  7. Get your own survey IMO !
  8. Why did the block crack ?
  9. Florida boat ? Been in salt water ? Buyer beware ! 8k budget ? 18 ft Aluminum will do what you want , pick your days on Lake Ontario ! If you can find a 19 ft. Lund at your price buy it !
  10. This is were the corn comes in with a mixed diet !
  11. It is the low sugar content of the wild apples that does not attract as many deer . Check if any other creatures are eating them, eg possum , coons etc ? We use falls from domestic apples , pears work better but corn cobs have been the best . We will mix a " cow lick " salt block with crushed [ stomped ] apples with good effect : another cover scent is to stomp apples on your boots and if possible keep apples in your pockets during the hunt .
  12. Salmon fishing aain"t cheep be prepared ! Iprobably have as much money in gear and tackle as in the boat !
  13. I have fished Lake Ontario for 35 years in a 16 ft. StarCraft and at times Lake Erie : Pick your days get a weather forecast and watch the sky . What engine and how many engines ? My main engine is a 70 hp 2 cycle Evinrude with a 9.9 Yamaha 4 stoke kicker which is great ! Once it gets scary it stops being fun , don't take risks and you will be fine ! how deep are your pockets ?
  14. Good post HB2 ! But it still ain"t what it used to be ! IMO it is the cormorants as the wild card watching them destroy our spring fishery in Port Weller harbor this spring ! There are no nesting sites in that area !
  15. Lots of interesting posts ' have been out in Lake Ontario every year since 1984 . I may have missed it but I did not see any mention of the cormorants destroying bait fish population ! Does taking ~4500 lbs of prime salmon out of the spawning pool in 2 days have any effect on the return [ I enter derbies every year that I am able to so I am not against prize fishing but every fish we took this year was not wasted ] I have learned to ignore " cheap shot artists " and do not read them . If they do not get an effect IMO they tend to go away !
  16. Ditto on the no ethanol fuel and " additive " ; remove the drain plug on the carb and drain [may solve the problem ] . I always filter my gas before putting the fuel in the tank . I always run the carbs out of fuel after use but I have heard different opinions for this in storage esp lawn mowers !
  17. Ditto on the Alpena Diamonds !
  18. One theory is that we only catch the stupid game the rest get away cannot be hooked or shot ?
  19. Check out Spoonpullers site they have a category for tournaments .
  20. The 243 will work just fine depending on the type of bullet and bullet placement ! I assume you not be hunting from a tree stand ! My tree standing hunting days are over ; I only will hunt from the ground leave the stands to the young people IMO !
  21. Lots of good practical information ! Some of my best company on Lake Ontario has been fishing alone LOL ! Stacker length is important 5 to 6 feet :too short will not work too long may tangle ! I like fixed stackers , I want to know were the second lure is ! I have had 2 fish on at the same time but as been posted one got off !
  22. Ditto on the speed that catches fish for you ; say with it as long as it works then change IMO !
  23. Bottom line sic ; it appears unlikely that a salmon fisherman would be hit by lightening on Lake Ontario [ if anyone has a true story put it up !] The one guy 83 years of age who has been out there70 + years was hit under a tree [ not fishing] and was unconscious for 3 days was under a tree in a storm which was hit ! The other one was a sailor who was not hit directly when lightening struck a sail boat at the marina ,[ not his] he felt the " splash " effect with the hair on his head brisselling but no more so he must have been some distance firm the strike ! Many of the sail boats had major damage ! Thar sailor told me a news story about 7 years ago ; a sail boat took a direct hit off Kingston Ontario ; a MAYDAY was called but no evidence of the boat or crew was ever found !
  24. Once It came in so quick within (5 - 10) minutes I couldn't see more than 5 - 6 feet in front of boat, with high waves, thunder - lightening to boot. Even with bilge pump running I took on so much water the back of boat was swamped. Couldn't plane due to visibility, very concerning to say the least. What lake did this storm happen on ?
  25. As has been posted many times no fish is worth risking your life for [ eg as what happened out of Point Breeze last August ] ; always get a weather report before going out ! check the baurometric pressure [ a falling pressure is often not good ] Watch the clouds esp. the bright white ones going straight up [ called vertical development ] and note the wind direction if the wind direction changes the weather may also be changing and usually not good . Note any " crackles " on the radio indicating lightening , may be a good time to be close to shore to get off the water !
