Henderson Harbor
greenboatluke replied to Scalloper 1's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the report! You did real well! It was rough out there today. Took a while to get out. Picked up a mature king on 450 copper. And dragged a tiny laker on meat on a rigger I found when we pulled lines. Didn’t fish long. Temp was 48 down 100 fished over 130-150. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

I use 13 lbs torpedo weights and have manual riggers. Same situation as above. Less blow back. Around 10 ft at 100 feet out. Also use a x4d. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Launched out of Stony this morning. 2 browns, 1 steelhead, 1 laker. 4-6. Riggers for all but steelie which came on a diver. Found bait near the mountain in 95 fow. Started there, it was 49 degrees down 100, when we got out a little further. Ran a high program with most marks in the 60-95 fow. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Also, while we’re on the topic, I buy spools of 300’ (scotty’s i think) downrigger cable, so that I can cut off pigtails (or frays) and re-terminate. That way I don’t worry about limiting my depth. Speaking of that, I rarely have 180’ of cable out, but it’s nice to have extra on the spool if you hang up on bottom. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Both BikiniBottom and Troutman87 on this site make fish shaped (like shark brand) and torpedo weights respectively. I have both, they both track well and minimize blowback. My sharks weigh less than my torpedoes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Spring Brown Trout on Chinook Divers 1/13

Could you use a downrigger rod? Or would it be better to have a rod with faster action? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
I’ll second Lucky in saying that float fishing is probably your best bet. Do a search for float fishing (or centerpin rigging, not that you need a pin to do it). Or PM me and I’ll try to help as much as I can. I started float fishing (centerpinning specifically) a few years back and even use it in the Catskills. It’s a dynamite way to present your terminal tackle. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Welcome to the site. I’ve been at it for a little while, but am no expert by any means!!! I have a cottage on the east end and fish as much as possible with 2 little ones. Fish both big lake and tribs. Also, moved to the Hudson valley years ago and fly fish for wild rainbows and browns in the Catskills. As far as the tribs go, *I feel*, that the Googans that show up (from all over) for the run and subsequent early steelhead are more to blame for the feeling about fishing in the tribs. If stream fishing is what you got, then fish on buddy!!! This site has tons of great people and they are willing to help and share info. Try to be specific about your questions and what you’re looking for. What kind of tackle are you using? Spinning, fly gear, pin? Float fishing, bottom bouncing, lures? Honestly, it’s all crazy and can keeps me up at night! [emoji23] As far as what to do in between trips, practice tying knots and getting your rigs ready. Can’t catch em without line in the water! It’ll speed you up and save a little frustration when on the water. Lastly, look into local streams that are stocked or hold wild fish. I’ve found that working flowing water in the Catskills has definitely helped me manage what I do on bigger systems of the lake. I look at it as practice for the “big time” Good luck, tight lines! Depends on the day and where the temp is. 450 and 300 will be roughy 25-30’ apart vertically. Early season the 450 doesn’t go out most of the time. 300 can take steelies or browns higher in the thermocline later in the season. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I only have 2 copper rods on my boat. 450 color is natural copper and 300 is nickel finish. Both take fish. There’s anywhere from 30-50’ of leader off the copper, so I don’t think the finish matters that much. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Sold / Closed Penn 309 and Penn 350 (both with lead core)

Weird thought... Has anyone ever attached 2,3 or 4 colors to say 300 (or so) copper to achieve depth and get the action of the lead core? Would it even work? Sort of like using a SWR on a downrigger. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

One other thing about bags... they help to stabilize the boat in chop. The rocking and rolling can be diminished (to a degree) when they go in the water. I’ve been using the small Amish bags on my 18’ trophy in the back 3/4 (like mentioned) off the sides for years. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
