Creek Salmon eat Skein, but staging Salmon Don't bite
HB2 replied to garrymny's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I have caught a few kings on eggs under a float this past week and a few had the hook down its throat . I have learned in the past few years doing this that if you don't have the right eggs cured the right way you will catch little or nothing . The fish may have lost their appetite, but they haven't lost their sense of smell , sight or taste . If they see something that looks and smells good, and tastes good , they might take a bite . How many times have we eaten something when we are not hungry because it smelled and looked good ? -

How Do You Spool Your Reels With New Line?
HB2 replied to Todd in NY's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I take a pencil , put the spool on , and pinch both ends between my feet . Or I take a screwdriver and put it thru the spool and clamp it straight up in my vice if I'm in my basement . Put a piece of cardboard between the spool and jaws of vice . Primitive methods I have been using for years . Both spin and casting reels -
Avoiding Flasher Fly/Cut bait from tangles.
HB2 replied to av8er219's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Try longer leads, of 25 to 35 ft Ditto on the to much slack on decent of ball . I keep it in the rod holder and loosen drag tension on line from rod to ball . A lot and of time the flasher will stay on the surface when you first drop the ball and will come back toward the boat . If you have shorter leads and a lot of slack I can see that being the problem . Let it down some and look to see , if so stop the weight and let the flasher catch up . This happens to me a lot . I don't tangle but the flasher kind of surfs . -
Got a nice durable set at the Lockport outdoor store . I love that place Right down the street from Niagara produce . My favorite grocery store .

A friend of mine had basically the same situation you have . I took a piece of plywood big enough to put all the tanks and batteries on and took pieces of 3/4 pine and outlined the tanks and screwed the pieces to the plywood for a snug fit . Painted the board white and ran a bungee over the tanks . Worked great

Got out first light . Started in 60 ft and worked out to 140 temp was down around 100 ft . A,lot of bait in close . Got 2 knock off right off the bat then searched . Got over some fish and bait and managed 2 kings . One More hit and that was it. Probably the last day with the big boat as tommorow looks to be Nasty . And might pull it tomorrow. Then it will be small boat`n . The 2 fish and most of the hits came on my Gary D rig . It has been my go to this year and I'm very happy with it and has only let me down a few times . Never put a fly out this year . Did not get to tweak it like I wanted to . Can't wait to try it on the " off the mouth " bite . .

Creek Salmon eat Skein, but staging Salmon Don't bite
HB2 replied to garrymny's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I trib fish for kings a lot as I have a cottage on one . I fish either a j 13 rapala or a mag hot n tot among others lures . The plug bite is usually first light . After that it's Skein. Last year I caught a hand full on plugs , it was mostly skein. I fish a lot of bass and pike and when I come to a spot I fan cast a spinner of some sort , then jig . Sometimes they hit the spinner bait . Or sometimes I can't get a hit on one and it's all jigs . They are either in a chasing mood or they aren't . I feel it's the same with the salmon . -

Then my suggestion is to get the he'll off your sorry butts and go up there .:-) I long for up there . The mountains are calling and I must go. I like salmon trolling but I love it up there . I am happiest when I'm sleeping in my tent and having a nice breakfast off my camp stove after watching th we Sun come up over the mountains . It feeds my soul . So many fish , so little time .

Spent 4 great days sleeping in a tent , eating camp grub , drinking beer and bourbon with 2 good friends . Listen to loons as I fell asleep and taking in nature's bounty and appreciating every minute . I live to be up there , I want my ashes spread up there . Can't wait to get back . I posted where I went ,what I used . Figured it might inspire some to go . Get away from the trolling routine and actually go fishing . Fished bass off weed edges and drop offs in the morning with jigs and drifted over weedbeds mid day casting spinners for pike . I don't think 30 pike and 40 bass for 3 guys fishing a lot in 4 days is tearing it up . Maybe to some it is . There are plenty of times I have not done well over the years but it seems they are less and less as I get more experience . Those are the numbers like it or not . We live in a winners world. We keep score like it or not . All I read on here are numbers . I'm not one of those " every person gets a trophy " libs . Sorry if it offends the you . I

It amazes,me the amount of stupidity I read on here Sitting at the Lumberjack eating breakfast on the way out . 4 days off the grid boys weekend . Probably landed 30 pike biggest 37 " 40 bass most keepers to 21 "" More pics to follow after my friends send them to me of their phones and camara . The less people I see up here the better .

