  1. Reviving old planer board line I've got a pair of big jon planer board reels, likely with the original line on them. the releases don't slide worth a darn down the line. I was trying to think of something I could put on the line to make it slick so they'll slide. I thought of armor all, tire shine, silicon spray, olive oil. just curious if anyone has had any success with any of those things or with anything else. thanks.. What if you soaked the line in a bucket of water and fabric softener? IDK. Just a thought. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  3. Trolling with a larger engine always creates problems, be it loading up the cylinder heads, too fast, vibration, etc. If you do not want to go with a kicker, a pair of trolling bags is probably your best option. They serve many purposes for trolling. First, they slow you down even more, allowing you to bump up the RPM's to achieve the proper speed, and at the same time allowing the engine to hopefully not load up, or not as bad. Second, trolling bags aid in keeping the boat straight and well heeled in the water in wind and waves. I understand your hesitation in putting more in the water and adding another stress, but it won't take long to get accustomed to having them in. Last note: run them midship on each side to get them out of the way for setting up and for netting. Guys troll big outboards and big V8 inboards all the time with little loading up. 4. We run 30lb mono exclusively for the riggers. We get some build up but not real bad all the time. A method I have been using to remove fleas quickly goes like this: when is see a bunch coming up the line I am retrieving, I lay the line in the water(boat still moving at trolling speed) so just the first few inches of the rod tip is in the water. I then pull the rod tip up out of the water as if I were setting the hook. This action seems to"cut" the fleas off that section of line. Repeat as needed. If the bait is too close, you may yank it out of the water, so be prepared. You may not be able to use this technique at this point in the line. No bunching in at the first eyelet, no nasty fleas on board, and no nasty smell on your hands. Good luck. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. On the eastern end, there are multiple islands with coves, protected ponds, etc. that would work well for overnighting. As a matter of fact, I can think of a couple spots where overnighting is very popular. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. I will be on the water tomorrow. Let you know how it goes. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. I am not sure if it's any indication, but on the lake out of Henderson, we have been seeing fewer fleas the past two weeks. What we do have stuck to our lines are crusty and dead. That's on the 30lb mono gear. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  9. When the wind cooperates, there are numbers of salmon to be had up here.
  10. My wife and I decided to buy a cottage at probably the worst possible time, but we did it anyway. We had three young kids, two of which in daycare, and a home mortgage with a home equity line of credit on it already, student loans and a car payment. My advice: mortgage it. If you find it is killing you financially, sell it. Waterfront hardly ever goes down in value They ain't making no more. It always appreciates. Home equity is tricky, where a mortgage separates it from your actual dwelling if **** hits the fan financially. We have been in our summer/seasonal place six years now, and have not looked back once. Best decision I ever made. Good luck. I hope it works out for you. 12. Great boat. I run the next size up (231 WA) in this hull. Mine is an I/O. Very solid hull. I am pretty sure this is the first year they went to no wood construction. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Not really. Water is "stable" right now. Not going up or down. If it has dropped it is not really noticeable.
  14. I am not a fly fisherman, but wouldn't it have been cool to tie up some flies, and fly fish for eyes? Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Thanks, Kevin. Reason I ask is, I took one in Chaumont Sunday whose stomach was practically empty. Matt

  19. As far as what I have heard, all of the launches in the eastern basin are open, with the exception of Sackets Harbor. They all have high water, and tall boots are a necessity if you want to stay dry. In terms of launching a bigger boat, I don't think you will have any trouble. There is plenty of water to float it at the launch. By the time you are standing on the dock with the boat floating off the trailer, you could be in five to six feet of water.

  21. Rent something in the eastern basin, especially if your stuck to the September time frame. The walleye fishing has picked back up by then, the king's are staging and bass is good too. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. SSW wind this week is pushing even more water into the eastern basin too. Not good.
  23. Seeing how the "water pump" was replaced in 2016, there is only one season on it. With that in mind, it should not have gone bad already. It might be worth piece of mind to inspect the intake, the duct work from the pump, etc to see if it is clogged. A year old water pump service should not have failed so badly, unless you run it in some serious muck, or something is clogged, disconnected, etc.
  24. A couple things to keep in mind running four riggers. 1) Make sure you have the same amount of cable on all four. Just like the spools on your reels, how much line/wire is on there affects the accuracy of your counters. If one is short, it will not run in the water column where you think it is. 2) To run four, the two outside weights have to be spread way out away from your middle two. The long booms will do that, but a pain and dangerous to operate. We put wingers, or planers just above the weight of our outside two riggers. We run four almost exclusively, and almost never have a tangle, not even in sharp turns running structure in eastern lake Ontario. The only time I have seen a tangle is when we unknowingly had a wire way shorter than the other three.
