A year ago (11/24/23), I spent the day with my dad, shooting my biggest gun buck later on. Two days later, my world was forever changed. I miss him every day. Yesterday (11/24/24), a year later, I went to the same spot, thinking of him the whole time. After seeing two other bucks, this one stepped out behind a doe. I believe something higher was working just like it did last year. I wish he was here to celebrate. I miss his texts, advice and love. This one’s for you dad. 120 yards with arrowhead custom smokeless muzzleloader that I put together over a few years. Two steps is all he took. IMG_3660.mov

Last Friday I went to see my dad and do a little work for him and right away I knew things weren’t right. He could barely walk and when asked to go to the hospital or urgent care he declined and said take the kids home and go hunting. After a late start I got set up and reached for my phone to text my father and plead once again to go to the hospital. He declined again and ten minutes later I had a few does and a smaller buck come out and make a scrape. As I watched him a doe came out and behind her in the brush I noticed another buck. He came out and proceeded to chase the doe away from me from ninety to one hundred and sixty yards. First shot with the new smokeless muzzleloader I built last year and he dropped. At 4:10 pm I called dad to let him know, he’s always the first call and was very excited. Dad fell on Sunday and laid on the ground for over eight hours before my sister got to him. Later that night we learned his pain and inability to walk was due to tumors on his spine, lungs and liver. I have to believe there was some intervention or a higher power that put that deer in front of me. I put very little time into gun hunting over the years because I love hunting with the bow. This was the first descent buck I have ever shot at. He was the reason I built the new gun. I added dads, my uncles and kids initials to the bolt handle to remind me of the special people in my life and those no longer here. As of now we await dads prognosis. He has had six CAT scans and four MRI’s and my heart breaks as the man who’s taught me everything I know is struggling. I always thought I was the best at everything I did whether it was hunting , fishing, or any of the sports I played growing up. I now realize he was the best, as he gave me the best spots when we went hunting and always was a little slower to grab the pole when we trolled. With so much uncertainty surrounding him right now I know I won with him as my dad.

Last night was one to remember. The last five years I haven’t gotten much due to two shoulder surgeries and the birth of my children. Kids have been pretty sick for the first few years but last night the wife said go. Even though I didn’t shoot one I managed to rattle in seven different bucks including a mature eight point(twice). He was primed to kick some a$$. No shot due to my poorly trimmed shooting lanes but a great night nonetheless. 8a Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Last night the Mennonite up the street gave me a call to come see his buck. He’s a great guy and has had some tough luck this season. He went to his food plot yesterday afternoon and was there for a short time 30 mins when this guy walked out. He was concerned it was not big enough or wouldn’t meet everyone standards. Got me to thinking about why I hunt. While I have seven on the wall do we take the fun out for us and other people when they ask a question like that? So after a late start due to having shoulder surgery everything finally came together last Friday. It took me until 41 to get my best buck and 44 to get a perfect doe. While I love to hunt and fish this takes the cake and puts a lot into perspective. The surgery was done so I could do this. I enjoy reading all of this everyday and love all of your stories but must admit these two make me forget about the woods and water. Nothing better than being a dad. They cane in to five six yards he ran and stopped at 33 behind a tangle of trees. No shot I could throw up. Does moves on and so did he Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

After five months of rehab I got the ok to use a crossbow. So with the help of a friend who gave his up so I could hunt the final two weeks I am back in the woods. Ali will never think of a crossbow in the way I once did. They have there place and for those of us who need them to stay sane and get back into the woods it’s a lifesaver. While I probably won’t get anything I am happy just to be out there and have the chance to hunt this season. I read this every day and while I here some rejoice and some whine and act like a BABY because they haven’t killed. Have your season taken away something you love to do and maybe you see things differently. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Checking my camera with my son and five very nice bucks these are the three biggest. I had shoulder surgery in June for a torn labrum, rotator cuff and bone shave to open the pocket so no hunting for me only camera watching. Anyone thinking of having shoulder surgery like this it horrible worst pain ever even four months later. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Helped a neighbor with this guy tonight. Came running to the corn without a care in the world. Sixth buck taken this week around the house and from the beginning of bow until today only three does. Bucks on camera are looking pretty bad. This guys backbone was showing. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