Salmon/Trout fishing from SHORE or close to it
HB2 replied to joefishingforslobs's topic in Open Lake Discussion
If you are going to cast , spoons are great with maybe a rattle trap or j 13 rapala or diving plug of some sort . If you are going to troll , j plugs or deep divers like a diving long a bomber .If you don't have downriggers . I find the fish like water 12 to 60 ft deep for the most part . Start close and work out . Best time and most consistent will be starting 1 st week of Sept on . First light and Dusk best but it is hit and miss . I troll out of my 16 ft Alumacraft and have a blast . Just watch the weather . Safety first . -
Albeit being inconsistent year to year , I think there is more Nat reproduction on the south shore tribs than most think . On the west coast the fish have to swim sometimes hundreds of miles to their spawning grounds . In LO it could be in some cases , hundreds of feet . If the eggs hatch , they have a chance . I have been saying for years that Jurassic park line . And there fish now aren't your father's Kings.

HBs Grilled Salmon with sweet pickles , vadalia onion and Hoseradish Sauce on Wegmans 6 seed organic Bread. With a Walnut and dried cranberry tossed spring salad .. It all stars with an expertly caught fillet of King Salmon( Substitute Coho , or Steelhead) from the pristine waters of Lake Ontario . Season it with fresh lime juice and pulp, crushed Garlic , Montreal chicken or lemon pepper Take grilled fillet and place on thick slice of bread , add sweet bread and butter pickles , a generous slice of the sweet onion , and cover with Worbles horseradish sauce . For the salad , some spring mix , chopped walnuts, Wegmans dried cranberries , sliced onion ,sliced tomatoes , optional blue cheese crumbles . Toss with a balsamic vinegar and Splash of extra virgin or Kens lite Northern Italian dressing Whether it's a lunch , light supper or on the boat , one bite of this bold and hearty sandwich will have you longing for the next release and bringing of the silver to net so you can savor the robust concert of flavors once again . Aside from the contaminants in the fish ,this is actually a very health meal . And with all the fish we get , we need to figure out what to do with them . Also I've seen some of you guys . Some of your guts stick out farther than your Johnson .

Anybody know who that dog is ? Here are a few pics from past trips . Dude , you ain't got a clue . Pre goby we use to go to fair haven and drift the lake . One morning by noon we boasted over 200 bass . And we had many trips like that for many years . There were 5 of us on the boat and my father had a scorecard . I think I landed 53 . And most were keepers . Up to 18" I know some of those ADK lakes there like the back of my hand. I know right where to go and where to cast . I have a " milk run " . I might catch 7 to 10 fish off one spot but in Saranac , a lot are small . Do that a few times in a mornings fishing and that's 20 bass. Just because you can't catch them ,don't think others can't .
-
Really ? You caught me , you caught the HB . Sounds like you are calling me a liar . I don't think 40 bass in say 16 hrs fishing is " unbelievable " to someone who goes a lot and knows his way around a fishing rod . And a lot of them were not that big . If you think the fishing in the ADKs is not as,good as it use to be Maybe you need to brush up on your FUNDAMENTALS .I can't imagine how good it was back then . Wish I was there . I am going to my Happy spot up there this weekend and hear a lot from other campers there are no fish in the lake . I have landed many big pike up to 20# and lots of bass up to 6# . I don't post a lot of pics because I don't take a lot of pics of fish, . I figure most on here have seen a bass or pike before . Unless it's a memorable fish .

Back at it this morning first light Ran out to 330 headed north . Did not take long till mature hits Got rods back out ,again another . Crazy current pushes us off our spot fast. Was hard to get speed right and keep it consistent . 2 more hit and weather rolls in and we high tail it which kind of sucks . Painted hot spot I call Mr Jeremy Fisher and my Gary D rig took all shots 35 ft down .

Go on coastal watch and get the satellite surface temp map if that's what you are looking for I did this morning before I went out because I heard lake flipped and made my decision to go off shore .

Help with my spread
HB2 replied to SmellsLikeFishNH's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I totally agree with this I would run 4 flashers with meat or fly at first . One on each rigger one high one lower like 20 ft apart and one on each dipsey to start . If kings are around and hitting flashers That will be plenty . Find fish and stay on them
