Sold / Closed 22ft 1987 starcraft islander
guffins fisherman replied to underthefloat's topic in Boats for Sale
Just a side note. With all the drama in the classifieds lately, I just wanted to vouch for this guy as a seller. I have bought from him in the past. Very straight forward and honest guy. He fishes this boat on a regular basis. He knows his stuff. If I were in the market for a boat, I would have no reservation in looking seriously at his rig. I had a Johnson 115 that would do that, then run fine, bog down, run fine. Turns out the new coils I had put on weren't plugged in tightly, and were only making a solid connection intermittently. Arcing bad. My bet your Merc is doing the same thing, or a coil just went bad altogether. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Word is the water is still on the rise. Chaumont state launch last I knew was open, but waders were needed. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

All the launches up here are under water. Usable, but under water. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

It all depends on the detail you require, and the detail the gps provides. The river bottom is VERY variable. There are so many shoals and rock piles that most are not marked. If you have the Navionics chip in your Lowrance, it should have the detail you need if the chip covers the river.

Perch and SMB are not terribly difficult to find in the St. Lawrence River. Unfortunately, neither are the shoals. If you don't know the river, have a good map/GPS on hand.

Chaumont Bay Walleye Advice
guffins fisherman replied to FishingFool34's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I was out in the Chaumont bay last night, and unless my eyes are deceiving me, the navigational buoys are not out there yet. The marker buoys next to the state launch are in though. The only bouy you really need is the one for Johnson shoal. Just a heads up. -
What if the water goes down to the point that the spawning area dries up to the point it can not sustain pike and muskie fry that are stuck there? That sounds possible this year, as well as the water receeding. I am really interested to see how this season shapes up. Some say to skip the bays, and just head to the deep water haunts. Some say it will be hotter fishing in the bays with all the water to play around in. Going to be interesting. One thing is for sure, be careful of the floating and partially submerged crap out there. It is astounding the amount of stuff that has flushed out of the rivers, and floated off the beaches and is just bobbing around out there. Logs, whole trees, tires, docks, picnic tables, etc.

Water Levels in Dexter/Sackets Harbor.
guffins fisherman replied to Todd in NY's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Guys, and gals. I was out on Chaumont bay yesterday. I gotta tell ya, be careful out there. There is so much crap floating, bobbing and suspended out there it is scary. I backed the throttle all way off and idled around. I know everyone is excited to chase eyes, but this high water is floating everything off the shores, and the variable winds are taking it every which way. I saw a METAL pipe sticking out of the water today where it shouldn't be. I saw a tire bobbing around. I saw a log big enough to take your lower unit off if you were on plane. The guy pumping gas into to my boat spoke about complaints of a dock floating free. This opener will see some stranded boaters if we are not careful out there. Be careful out there this weekend. -
Ok Folks, Where are ya headed for the walleye opener

I know NYSDEC has been doing a lot of work with the sturgeon population in the lake. I believe BRB and the river are a big spawning ground for them, which would explain the nets in the spring of the year. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Are you sure about that. I just finished my course and am going through the final stages of the application process. I have not seen or found anything that says a TWIC is no longer required. Could you tell me where you got that info. I may ask my school to reimburse me the $125 if it is not needed anymore. Matt. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I just finished mine online. Marinerslearningsystems.com. I think all the local courses are done for now, but you can do the online at any time. The only time you have to leave your computer or dining room table is to sit for the proctored final exam. PM me if you have any questions. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

"1: Chartering is NOT for retirement = you don't charter your income building years to build up a retirement fund AND Retirement is for chartering (Think of this on so many levels----tax brackets @ different ages/income brackets ---Paying into social security for 30 years on the books 1st. ---Cash income in life when certain income limits are in play---winters off OR down south working boats in tourist locations ETC..........." This is so true. I work for probably the largest, busiest charter business in Henderson Harbor. None of the captains in that outfit rely solely on the fishing to pay the bills. To what extent, I cannot say, but I will say all of the captains I know have other jobs, and fish HARD when the weather permits. I too had dreams of starting my own business and working this glorious job. On the water every day, meeting people, doing something I love and making some money at it. Those things are all still true, but it takes catching lightening in a bottle to put them all together. One of the first things I realized is that anybody can go out and get their license, buy a boat, put up a sign and call themselves a business. The tricky part is making it stick and actually being able to sustain that business. Putting together an experience nice enough to entice people to come back year after year, and to create buzz, is the hard part. My advice to anyone is twofold, even though I have limited experience: First, work for someone for a few years to get your feet wet, and see how a fishing business runs. The devil is in the details in EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING you do to be successful. Second, if you want to jump in on your own, start out part time. Use up weekends, vacations etc. from your real job to ease yourself into the grind. I haven't been in the business long enough to pretend to talk about the state of the lake, so I will leave that part to the many more experienced people on this forum. Good luck, and I hope anyone starting out does well. It truly is a great job.

Yup. Still there. There is another further down the shore in Adams Cove. It is a $5.00 honor box ramp. Another ramp exists at Guffin Bay campground/RV park on the opposite side. Tougher to back down. Not sure of cost. Sent from my XT1585 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

for sale : usa Wanted: walleye boards
guffins fisherman replied to moonfish's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
I run both, the walleye boards and the 22's. I feel like the 22's plane out to the side better, making for a better, more organized(less tangles) spread. I always run 6-8 lines, with 6 being planer lines. I wish the walleye boards would get further away from the boat like the 22's do. They just seem to lag more, is all.
