My son is going to Lake Erie walleye fishing, their preferred method is trolling plugs. He wants to try targeting Steelies. What would be his best bet, I have whatever he would need but not sure where to get him started. Dodgers/plugs, flashers/flies, what color spoons/size, dipseys, leadcore, any and all help is very much welcome. Also what depth or temp would he bee looking for.

Once the sun goes down a lantern over the side will bring them right to the surface, as they start to show up dim the light and they'll come closer. A small hook sabaki rig will jig them up nicely.Put them in a cooler about a 5gallon size with about 1/4 cup of dissolved Kosher Salt, do not use table salt the Iodine will kill them, add a couple of ice cubes to slowly lower the water temp. The Kosher salt keeps a slime coat on their body and keeps them nice and hard not mushy.Salt is the game changer keeping them alive. Also a good aereator , I like to use 2 minnow-misers

Been setting up my 19ft smokercraft for Lake O for the past 3 yrs. Used it Striper fishing this spring and the motor died on the way in. Just had time to look it over and seems the top end is blown. Can't see putting money into a 30 yr old motor. If anyone has , or knows of a 90hp outboard fairly new or in great condition pass it on, maybe I might get up for the summer Kings after all. Any tips would be appreciated.

Copper reels

Just saw Yankee Trollers post in Tackle and Techniques, guess that answers my questions. -
Looking to add a pair of copper lines to the arsenal. I'm guessing 45LB blood run copper is the way to go. Any suggestions on reel make or size that would work .

I just picked up the Garmin Striker 5 for my son for xmas, a friend has it and the unit works like a charm. I have a Helix5 that I have been using and am not impressed one bit, it seems hard to program and I have called hummingbird several times. The tech support seems to always rush me off the call. The problem I believe is me not understanding the term used as to what setting I would need, In the past I've had many flashers, paper graphs and for years I used an Eagle ID6300 , it was totally automatic, just power up and leave it alone. These newer units with all the different setting I find extremely confusing, and not sure what settings I need to have set. I'll start the year using the Helix5 again and try to see if I can get it right, if not i'll pick up the Garmin Striker 7 for myself. -
Jeremy, reading your posts all season I believe Lady O's water runs through your veins. You have been extremely helpful to the novice. Seeing the kids smiles when they are either reeling in fish or just admiring your catch says it all. Enjoy the pics as much as your detailed info about your exploits. You are a true sportsman. Well done season, good luck till next spring whether it be in the woods or on the water. Can't wait to see the grin when you boat your goal.

wire vs Copper
leadcore troller replied to leadcore troller's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Rob, Excellent article on copper, i'm sold on it. You answered all my questions and more. Took a lot of leg work out of researching lines and gear, again Great Job. -
Have run braided stainless in the past, seems like copper is the new wire on the block. If copper is the way to go what size or brand is the favored.
