  1. Your right I have been respooling copper for a week now.
  2. Bloodrun 45# 1000' spool. Its smooth through guides doesn't kink unless you do something wrong and spools great.
  3. I agree with SK I usually run mine from 13'-20' behind ball. Its the fishing this year, the kings have been very finiky about what they want. Some weeks its spoons other times SD/fly. Keep at it and eventually you will run into the lack that wants it.
  4. You should be fine with 30's on riggers. I used to run the Daiwa 27's til I switched everything to Okuma reels. There will always be that one or 2 major fish that will make you think your gonna get spooled but you just have to play your drag right and you should be OK.
  5. Not to stir the pot but I was out Saturday off Irondequoit and didn't last an hour. I run 30# on the riggers plus wire plus leadcore and all was covered in 15 minutes including the rigger wire and probe. Its just that time of year as if we haven't had enough to deal with already. It happens every season, some worse than others and this is one of the bad seasons for them. Usually a couple of weeks and it disappears. Good luck cause my mate said we aren't fishing due to it. Pulling boat and heading to Erie for eyes and a stop by Cabelas on the way.
  6. In my opinion the Okuma 8'6 DR cold water rods are mint. I had all Cabelas rods before this and if you don't look at them in person you really don't know what your gonna get. I had the telescoping rods in Med heavy and they were lime a wet noodle so use those for my trout program now. I also use Shimano Galore roller rods for all my wire. Those rods are no joke just crank on them all you want and they never give great buy for the money. Maybe switching to all Telora rods next year in 8'. Good luck
  7. Well to say the especially being the captain, the first trip out every season I get sick. I think its the nerves of the "what its" but my mates all seem to count on it or we seem to have a crappy season. They have taken video and posted it as well cause its the only time anyone will ever see it all season long. They find it funny I just seem to get myself ready for the harassment that follows.
  8. That is an awesome video. I actually remember fishing in that with my uncle and gramps which was the last one he ever did. I even caught a glimpse of our boat leaving the dock. Memories are fun to relive.
  9. Looks like it was a good time. Next year I am there. Wish I could have done it this year but all new equipment so I am still tuning things in. Great pics Ray glad to hear you had a good time.
  10. Usually 10' or more. I run mine from 15-20' behind ball but I have seen people run them as far as 40' back. If you see the fish streaking and riding along then something needs to be changed, speed or length cause it already got there attention so now you just need to dial it in. Then there are those days when it doesn't matter they just destroy it regardless. Good Luck
  11. I should have known something was up when I looked at the phone this.morning and saw a text at 1130 asking if we were still on for today. It was to early to put 2 and 2 together for me. Plus on top of that I opened boat up to find my cuddy with 8" of water in it. Thought it was from the rain but it was dripping all day finally tore the toilet out to find my pump for the baitwell had a crack in it and was leaking pretty good. Luckily there was a valve to turn off but it took 2 hours to get it done. The good day of fishing made it all worth it cause its been a while.
  12. Why aren't my pics uploading to my post. Can anyone tell me if I am doing something wrong
  13. Well my plan of getting an early start(530) was blown out the door due to my 2 guys party in to much last night and showing up til 8am today but we still went out so I can vent on them a little bit cause they had no place to run out in 200' of water. Anyhow we went 14 for 16 today with 2 bonus kings. We struck gold just east of hedges off the point from 160-200. We had a very mixed bag of browns, steelhead, Lakers and the 2 kings. Everything took fish today, riggers with spoons, wire with spins and fly's, leadcore and all the copper(300,400 &500). When the king hit he surprisingly hit the leadcore over 160fow and screamed out 400' on the first run then another 200'. Got it in and it was just shy of 23# then the rigger took the other just after. All in all it was busy till wind shifter around 2 so we packed it in. Back out this week for more fun.
  14. You think a 600 is bad Thursday I went with a buddy of mine and he ran an 800 and it actually caught 2 Lakers. He looked at me when the rod fired off the release and said what you waiting for and I said an electric winch cause I won't touch it.lol
  15. Not to try and sway you but I am not an Evinrude guy at all but I just put twin 200HO E Tecs on my boat and I have to say I am quite impressed. They sip the fuel and as for power they are unbelievable. On my previous boat I had that new 4 stroke 150 from Mercury and that was amazing as well but nothing like these 2 I have now. With both in gear I am trolling at 2.0mph which is perfect cause I just have to give it a little here and there to keep my speed.
  16. Definitely not good news. That being said though the good news is every motor manufacturer is offering some great incentives but in the end isn't gonna be cheap.
  17. Well an Opti is a direct injected motor. I know Rick at power marine and he is a great mechanic. The problem with buying a motor the way you did is storage. Seals dry up and things shrink and if it wasn't properly winterized with the ethanol gas in the injectors that can cause serious issues. Regardless that Option is still cheaper to fix than a Yamaha or Honda. I purchased a boat this spring which had 30hours on each power head and after a month dumped $45,000 on 2 new E Tec's cause they were not taken care from the winter plus the previous owner left 85 gallons of bad gas in it to start. See what he says but when it comes to any direct injected motor the repairs aren't usually cheap. Good Luck
  18. Yes you are seeing it right. James on board Top Gun took it yesterday morning and yes part of the Pro am
  19. Welcome.to the world.of salmon fishing. Now you have to open the wallet a bit cause its a whole.different world of.tackle. Good luck
  20. A big thing to remember is with a full moon out if it is clear it draws the bait to the surface. The kings will not follow due to the temps being out of there comfort zone. Never the less I haven't found that its a bad bite cause I usually look for those rogue salmon that like to hang by themselves. Either they bite or just watch it go by. Just my opinion.
  21. Well from experience I would say that you either have a high speed model or to voltage going to it. The high speed models are fast (250'per minute) but check the voltage at your plug and make sure its 12volts. If not any of the above I would give Fish307 a call and ask them, they know these riggers in and out.
  22. I have been sitting back reading and not saying much about it but when he mention about fighting smallmouth bass versus salmon I had to say something. Only because my family has charted from Lake Ontario to Seneca Lake so I have been around it my whole life. I decided to give the bass fishing circuit a try and went out bought my rig all outfitted out with everything. I fished the circuit for 10 years and I was good at it, cashed several thousand dollars in tournaments and even got my 2 girls involved but still had that itch to grab a rod that was screaming 5-600 feet of line out with a KIng Salmon on the end of it. There is no better feeling in the world which I have been as well. Been to Argentina for brown trout and also to Montana and yet the King Salmon rules. Everyone has there thing but at the end of the day its fishing which we are and should be blessed to do and respect. Personally if the end of my rod is bent and something is pulling on the other end of that line I am HAPPY.
  23. I would guess if the cylinders just needed a good honing with replacing everything(rings, bearings, cam and seals) it could be about $1500 for the parts and then what ever the labor rate at the shop is. 5.7 a common motors, the cost by time all is said and done it might be better to replace them with a remanufactured motor. A guy I just met just paid $5300 for a remanufactured 5.7 with a 3 year warranty and he did the work himself. It depends on your budget.
  24. I agree with that. Any engine with 4000 hours is bound to have some blow by but if its excessive it might be time for an overhaul not so much a replacement, although these days its just as affordable but I like using the original block cause replacements don't always fit the same. Just rebuilt a Volvo inline 4 for a friend that had about 4000 hours on it and putting back was very easy.
