Braided And Wire line vs Mono (dipseys)
FishingTheFL replied to FishingTheFL's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Yeah, I've noticed that most the time they wont trip unless a big fish hits... I loosened the trip screw a bit to adjust but Ive been meaning to switched to braided. I got the spider wire right now. Ill upgrade to fireline when i get my next reel with line counter... one broke today... so tomorrow Im guessing. Open my other line counter at the same time should give me and idea. -
Braided And Wire line vs Mono (dipseys)
FishingTheFL replied to FishingTheFL's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I didnt run into any fleas out by Lp today but I also didnt catch a fish or have one run. Moved to west side and hooked up on a baby 250fow 70 down. So much for fish dinner. -
Anyone know how much of a depth increase Braided line will get over mono? Switched to 50lbs braided with 10lbs diameter and Im trying to find a chart to figure out depth.

Want to try a new location, which lake?
FishingTheFL replied to CatskillBob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Cayuga. Not Kueka. Make sure you hit the right lake. Some senator last year made a wrong turn in Ithaca and ended up on the wrong lake and couple hours out his way. He was very.... very mad when I informed him one started with a C and the other was a K. Still chuckle over it. -
I use front mount troller on calm days, days with chop I put the rear mounted down. Both have uses, sometimes I just run the motor in the back and let the other guy have the bow. I'll try out deeper. Saw lots of bait in 45 to 50 fow. Fish on them but water temp was 73° at surface, fish were above the bait. I need to get a water probe but I had a couple costly repairs. Winter is also coming. Never know how that's going to go in the Tree business. Mike

Hit the water 6:30 out of the Chamber. Set out jigging that morning. Fish were slow until about 7 am. Caught one Laker which felt like a big stick coming in... let that one go because lack of fight. Had two more grabs then one nice laker about 6 to 7 lbs. Nothing huge. But a nice fight from that one and beautiful color on it. Shook its head, hook come out, fish danced a little more till he figured "I'm free" and disappeared to the deep... Fish were in 70 to 125 FOW. Bite lasted for about 30 mins. Maybe I floated off the fish, it clouded up, temperature changed... stayed out till 10. Headed back I'm to get some work around the house done. Tried later that night but it was to rough. Anyone catch trout in the evening this time of the year?

Pretty sure they were fertilizing a field by plane the week it started blooming. Also temperature increases probably helped, plus run off from the couple flash floods all possibilities. Anyone been out recently? North end looked good from shore. 65 feet in the air.

Put that on your wall:)

Looked like they were spreading fertilizer in Romulus on the fields. Maybe higher levels of fertilizer plus run off. We had one or two good rains. After that I noticed the color change. Hard to say what other parts are doing, color looks spread lake wide and not just near run off areas.

Tons of fun! Think I like jigging more now. I'll still troll to find the school but getting big ones on spinning rods.... now that's fun. Wish I got it up to see it. Haven't had a fish peel so much line before. Sheldrake is just a beach for locals to launch. Can be tough to launch there by yourself. I'll be living down where the double wide is split in two. You can reach the same area from Dean's Cove but it's a bit wider at that point of the lake. Seems a lot of bigger fish stay north of Stoney point or South of Long point. Most my luck come from right in front of the launch on long point. Heavy traffic makes it difficult to fight a big fish, maintain your heading, and ride the waves. Key for me was finding the bait.
-
Launched out Sheldrake, fish are stacked up just north of the damaged light. Mostly very small browns and bows. After and hour moved to the east side of the lake and picked up one Large Laker on Sutton 71. Couple smaller ones from 6 to 9 lbs. Around 11:30 gave jigging a try for the first time. First cast, small one comes in and spits the hook. Second cast was much larger fish. Almost took the whole spool. Had to let it run on 6lbs test. Course I'm running back and forth on the boat trying to keep it from going under the boat... wouldn't you know everyone and their brother has to get as close as they can to me. Tough fighting waves and traffic much less the fish.... after 10 mins... tink.... there goes the fish. Never saw it but was bigger then what I kept for dinner... Caught lakers from 30 ft out to 150 working he drop off. Fish were moving to the jig excellent. Probably could of caught many more but my gas was spent from trolling.

I found him. I'll look threw his profile and figure out what he has in stock. I got some one that goes to Naples on Tuesdays going to pick me up some 71s but I like to try new stuff to see what works

Great Lake Lures the same as Great Lake Takle shop.com?

Thanks Les. I think I got it now. You guys are full of wonderful info. I went from knowing nothing and weeks of catching nothing to having a blast. Fleas in the finger lakes are picking up and water temps are getting higher so I've been using bigger Dipsey trying a Jensen dodgers with a fly. Suttons are still catching large fish... I actually need to go get more... lost my first lure on a fish running. Found a nice spot where big fish seem to hang. Just need to bring one in. Any other lures that keep up with Sutton's? Can't seem to find anything as good as the 71s. Finger Lakes Tackle site was down last I knew.

K. That's what I was going to ask. Any suggestions for what test to use braided? Charts were based on mono, is braided line much different in depth changes. Thinner diameter run deeper? I don't want to be running in to bottom and losing my setup. I suppose paddles and spin doctors will be fine behind bigger boards?
-
Bigger diver like #1 Dipsey be alright or will that be to heavy? Think I'll go with lead core tho. Seems more practical. My goal is to get the diver out of the presentation. I'm hoping this will turn more fish on or increase my chance at bigger fish.
-
I was worried a diver would pull to hard on the board. Figured that's why lead core and copper were used.
-
Can you use mono with a trolling wait to get it down? Les showed me how they work one day, but then I didn't understand
-
I use snubbers on the finger lakes. Seems more fish are hooked in the mouth with snubbers, without them they were losing eyes, getting snagged in the gills. Haven't had any spit the hook but I haven't been fishing trout that long. Seem to catch my fair share tho
-
Boat launch at the Chamber is free. State park also has launch both in Geneva.
-
Ah, so you run the line out then clip it to the line. Makes more sense now. Use lead core to get it down then board to get it out?
-
I've been avoiding buying two boards because I'm not sure exactly how to use them. I want to make sure I rig them right, what test to yes, all the basics to using them. If possible pictures would be great. Going with wall eye church boards. Heard lots good things.
