Is 16 foot deep v to wimpy for the big lake?
suttontroller94 replied to Windknot's topic in This Old Boat
Its not to wimpy on certain days. While others it isnt going to be able to handle it. The biggest thing to remember is it is most important to check the weather and go from there. It would make a nice boat for the fingerlakes however. Personally i own a 14ft deep v and fish on the fingers even in some rough conditions and have fished ontario in the spring for browns with no problems but i have been on the big lake fishing for salmon in rollers and its no fun. You have to know when to tuck your tail between your legs and get to shore -

Those xperts are great for shooting birds at respectable ranges. I shoot the Winchester blindside most often because i get them for same price as xperts with a plastic shell container but all the fancy stuff is for the rich and the skybusters. Keep em within 35yards and youll see no difference

So feel free to state your opinion but something was brought to my attention today that really got me thinking. So today at work I was discussing various things about the finger lakes with a co-worker who has a cottage on Conesus. He is not an angler but just enjoys the finger lakes region as much as we all do. The topic of the lake level do to this drought was brought up and he hit me with a statement that really left me speechless. He realizes that the runoff from farms and wineries has a negative effect on the lakes but he said that this year there was no algae bloom nor were there many weeds over there and he figured it has to have something to do with the low lake levels, but then he mentioned that this year with little to no rain we didnt have the runoff from the agriculture that we normally would have and we just couldnt figure out if this was positive or negative. Is this going to just make more runoff next year? Did we get a year without much runoff to maybe help out? Or did we get enough rain for the runoff to still happen? Please voice your opinions to maybe help answer this question.

But if using braid follow the same rules. The only time tighter settings are fine is using mono because of the stretch in the line. When i was using mono for dipsys i prefered a tighter drag Sent from my SM-J100VPP using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

I prefer a twilly tip rod and i believe you would find the line and tips or if you decided to just get a new pre setup okuma combo at field and stream, catherine valley outfitters or hills valleys and streams. Sent from my SM-J100VPP using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Yeah thats something that makes a big difference. I use 12lb seaguar red label florocarbon for spoon dipsys and although i shouldnt say it... not a break off at all this year with it and a big thing i make sure of is to make sure to not let rods with leaders or your spool of line sit oit in the sun or heat during storage. It weakens any line and will cause break offs. That is something that is often over looked but will keep your line strength top notch for those spunky salmon and rainbows. And always keep a fairly lose drag on a wire dipsy, i always let my dipsys creep out to depth on a light drag in the holder then just reach up and tighten it until it just occasionally clicks. Also you want the dipsy set tight enough so that if your boat is rocking in waves it wont trip but a slight jerk of the rod will pop it. -

Also dont be afraid to just ditch the dodger and run a spoon on the deep rigger you'll still get lakers but thata where my better landlocks have been hanging. Purple is a good color and that way you can put a slide cheater on that too (Your 2 rods will contain 4 lures) and you will be able to tolerate higher speeds better than using a dodger -

That sounds like a solid set up. Maybe bump speed up to 2.2-2.4 and bring high rigger up between 50 and 55ft with a spoon with a slide cheater and use the dodger and a peanut or spin and glow on the deep rigger. Dont be afraid to work in shallow til your deep rigger bounces bottom or out deeper. If you think your in to shallow or to DEEP of water your probably not you will pick up lakers on the deeper rigger and bows and landlocks on the high rigger this way -

Well i have a 9.9 yamaha on my 14ft and can get as slow as 1.3-1.5 with 2 riggers in the water so im sure you could with an 18. If not use a bag or a bucket
