Cayuga lake water temperature and fish migration
suttontroller94 replied to Girocks's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Big thing to be said I was targeting the bigger landlocks we didn't catch one under 18" all day and we lost a pair that jumped and I could get a good look at that were clearly 6- 7lbs as well as losing many between 3- 5 and catching some in that range aswell -

Dont wanna give to much info out with the derby there this weekend but yesterday we found the Lakers above the landlocks and that being said the landlocks were big and spunky we lost many more of those than we caught aswell as losing a Laker that was an easy 14lbs at the stern of the boat due to some terrible netting... the fish are in and around bait for sure -

Trout fishing. Cayuga
suttontroller94 replied to [email protected]'s topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
If you have rigs your fine as sk8man stated. Just bite off one piece at a time and add things slowly. Before i had downriggers, leadcores, coppers and wire dipsys we ran a seth green and a mono dipsy on a 3 setting per side and a mono dipsy set on 0 right down the chute. Its not ideal to run dipsys on mono vs wire however it works well. We never even had line counters for them rods just level winds and i knew how many feet of line per pass of the level wind back and forth again not ideal but worked for broke highschool kids and caught alot of fish. Later i took those rods i used for mono dipsys and used them for leadcore rods. No need to over think it. Start with the rigs, add a rod or 2 when you can afford it start with dipsys if you like lake trout and move to adding coppers, leadcores and downriggers later -
For sure. I just hope I can get on them better in morning last time out wasn't so hot

I'm sure I'll catch alot allot of crap for this and its almost definitely wrong but food for thought. Maybe gobies would be a positive thing for this lake. They took off quick in Cayuga and have yet to really do much harm to the trout fishery. I'm unsure what they have done if anything to panfish and bass. But maybe Kueka could actually benefit from having another type of bait fish in the system. As we've seen in Cayuga everything from perch to salmon and trout feed on them heavily. The small mouth love them too so it could probably benefit the bass fishermen As Well so that their pride and joy doesn't decline too. I'm sure this will bring up many mixed opinions as they are an invasive non native species but alewives weren't native either... -
Just my opinion I know I'm young and you guys have fished that lake way longer than I have.. I think the over population of the Lakers in that lake caused the bait decline and now they are on the decline. Hopefully it's just a cycle thing and the bait will eventually rise again

Scouting pays off with 4 beard Tom
suttontroller94 replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in Waterfowl / Bird Game
Nice bird! -
Double bearded tom! Wasn't planning to go out this morning but when I checked weather about 3am they were no longer calling for rain. So I got out of work at 7am and ran home to grab my gear and hit the woods. At my second set up had 2 longbeards going nuts and came in on a string. They hung up at 45 yards when my decoys started to til tip over in the wet soil but I managed to shoot what I actually thought was the smaller of the two and when I got up to him realised he was a double bears! 20lbs 12oz 5.5inch and 10inch beards and 1" spurrs! Can't wait to get his brother in a day or 2!

That's cool you got a musky the Dec doesn't even list them as a Cayuga species. They don't lost walleye either but they are in there

Were there catchable numbers of sawbellies? Was there last Tuesday afternoon and there were some smaller schools in close but I didn't have a jigging rig. In that note there were enough that I put a mini spoon on a downrigger rod and was able to get one. Was thinking just before dark they probably get thicker
-
Was throwing spoons off t falls this morning lake had patches of floating debris that I noticed but nothing large. However there were patches of good green color everywhere. It looked fishable would just have to watch out for the patches or be prepared to clean lures often
-
Yes it is possible the water is high though so there's not alot of room under bridge so watch your head

X2 Nail on the head here. I fish from a 14fter so I've gotta really be cautious of what launch I use and would prefer to just launch at Sampson and travel cross lake however living in a primarily West wind area find severne to suit my needs far easier most of the time
-
RBonnel. Lodi and Sampson are both on the east side of the lake

Could've been sculpins but looked like the gobies we consistently pull out of Cayuga Lakers and meat was bright orange like all other gobie eating lakers I've taken. Hard to tell when they are fairly digested though but definitely were not smelt or sawbellies

We caught Lakers with gobies in their guts in owasco last year
