Fair Haven Ice Conditions

Bass Pro carries a fishing Barometer that is round with a rubberized, black housing around it. Ebay also carries them and they work very well. Just do some research how to use the readings and watch it for a few days leading up to your next outing. If it isn't within the 29.7 to 30.4 range then I have found it is better to stay home and work on projects unless your goal is to just get the line wet.

I started a thread last year and it got a lot of interest so I am posting again for 2016. I broke the kayak in for the first time late last April at Fair Haven trying for browns with no luck but was able to work out some kinks in my set-up. Later in the season I got a new Lowrance Mark 4 Chirp with temp and speed sensors to eliminate the guess work. Had a great 2015 after that first trip starting with walleye season and quickly chipped away at the bucket list with a large tiger muskie, king salmon, 9 1/2 lb walleye and numerous carp up to 35 #'s. Hoping for another great year of fishing and accomodating winds. Kayakers be safe out there and share your stories, reports and pics here.

I can't imagine dragging a 1# weight with paddles?! When I troll with 2 deep divers for walleyes and salmon my arms are feelin' it after a couple miles of paddling. I suppose those that are trolling with ball weights are using Hobie Cats or yaks with foot pedals.

Being a mailman I watch it every day and it has been the most reliable source I use Except for the wind forecast on the lakes which is very important to us as fishermen so keep that in mind

great thanks for the reply and I think I'm going to go for it. I have a Diawa Accudepth reel I plan on putting on it, should be a good fit. -
New to trout and salmon fishing. Looking for help

This will be my second season with my kayak and finally am getting around to putting together a second trolling outfit for trout and salmon. I have an eagle claw starfire 8'6"ML and was thinking about getting a Cabela's Depthmaster in the same size 86ML since I have a gift card to use up. Anybody have any opinions on the Cabela's rods that have used them on Lake O? -

I tried this recipe with a big king salmon fillet fresh from lake ontario in september and couldn't taste the marinade in the meat at all and it tasted pretty bad and it marinated for 12 hrs. I have heard others say they love this recipe too but they also used farm raised or alaskan salmon. What kind of salmon did you use?

Yeah I actually catch carp every spring fishing walleyes with large floating crankbaits and even rattle traps retrieved fast subsurface. They hammer them pretty consistently actually that time of year surprisingly. This hasn't happened just once or twice, I mean every single spring I would say I catch at least 4 or 5 like this. They are a blast to fight on a 7' ML action rod with 8 lb test.

56" SLR Musky Today !
greenhornet73 replied to choo-choo's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Wow that is an impressive fish of a lifetime for sure! My only purebread Musky landed was 48" and an experience I will never forget. I caught it in much more comfortable conditions as it was late July and almost 90 degrees out that day getting a sunburn but I would take a 56" over that in snotty weather any day. Nice job, landing a fish like that is very fortunate but not lucky since there is a lot of know-how that goes into getting in that position in the first place. -
I caught 2 large eyes one year up in the Rideau River, Ont. trolling for Muskies on a large Bagley's deep diver musky crank. Caught both of them in 2 consecutive runs behind a jet diver.

The mornings have been too cold to get my kayak out lately so I have been shore bound. Nice fish, I got one about the same size out there this summer but threw it back and didn't get a weight measurement, just the length. Now I know about how much it probably weighed! Getting any eyes out there this fall? This summer sucked for me there

I have had a horrible fall for eyes as well. As much wind as we have had, each night I went out in October it managed to be dead calm with only pickerel hitting. One night I stung 2 eyes and dropped both at a rods length away. Gave up on em after that and have been catching rainbows from shore since Halloween

my best tip is to keep your bait moving slowly. Do not dead drift. Perch become couch potatoes in a trance when your bait sits still haha. That's my tip and I'm sticking to it.

I never really understood the reason to keep lake trout in the first place? It keeps customers happy to catch and bring home fish but honestly aren't they awful to eat? I never have tried them smoked but everything else I have tried has failed. If anyone wants to share a good recipe let me know and I will start fishing them again in the finger lakes.

I thought the fish responded to water temps to determine when to spawn? If that were the case then wouldn't Alaskan salmon genetics not be affected by our later spawning season? I do understand the philosophy that Lake Ontario salmon have evolved over the years to survive in their current environment where a new strain may fail here but I don't necessarily agree with the water temp issue. Would like to see them grow a little bigger though like we used to see 'em. I haven't caught a 30#er in 5 years or better. Maybe throw a batch in here and there and see what happens rather than putting all the eggs in one basket?
