  1. Is there a good way to wash any possible scent (sunscreen, human scent, etc.) and other dirt and grime off of your lures? Could you use hunting scent-free soap or any soap that gives an added beneficial scent effect like WD-40? I want to wash my lures but I'm not sure if the fish will smell the soap. Also, I want to be sure that the soap won't do anything to the paint/tape on the expensive lures. Thanks, GeckoGuy
  2. That's 3 fish per person, so 3fish x 3people = 9fish limit
  3. Northwoods Wholesale Outlet. You have to call to get the pricing, but they are usually the cheapest unless you buy used.
  4. Splicing line every 100ft is probably a marker they use to determine how much line they have out. This could create weak points with more knots. If you have a line counter reel, this is not required. The way you set this up should be fine as long as the reel has a line counter. You mentioned a leader, but most people just attach the wire directly to the dipsy and put a 6-10ft leader behind the dipsy.
  5. With the heavy westerly blow we are having right now the fishing "should" be decent. The fish might tell you otherwise though. You never know.
  6. Try putting it on a spoon for scale.....
  7. I don't know about the size, but I have heard that you shouldn't use coastlocks for spoons. Instead, you should use a rounded snap like a duo-lock snap. Just what I've heard and I'm not sure why, but it works for me.
  8. For flies, we hung up a pool noodle on our boat and we stick the hooks into the noodle and hang them down. The skirt part of the fly hangs down and stops at the loop. It's easy to see all of your flies and you have easy access. They really don't get tangled at all. The line also doesn't get loops in it from wrapping it around the noodle like some do.
  9. I use the Lure Jenson Dipsy divers, and they work just fine for me. Colors that have worked well for me are chrome and green, but I know many people swear by the clear divers. I used to be confused on wire, so just to clear it up, dipsy setups are stainless wire with a line counter reel, while copper wire is a whole different setup that does not involve a diver, very similar to leadcore. Just wanted to clear that up to be sure you don't buy the wrong wire. I would definitely buy some dipsy setups before copper or leadcore. As for flasher/flies, start with some ProTroll or Spindoctor paddles in green colors and matching A-Tom-Mik flies. Good luck!
  10. I wouldn't recommend Mexico, it's a bit of a ride to get to the deep water. Fair Haven would probably be your best bet.
  11. x2 on the cowbells. Also try Spin N Glows as an alternative to peanuts. Whenever we were having trouble with the popular species (Browns, salmon) we could always go out and catch lakers in the deep. It just sucks to have to wait for the ball to come up from 150 feet down with our slow downriggers...at least they aren't manuals
  12. I use a surgeon's loop and feed the whole fly and hooks through the loop.
  13. Can I suggest something? Bottom bouncing could also refer to a drift/slow troll weight used to walleye fish, so that could cause some confusion. Also Flashers and flies should be added.
  14. I wouldn't fish with light line right now, the fleas were clogging up my dipsies on thursday.
  15. I attach my release to the weight as usual with a pinch pad. Never had any problems. The belly in the line from the rod to the release most likely gives you enough clearance from the probe. But your way seems to work for you and if it aint broke don't fix it.
  16. This year has been a mostly downrigger bite for us, so that could be a factor.
  17. That's something we would be unlucky enough to get caught on. Thanks for the heads up. Keep your downrigger drags loose!
  18. We went out in front of the plant and east. We marked TONS of fish but could not get a single rod to fire. 130ish FOW was where we had the most marks. They were higher in the water column, around 30-60ft down. Lots of big salmon marks too. Looks like they were pretty tight lipped after yesterday's blow. Hopefully it will be better this weekend.
  19. Right now there are some heavy (around 15 knot) winds out on the lake according to the NOAA marine forecast and the waves earlier were 4 feet. Does anyone know what these winds will do to the kings in the Mexico Bay area? Looking to go out tomorrow and hoping these winds aren't going to shut down the hot bite we've had the last couple days. Obviously nobody knows for sure but does anyone have a guess? Thanks
  20. check out Torpedo Divers. They are like snap weights but according to their dive charts they get down very deep. I have never used them myself but I am thinking about investing in them as I do not have copper either. http://www.torpedodivers.com/torpedo.asp Their charts are only accurate with wire or braid though.........
  21. Fished the afternoon around 2-8 in 120-150fow in mexico bay and to the power plant. We went 2 for 4 on the kings. I was only running three rods though. Released 2 decent salmon estimated 12-15lbs, had one get off right at the boat and 1 got off from slack after the downrigger released. 3 of the hits were on F/F on a 100 rigger. Great day, the lake was calm and the sun was out. The salmon are definitely here in mexico bay.
  22. Looks like a ferry
  23. When running a flasher/fly for kings, do you run a lighter (12-20#) fluorocarbon leader before the flasher, or do you just tie it onto the main line (30# mono). Is a leader just adding a weak link to your setup or does it make a difference?
  24. Great as it has less blowback than thick stainless cable. Don't use it if the lake you are fishing has water fleas. Fleas clog up the braid and makes it useless. You also cannot use a black box for positive ion charge with braid, which could be good or bad.
