  1. Ontario starting Sept 15 allows a cormorant cull ! Details are vague as far !
  2. As a last resort #1 drop the lower unit and check for a blocked exhaust . #2 Check the compression using gauge that goes directly into the cylinder head not the one with the short hose ! We have to see the diagnosis !
  3. Have the same engine maybe the same problem ? As posted start with the obvious ! Clean all electrical contacts then apply dielectric grease esp. the bolt that holds the power pack ! When we ran the engine in the dark saw sparks by the power pack , the bolt had backed off just enough to create an intermittent problem ! If not the carbs may have to be rebuilt . A few nobrainers ! Use ethanol few gas and still use a fuel additive , I always filter my gas before putting in the tank . Check for spark at each cylinder ! I made my own spark tester ; mounted 3 spark plugs on a steel plate bolted the plate to the engine hocked up the coil wires to the plugs [ do not mix them up ] crank the engine , you should see spark at each plug ! Again let us know how you make out
  4. Any up date on the Starcraft project ! Keep us up to date on how it progresses ?
  5. Do you know when the impeller [ water pump ] was changed if not do it if you have the skills ! From what I read you are on a " steep learning curve " , you may be better off taking the engine to a dedicated shop !
  6. Lots of good comment ! #1 Sharp hooks a no brainer ! As post tie directly to the J-Plug [ that is the way the plug was made in the 1960s ] and no snap ! It was a J-Plug that got me my first salmon in 1984 and " hooked " me on the sport ! I can only post what works for us ! Last week our #1 salmon was a mature hen chinook ~ 20 lbs we released hopefully to spawn , that was in 100 fow off a NK 28 stacker with the #4 J-Plug on the main line ! We have not had a problem with stackers and J-Plugs , but the longer the stacker line the more tangles ! Unlike sliders [ not fixed to line ] which will always tangle coming up , but seem to work some days when stackers do not ! Agreed in close long leads , stackers would be " pointless " lol ! Another J-Plug that was working for us , but not recently was a #5 [ big ] flo white / black ladderback first light !
  7. ps. 6 ft. lead for the cheater !
  8. Not sure of your question but #4 J-Plug in lemon/yellow has been working for us recently 30 ft. lead fluor leader 20 lb. ok plus a stacker spoon NK 28 plus others ; they seem to work together IMO ! J-Plugs for us seem to work early on or not at all , so if no hits go to SD dodger fly green or purple plus stacker on rigger or just 2 spoons ! Hope that helps ?
  9. As you describe #1 check for a blocked exhaust ! drop the lower unit , the exhaust is clearly visible ! #2 clean all electrical contacts with dielectric grease esp the ground behind the power pack ! If you can run the engine in the dark , if you see a spark you have the diagnosis ! #3 c, heck compression with a gauge that bolts into to block not the one with the short hose , it will give a false low reading ! #4 let us know if you fixed it ! Hope this helps !
  10. Ditto on HB2 ! OMC = outboard marine crap ! If you mean power pack that can be changed did it X2 on my 1983 70 hp which is still my main outboard on my Starcraft ! Even with the service manual from OMC I could not figure out how to test it , so I just changed it X2 and still runs ok for now ! If I live long enough the next engine will be a Yamaha !
  11. Shimano my #1 pick after 34 years on the water but like in shooting " it is not the gun but the gunner ! "
  12. " balls to the wall .. ! " new to me but I get it ! These posts can be a good read ; All the i.s have been doted and the t,s have been crossed in what I read ! Cheap pays twice and quality costs as previously posted ! Let us know how it turns out !
  13. Several ?s Looks like a big job ! Have you done anything like this before ? Can you block out the time to go right through the work rather than short sessions which often does not work ! Have seen boat projects that were never finished , wasted time and $ ! Can you get a helper even part time will speed up the job ! The successful boats were started now fair weather ! Sorry no more fishing or hunting ! By November you should have a good handle of the job to finish in the spring , no more fishing until the job is done !
  14. As posted now is the time ! The # 4 lemon/yellow is working now , make sure you run a stacker spoon with it ! The #5 flo white/black ladder was good but has slow down !
  15. As far as trolling after dark off Port Dalhousie Ont. we gave up on it as a lost cause as a waste of time , plus the inherent risks involved . Casting from shore is a different matter but we leave that to others who apparently can do well at it !
  16. At this stage you should also check for compression ! If you do use the gauge that screws directly into the engine block not the one with the short hose , that one will give you a false low reading ! Again I found out the hard way !
  17. Today lake Erie walleye was $24 a pound at Metro !
  18. We all have different results ! The only dud I had HB2 as the first blank recommended by the store owner [ who was in the business of making custom rods ] for 10.5 ft. was way too soft and I did not like it at all for big salmon ! He told my a story of a custom muskie rod that he made for a client who after using I for a year just was not happy with it so the owner liked it so much he bought it back and has been using it ever since ! you cannot please everyone ! As far as the time and money that is a tough call a call we all have to make ! ie. I can go to Metro market and buy Lake Erie walleye for MAYBE $16 a pound or go out on Lake Erie and MAYBE get some at what $ 200 a pound ! I too am using the cheap offshore rods for replacements [ and buying unemployment ] each to his own !
  19. Bottom line for me was you could build a rod you cannot buy ! for me it was a 10.5 foot Fenglass very stiff ! When a big king salmon hits it they know they are in trouble ! The store owner told me too stiff too long I do not think he fishes any more [ that was 1990 ] !
  20. * 8 inch SpinDoctor with AtomIc fly ; colour rules on Lake Ontario . Start with green then black/purple . Keep it simple to start , the big stuff is for the pros !
  21. Let us know if you diagnosed the problem : as a last resort check for a blocked exhaust !
  22. Thanks for the response Scotter96 will add it to our game plan ; not interested in spending another $ grand for a toy for what may be my last year , with or without COVID 19 !
  23. Start simple , clean all electrical contacts use dielectric grease esp. the ground behind the power pack : if you can run the engine in the dark looking for sparks ! I found out the hard way , thought it was the carbs took all afternoon to do a rebuild got late started the engine same problem , by now dark saw spark behind the power pack just had to tighten the bolt , fixed it !
  24. Was your deep speed faster or slower than your surface speed or did it vary ?
  25. Excaliber , the last one you will buy !
