott as well? I usually leave the harbor to get out on the grounds by 5am. Nobody will be there at that time, and I dont want to get a ticket for not paying
  8. You are probably going to be looking at a Raymarine Sportpilot. I installed one on my boat two years ago and it is the best thing I ever did in regards to fishing. Installed it myself in about 5hrs.
  9. Read this site. Tons of info here. Tell us more about what type of gear you have to work with. Do you have downriggers? Dipsy divers?
  10. How far back would you run a spoon? Same distance? For steelhead I usually keep it 15-25ft behind the ball. What is a good starting point for Kings?
  11. correct me if I'm wrong. But the 30 line is basically North / NNE out of the harbor, approximately 8-10 miles out? My NOAA nav chart is showing 140-145 fathoms between the 28.5-30 lines. Thats over 800ft deep. Ive never come across water that deep out of Olcott. Is my chart outdated or something? Im used to being in 600fow at those lines.
  12. Yeah. These are going back. I'm going to pick up some Diawas.
  13. So if I call the Slippery Sinker I will be able to place an order and they will ship it to me?
  14. I would say maybe the first 10ft of wire on Both my rods is starting to get some spiral shaped memory in it. Should I just cut off the affected wire and keep using the other 980ft of it? The rest of the wire looks good
  15. What brands seem to be popular? I see Protroll and Michigan Stinger have E-Chips. Do the Dreamweaver and Luhr Jensen paddles NOT? im confused on which ones I need to be looking at. I would like to pick up atleast two 8in echip flasher. one in a green/glow color, and maybe another in a purple glow color scheme. Maybe blue glow. Im going to run these deeper. and spoons, Spindoctors + fly up higher
  16. if im running cowbells on the bottom I try not to stack that rod. usually the cowbells are firing pretty consistently. Why take the chance of a tangled jumbled mess with a 15lb laker on the other end.
  17. Mine will need respooled next year. I was under the impression that you need to put a little bit of backing on the reel so that the wire doesnt chew into your spool. A few laps of braid or some duct tape. Something along those lines. But maybe im wrong.
  18. Wow. I figured I'd have my downriggers running at 125ft. and the dipsys above 100. maybe I should get some bigger dipsys
  19. I have 12lb balls, and #1 Dipsys with Rings on 30lb 7strand wire. Will this be ok?
  20. how far back from the ball do you run the protrolls? like 15-20ft? Maybe I should have at least 1 or 2 of these Protrolls with me for my Olcott trip. I already have j7-8 Spindoctors. Any brand or color in particular that has a good reputation of being productive? I know my MTN Dew, Crush Glow, and Green/Black Spindoctors produce well. Should I just buy Echip Protrolls in the same color scheme?
  21. The migratory fish that come up from western lake Erie are going to be way way smaller than the local fish. They burn up a lot of fat stores on the trip up to NY water. My experience has always been that the local fish I catch early in the season are the lunkers, and when i start landing long skinny fish it means the migratory ones have arrived. I exclusively target the larger walleye, as I could care less if I limit out. Last year I got hogs all summer long, averaging 8.5-10lbs. With large eyes over 11lbs not uncommon. When i start landing long and skinny walleye, i know the fish from Ohio waters are starting to arrive. This season has been very strange for me as well. This time of year I am usually slaughtering them in 75-90fow. Big fish and little fish. I just dont get it. The last few times I have been out there was basically no thermocline at all. and really really warm water temps. I am at a loss as to why the fish are staying inside this year. Ive been running all spoons and stickbaits. Harnesses just get destroyed with white perch and drum. Im even catching those on magnum sized spoons. Ill be fishing next week. I guess Ill try shallow and see what happens. But that goes against 4 years of logbook data that I have for fishing Barcelona waters.
  22. Imagine a steelhead hitting a spoon with one of these on. Jumping out of the water and dancing like a jerkoff. That would be fun to see
  23. Why would you use on vs the other? Is there a rationale based on where the fish are at a given time of year? Or what depth they are in? Or is it just personal preference? Is it possible to run Spinnys on one side of the boat, and Echips on the other? Or an Echip on a dipsy and a Spinny off a rigger on the same side of the boat? Stacked? Ive never used an Echip Protroll before.
  24. I only hit Olcott for maybe 2 trips per year. I usuly fish Erie. But every time I'm in Olcott I always drop some coin in the Slippery Sinker. I plan on it this time to. But the first day of my trip I'll be heading out into the lake before they open and want to have enough lures to at least get started in the morning. Then I can hit up the Sinker around lunch time to stock up
  25. Other than LakeMichiganAngler.com, FishUSA.com, FranksGreatoutdoors.com…what are some other places to source a good selection of spin doctors, E-chips, and Atomik flys? Im in Pittsburgh, and I can't buy that stuff locally. I want to get set up for my Olcott trip which is in 2 weeks.
