I experienced the same thing with my church inline boards. Used them with het divers and when long lining deep reef runners for walleye. Kept the rods straight up on my rocket launchers. Had horrible time with them wanting to dive under the water. I gave up on them.

The only two times I have ever lost divers is when I used the over hand knot. And I'm not an idiot. I know how to tie overhand knots. I started this post looking for advice on where to find an item. Not to wadge war on the best way to terminate wire. Use what you want. I could care less. I like the crimps and thimble. If anyone comes across the thimbles let me know. If anyone wants to stop at the Slippery Sinker in Olcott and pick me up a few kits I'll gladly compensate you for your time and money to get them shipped to me in Pittsburgh.

Like I mentioned before. I will never use that knot again. It may work for you guys...but not for me. I appreciate the info

My current crimps are what I use to make musky leaders. No idea what size they are. And my crimp tool is a Klein electrical plier set. Definitely not ideal. But those kits I mentioned before were great. My first two wire setups lasted 5yrs before the one went bad. I can terminate with that kit in about 5min. I think I may have found a source for the thimbles. It also looks like a lot of ocean guys use a 1.5in section of SS spring in place of the thimble. Apparently the O rings on the Sampo swivel snaps ride real smooth on them as well. What I don't want is bare wire running through the O ring

Any ideas on what the proper size crimp is for 7 strand 30lb wire? And good crimper?
-
I tied the knot correctly. What I'm looking for is a source for that metal horseshoe shaped tube / thimble. I have the crimps and crimp tool. Im even thinking about using a piece of SS spring if I can't find it.

The wire should get your deeper than braid. If you do go with wire I recommend using crimps to attach your swivels and snaps. You will hear many people say you can tie a knot with the wire. Ive tried it twice, and both times that knot snapped when the fish hit. And no there wasn't any kinks in it. So just do yourself a favor and stick with the crimps.

Last year I had my 7 strand wire snap twice just above the dipsy. The first time was because my buddy popped it like an A-Hole. And the 2nd time it snapped because I decided to try using a knot instead of crimps to attach my Sampo Swivel. Up at the bait shop in Olcott they sell this kit to attach your swivel to your wire. It comes with a few crimps, some shrink tubing, a swivel / snap, and a little hollow metal tube. The wire gets threaded through that tube….thus protecting the wire from contacting the swivel / snap. Does anybody know where the hell I can buy that metal tube? Its about an inch long. Or a place I can buy that kit…other than the Slipperty Sinker in Olcott? I mostly fish lake erie close to the PA line, and don't want to drive 4hrs up to Olcott to buy $5 worth of terminal tackle.

The Scotty releases are super easy to use. Ive never had a problem with one. And adjusting its tension is as easy as changing how far into the clip you pinch the line. I use 12lb balls. But Im also young and in shape. But it really does help keep the blow back down. when you're out trolling…make sure you throw some turns into your track. Don't just go in a straight line. Zig zag a bit. I can't begin to tell you how many times Ive triggered stikes on the turn.

I'm going to try to get out this Saturday from North East or Barcelona. Gonna try for walleye early in the morning. And then switch over to steelies and lakers mid morning. Anybody been hooking steelhead out there?
-
If fleas were not in issue, would 15 pound test be strong enough to land Kings
-
My goal is to always land fish as quickly as possible. And thereby not playing the fish out to the point it can't recover for release. To each his own. I'm glad you like your new gear.

What is the benefit of it? What advantages does it have over a line counter reel?
-
Anybody been fishing for walleye yet out of these harbors? My first trip is this weekend.
-
So you're running a fly reel on a downrigger? What is the benefit of doing that? I think it would cause fatigue with that little handle.
-
Well I decided to go with Seaguar 15lb Abrazx Flourocarbon. It has the same OD as the 12lb Trilene Flouro that I was using. Gonna be trolling cowbells and peanuts for lakers on Erie out of Dunkirk this weekend. I hope it has good knot strength. I figure if it can handle big lakers and cowbells that it should be able to handle Kings as well.
-
What is the best way to join two runs of flourocarbon? I am thinking of just buying two 200yd spools of 17lb test for each of my salmon rods. But I will have to join the two spools together in order to get 400yds on one reel. What knot do you recommend for for this?
-
What size are most people using? The 5.0? or the 4.0?
-
I need to replace my watermelon crystallia cowbells. Where is the best place to order them? I got mine from an outdoor show in buffalo a few years ago. The Hammerhead website doesn't allow you to place orders online.

The reason I don't want to spool with heavy line is because I spend the majority of my time on erie fishing walleye. And they can be very picky about line diameter when the bite is difficult to come by, even when using Flourocarbon. My usual set up was 17lb Flouro on my rigger rods and dipsy leaders, and 12lb on my jet divers and stacker rods. So I'm hoping to get by using something in the middle, like the 15lb Flouro. Fwiw I have never pulled a knot using the Trilene Professional 100% Flouro. When I do fish Olcott I really haven't had a problem with the fleas. My wire dipsys seem to stay pretty clear. And I just check my rigger rods every 15-20min

I fish mostly Erie for lakers, walleye, and steelhead. But occasionally make it up to a Ontario for kings. I need to respool my down rigging rods. I typically use Berkley professional Trilene 100% Flourocarbon in 12lb test. Ands it's worked. I kept 2 rods spooled with 17lb for my occasional King trips. I was thinking about buying a 2000yd spool of 15lb so I can do all of my rods with the same Lb test. Is 15lb too lite for kings?

sell the scottys and buy cannons : ) -
Fish Hawk must be using Apples technique. Release a tiny little update every year and capitalize on people who always must have the "latest and greatest".
