Given my druthers , I think the OAK is the best port on the south store from now till mid Aug . And I have a cottage at Sandy . It's good , don't get me wrong but it can be hit and miss for kings. It's not a great place if there is a sustained east wind . The Oak west is great king water as you get the current from the Niagara there if winds are right. I feel it dissipates around Bald Eagle . I have yearly docked at Johnson's creek ( my favorite ) , Oak , Bald Eagle , Sandy.

Magnum Metalz will be my next riggers if I buy new . Saw them at the show and the guy who makes them . Well built ,compact, all business riggers with a minimum of plastic . And will handle a 20# ball .. And the price ain't bad .

Newbie needs advice. Please!

I run 2 downriggers My setup for water 50 ft plus is One flasher back 25 on one rigger Two spoons stacked on the other rigger , one 10 ft above , one 10 ft below the flasher set back the same or slightly farther . 1 or 2 dipsys with flashers or spoons . Fish the flasher at the bottom level of the bait or in 48 to 50 deg water . Sometimes I run all flashers . There are, days I start that way and put 1 flasher on each downrigger . And 1 on each dipsey . Then change to spoons if no hits . If targeting kings all flashers can be good , especially mid summer on . But this time of year the spoons catch all species . I like to run one flasher all the time somewhere . There are, days they spook the fish so I keep one on a dipsey . -
Using Evil eyes a ton way back when , if the single hits bone good , it can be hard to get out and I have bent the hell on some of them . The biggest contributor to mortality IMO , is taking the fish out of the, water , seconded by long lines,. Anyone who is 100 % catch and release is throwing back some dead or dying fish .

Is that the peacefull protest where they pushed over the barricades or were throwing bricks ? Or the one where they flipped over police cars and torched them and screamed in the officers faces ? Or one where they tried to rip the flag from the old vet and abused him ? Or was it the one in Roch where they beat the girl with a 2x4 ? Or one of many more ,should I go on . ? Just to clarify .

I personally am having a hard time with what I am seeing . I don't want to watch it but can't turn away . The images speak for themselves. I feel we are on the verge or are in a modern day civil war . The willingness of some to blatantly break the law, steal from others , destroy their property , and assault some that try to stop them,or are different , and revel in their actions is appalling. And each night they seem to be more emboldened. And using a tragic incident to justify it . This is not about George anymore . Our public officials and law enforcement are suppose to stop this from happening . It's their sworn duty . But I feel are handcuffed by Mayors / leaders that are in over their heads on this . To many of these " peacefull " protests turn ugly . And neighborhoods that were not as affluent , are now destroyed .And business owners lives are destroyed. Talk about crapping in your mess kit . And the thugs who did it don't seem to care or are not smart enough to . And are allowed to get away with it . Who in their right mind would want to live or start a business in these areas or even want to go there? When businesses pull out we will here the outcry of discrimination . And the demand for tax dollars to rebuild it . And they will get it to pacify them . The hatred I see for law enforcement and fellow Americans also disturbs me . A while back we saw people throwing water on officers and them taking it . Look at where we are now . Many of the protesters engage in the same bigotry towards the police and others they claim to be victims of . Our leaders better squash this quick . They know what needs to be done . They just need to find the guts to do it . But I think some secretly approve . God bless America We need it .

Thanks for your honesty It's humbling to post a slow day . And it's just as informative or more so than a glowing report .- 1 reply

Any one know if the campground is open or when it will open ? I assume the launch us open ?

It's a nice thought to be 100% catch and release but that's not possible with deep water trolling . Bringing fish up from very deep , especially on dipsey and long lines , bringing them in the boat , taking hooks out which is hard sometimes , Then a pic , a lot of times is to much stress on them . If I bring them boatside and they aren't hooked good I hang my net back to catch the hooks and rip the hook out while the fish is still in the water or hang over the back of my boat while the fish is,in the water to dehook .
-
And also on my small boat I have 2 short arms about 6 ft apart with 10# derbies and have not had one tangle fishing down to 85 ft . Your weights are swinging side to side IMO . Real Short leads with very different depth may have the shallow lure catch the blown back line from rod tip to release of the deep rigger . I have had this happen . And I do a lot of tight turning .
-
When you say Cannon release I assume they are the pinch release on the cable you hook on to the back of the weight . The same thing happened to me last year fishing deep and switching from Offshore to Roemers because the pads in the Offshore wore out and wouldn't hold an 11" flasher . I think the release hooked on the back of the weight holds it straighter and has less of a tendency to swing back and forth .

I fish a,lot Sept to early Oct for staggers . And the lake is flat a lot . Some years . Have to pick the day , if it's rough ,it's off. If it gets rough , it's off . If I put this together , it's 1 man only . I don't want anyone to feel unsafe or uncomfortable . So if you do, definitely , don't go . Maybe there won't be enough interest to have it . We will see .

How to eliminate water and hone in on kings?
HB2 replied to hondo573's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I have been trolling the lake since 1976. Used surface speed and I think I did pretty well . My son talked me into getting a X4 . It helps a lot but I don't fish really any different . No down temp? spread your baits out vertically and fish marks / bait . Better to go a little fast than to slow . You can get a surface speed / temp module for probably 40 to 75 $ . And it will help lot . I'm a creature of habit . Depending on what time of year I do the same thing . Once Thermocline sets up I will motor out to my spot 50 or 60 ft and drop lines . Then troll a west north west heading gradually getting deeper till I see fish or hook up . Once I get to say 140 , I make a decision . Head in or go out . Whatever , I troll north and south after that . To me the most important thing is green water . When you go out , look at what depth other boats are to start . Back to the question on how to quickly eliminate dead water ? That's the 64000$ question . And what it's all about . -
-
By the sounds of it , we should have put the boats on the trailers and headed to the Bar . Would have been worth it . Amazing how it can be so good one port and so bad at another .
-
There was a time I thought I wanted to get in the tournament circuit . Man I'm glad I did not . My nature is to win so all my fishing time and dollars would be involved with that . I would miss all the other actual fishing I so enjoy . Now that I'm on the water I fish a lot . I don't have the resources to get boat and equipment to compete . Or the time to prep , practice ,etc. So I will fish the LOC when I can and hopefully this small boat thing takes off a little and we can have a few a year for fun .

Back out first light to find cold black water Fished from 70 to 160 . Didn't Mark much , only 1 hit . Something has to change .

Out again this morning , went west out to 170 . Blank screen out there with only one Laker to show for it out there . Came back in to 100. 2 good Lakers latter , I pulled lines and came in to do yard work .

Awesome looking water this afternoon . Current must have moved it in . Nice temp break with scrum line . But nothing on it. Maybe tommorow will be better . Can't count how many time I caught nothing and the next day was great , or vice versa .
