  1. It definitely isn't a "numbers" lake and in the last 20+ years I have been fishing here I have only landed a limit of eyes in one day a handful of times but have had a couple memorable nights where I have landed 6 or more large eyes but that is rarely the case. A typical night of casting for me might be one walleye if I'm lucky and have been blanked more times here than any other lake I fish regularly but the quality and proximity are what keep me coming back.
  2. I used to like fish formula but since I usually have sambucca in my flask during ice fishing season I have rubbed a little of it on my lure and it seemed to work the few times I didn't have my scent with me. Lakers and rainbows love the stuff, they must have Italian roots.....
  3. Very nice fish. I bet the little guy enjoyed the trip as well
  4. I'm not crazy about bass fishing but I do love catching smallmouths when I get into them. If it weren't for those bronzebacks my walleye opener would have been almost fishless but the bass kept the net wet all night long with a 5# smallie as well.
  5. I kayak fish Lake "O" often and my advice on the big lakes is to Always wear a pfd, make yourself very visible to other boaters with a flag or bright clothing and check wind reports before heading out there, especially if paddling off-shore beyond 1/2 mile. Once the wind picks up it can be difficult to paddle back to shore with big waves or winds.
  6. Here are some pics from the night. I forgot about the 1 largemouth as well in front of Lader Creek. The smallie I'm holding had to have been close to 5#. We dropped a sad total of 5 fish between the 3 of us and 1 straightened out my friends treble hook.
  7. We hit otisco last night and hit an 'eye on the first cast. A 24"er. Smallmouths kept us busy after that until I caught a short eye, smallest and only non legal walleye I have ever caught out of Otisco at 16". I was using large husky jerks and friends were using xraps and all caught fish. Headed back in at 3 am. Great night for fishing but of course the fish only bit during each brief shower then shut off whenever it calmed down.
  8. we'll be out there in a canoe
  9. Thanks, I almost beat it with a 29" I caught trolling in my kayak last summer off Stony Point but was still nothing like that noodle rod fight! I had to climb down a safety ladder for a gill grab since we didn't have a net. My hand went through the gill and into it's mouth and gashed a finger on a tooth. The entire thing was an experience I will never forget.
  10. I am a firm believer in scents and my friends will agree since they don't own them. I am almost always the first to catch a walleye and after the 2nd my tube makes its way around the boat. Use it ice fishing too.
  11. Really weird that this question came up today since it was 13 years ago today when I landed my first trophy walleye which happened to be while casting for browns off the long pier coming out of little sodus. I had 3 boats watching me land it with my 10 1/2' noodle rod with 6 lb test and a 3/8 oz little cleo. They all offered me all the fish on their boats for this sow. Just happened to be on opening day of walleye season. You could say it was a pretty lucky day for me haha
  12. For what it is worth since I have never fished for walleye in the bay, I asked Brendan at Screwy Louie's last year about it and he said the walleyes are in there early in the spring and then move out into the lake.
  13. Haven't tried lakers yet this year but I would guess about 70'
  14. It's all about which boxer shorts I wear. Doesn't that work for everybody? Once I caught on to it I always wear one of my lucky ones.
  15. My dad was a fair weather fisherman back in the day and took me out occasionally as a kid. My grandfather passed before I was old enough to really know him but he had a library of fishing books that I read in the study every time we visited my grandma. I literally took notes and kept them in a show box along with notes from fishing shows. I did this for about 12 years until I got my drivers license and am now a fishing addict of about 25 years and am about to pick up bow hunting as well. I am proof it can definitely skip a generation.
  16. Looking forward to try trolling Otisco again this year Justin, hopefully with better luck than last year. I did very well casting, by my standards, for muskies and 'eyes but could only get smallies while trolling. 39" I think was my biggest last year, hoping to pull one up from the deep-water this year.
  17. The bass are hitting as of this past Sunday....
  18. Been scouting out in my woods behind the house. So far 2 nice Toms have come out into the field looking for me after some box calling. Sunday will be my first bow hunting experience ever and also first time hunting anything other than waterfowl about 8 years ago. Looking forward to it
  19. In my kayak I go out if the wind is under 8 mph from the North. 10 mph is pretty bumpy but a couple dramamine keeps it all down....usually.
  20. I haven't been up there in 2 weeks but fish were being caught the last 2 trips I was out. Watch the wind direction and for stained water
  21. I have always given 80-100 with 4 clients aboard
  22. How did you grab ahold of the seagull? I bet it got a little hairy as it came boatside...
  23. Just got my turkey blind set up. Now I have to decide if I want to fish Sunday or wait for Tom to stop over on my only day off....
  24. Just remember if you go through the small channel to lay your rods down and not leave them standing up in the holders....I forgot the first time in my kayak and fortunately just scratched them up a little but didn't break any.
  25. Krux, I debated the same thing in my head last week and, since I don't get out until 4:15, I decided to call in sick so I didn't have to wait until Sunday. It was well worth it....
