After debating whether or not planer boards would help my trolling efforts in the kayak to keep my lines from crossing I decided to build my own out of an $0.88 walmart cutting board and a broken aluminum arrow and this was the result. The pencil lead across the bottom needed to be added to keep the keel down. Worked great last week and is only 6" x4". We'll see how well it pulls deep diver's in the future but for small sticks I'm very happy with the set that cost me $14 for a set of 2.

42 and 43 in most spots but a small area was 45 where I got this one right in the middle of a very dark mud line in 6' of water. I thought it was snagged at first when my rod tip bent to the back of the kayak then saw the head shaking it so I paddle hard a few strokes to set the hook and grabbed the rod.

Woohoo finally landed my first brown of the year and it was a beaut. Probably in the 12# range and dragged me around in my kayak for about 10 mins before I could get the net on it. Snapped a few blind pics of it one handed before letting it go, sorry this was the best pic I got. Had one other whack on the same lure but besides that no other action but had a nice mudline to follow thanks to a northeast wind.

Yep that's the one I was referring to and they still make them! I wasn't sure how they would stand up to waves since I fish a lot of big water. Might be fun to try salmon and steelhead fishing the rivers with it as well.

Inline Side Planer Boards

Awesome feedback guys, maybe I won't have to go to a such an ultra-light option especially since I do most of my fishing in big water. I typically run my lures at least 100' back out of my kayak but with the boards can I run the leads a lot shorter especially for browns? -

ahhh yes I do remember hearing about that tip a few years ago with the rear swivel but wasn't trolling at the time and forgot about it. Thanks -

Oh so they may "flip" over from a wave? Do they stay on course after that or twist up the rig at all? -
Inline Side Planer Boards

JakeyBaby I don't recall using the pin on the rear release that is probably why we were always playing "go fetch" and having to retreat off our path. Thanks -
Inline Side Planer Boards

Henrybud, that is exactly the type of planer I am looking for and haven't seen these. I like the gator clip release so it should be able to hold a deep crank without a false release and it stays on the line without resistance while fighting the fish. I might even try it for river bank fishing for salmon and steelhead. Thanks for posting. -
Inline Side Planer Boards

I run braid for the main line with a mono leader. I have used the Offshore boards off a boat and they worked great but would release off the line completely at times with a big fish and would have to go back to track it down after bringing in the fish. Keep in mind I am fishing out of a kayak and a 1 man operation so the simpler the rig the better. Thanks -
Does anyone have any experience with inline planer boards such as the Luhr Jensen side planer or the SideWinder? I would like to use one for trolling 2 lines out of my kayak and think it will help with keeping the lines from crossing but I heard one review stating the sidewinder trips too easily but I like the streamlined shape and simplicity of its design? Any info on these would be very helpful.

I troll out of my kayak and love when I have to jackknife the 'yak into 2' of water practically on shore to dodge a planer board. This is why I start brown fishing while there is still ice covering the ramps...."catching" is few and far between but makes for a more pleasurable fishing experience.
